Ohh yeah!

Sun 2 Aug – Mayhem Festival

Awesome set line up, especially for the price. It blows my mind to think that people will pay like $150 for a Dave Matthews concert ticket, but then you can get all this awesome for $30, yay for mainstream media!

Anyway, when I first got there Whitechapel was playing. This is the 2nd time I have seen them, I don't care much for their new album, but they weren't terrible. After that some other band opened on the jager stage that I didn't watch. Then back to the Rockstar stage and The Black Dahlia Murder played. They were awesome. 2nd time I have seen them, and representing detroit well. They played a new song from their album that is coming out this september and it sounded very good. Then back to jager stage for God Forbid, I didn't watch much of their set so I didn't have much to say. Back to the rockstar stage for Job for a cowboy. They weren't bad, but were definitely better last time I saw them at DTE. Then back to the jaeger stage for All that remains, they were alright, playing a lot of their new album which I don't like very much at all, plus every time I see these guys the lead singer just sits up there and talks, and talks. I lost my respect for them last time I saw them and he punched a fan in the face that grabbed his hat and was running his mouth at that show too. I think he has a chip on his shoulder and thinks he is a badass because they have a song on guitar hero, in reality I just think he has small mans syndrome. After them it was back to the rockstar stage for behemoth. This was the first time I have seen behemoth, they were awesome. I'm not a big fan of the makeup and scene bands, I just want bands that tear it up, but these guys actually weren't just selling an image they tore it up. I will definitely be watching them next time they are in the area. Back to jaeger stage for Trivium. I don't listen to much trivium, the last show I saw them at they were pretty boring, this show as well for me. Then back to the main stage for cannibal corpse. I don't even know how these guys could be the main act. They sucked ass. The guy has absolutely no dynamics in his voice, same monotone garbage, every song pretty much sound the same to me, just everyone soloing at once. They seem to be selling more of a scene, they are so just hardcore and you better believe it because they will print it on their t-shirts and write about it in their interviews. I have listened to a lot of metal for a long time and in no way these guys do it for me. I like necrophagist, and I like decapitated, but cannibal corpse is just terrible. On a side note, there were dirt bikers hitting jumps while the bands were playing busting out some ridiculous tricks like back flips and getting some huge air. First time I have ever been to a show where something like this was going on.

Then over to the main stage. Mushroomhead opened. I wasn't that impressed, the vocals definitely weren't very good, and they were running around in their boxers, trench coats, and mask. Another nu-metal era band still floating around, not really impressed. After them was killswitch engage, and once again they tore it up. I don't really like their new album much, but Adam D was quite hilarious and that guy can wail on a guitar. The killswitch engage vocals were the best of the night too, he sounds exactly how he sounds on the album, so props to him for no autotune or studio tune ups, and for actually have some skill. Ahh, slayer, the gods of metal. What can I say about slayer? You know they tore it up. I'm not a huge slayer fan, but for some reason this was the 7th time I have ever seen them. My hat off to them, jamming together for over 20 years with almost the same line up and playing to crowds of thousands of people, I hope those guys play until they are a hundred years old. SLAYER! The last to play was Marilyn Manson, I have seen manson a couple times before and he was awesome, but this time I was quite disappointed. He sounded hoarse, and didn't really seem into it. Normally he has awesome theatrics but this time they were quite lacking. I don't know if he has just been rocking too long and is going the way of ozzy or he was just having a bad night, either way I was looking forward to him, and he let me down.
