1. [artist[Porcupine Tree
I was looking at
Oceansize and
Aerogramme on last.fm, two bands I'd both heard great things about and not been able to find records for. Putting those two in to the radio at some point ended up with Porcupine Tree. I think it played me '
Signify' but I may be mistaken. but I researched what albums I ought to listen to most and ended up grabbing
In Absentia from OiNK's Pink Palace. I remember being slightly scared by the cover. It sat on my hard-drive for a while, and when I eventually listened to it I was blown away. Love followed and the other two bands were forgotten about... for now ;)

WeezerSlow burn this,
Blue was one of the first albums I bought and
Say It Ain't So was the one I'd heard first before that - from BBC Radio 6music or a localish station called The Storm. I remember liking what I heard of Make Believe, which came out not long after I got it. But my real obsession with them only started when Red came out a few months ago. Strange, hm?
3)
RadioheadGAWD... most people say Creep, right? And that's not far off... My first song was
The Bends afaik... or it could have been 2+2=5 or Go to Sleep. Either the radio or my mother's CD collection is to blame.
4)
Nine Inch NailsEasier, the first song I heard was
Starsuckers, Inc. as I heard it on the radio when I was younger (we're talking about 12) and tried downloading it from somewhere. Unfortunately I only found the real song
Starfuckers, Inc. - and this being when I still went to church, it put me off them a bit. Later on came the Hand that Feeds, when I'd had a few years to get over it, but my real obsession came after watching SE7EN for the first time in a dark room and that fantastic remix of Closer over the titles.
5)
The NationalFrom the website of Emerald Wizard Radio, which I found looking for Libertines lyrics. This was the site of a German/Egyptian who obviously had access to all the best promos and put together amazing playlists on a weekly basis. No longer around. My interest was confirmed when I read an excellent writeup in MOJO magazine. They've been pretty consistently enjoyable since then (late 2004) and along with Radiohead and HOTS they're the only ones who can say that.
6)
Sneaker PimpsI think I must have heard
6 Underground on the radio when I was really young because when I listened to it later I found I could still remember most of the words. But I only really started listening to them after my first and only drugs experience - their album
Splinter is the sound of a come-down, up to about track 10 when you can look back on what happened...
7)
PJ HarveyA long term awareness bloomed into
love actually listening to her when I bought
White Chalk after seeing some of her live performances for it on TV, notably
The Devil. Having said that I had heard
Death Is Not the End a couple of years ago but I don't think it counts as I thought it was Kylie Minogue... oops
8)
The Cooper Temple ClauseRelentlessly egged on by the
forwardirektion: forum I picked up the leak of
Make This Your Own & heard
Homo Sapiens first because it was in the wrong order. I really wish I'd heard
Blind Pilots a few years earlier though.
9)
65daysofstaticSimilar to the above, but it was
Retreat! Retreat! that I heard first. Incredible live band.
10)
Joanna NewsomShe popped up on so many best-albums-ever lists at
forwardirektion: that it was inevitable that I'd listen eventually, but the first song I heard was
This Side of the Blue on the Orange 'New York Blackout' ad.
11)
Eliott SmithI have almost no idea how why or when I started listening to him. Probably due to hype or possibly a recommendation here. The first song was
Angeles12)
Bat for LashesPicked up the album after lots of good reviews and fairly conventionally listened to
Horse and I first :)
13)
WilcoThe first song I heard was
Jesus, Etc.. Bookends nicely, this one, as it was a recommendation from the lead singer of the next one.
14)
Hope of the StatesFormer favourite band after hearing
The Red, The White, The Black, The Blue all over the airwaves.
15)
MansunAnother bookend, because it was another direct recommendation from Mr Herlihy, though like (6) I could remember the words to
Wide Open Space.
16)
The Boxer RebellionI got into them through Last.fm's similar artists for (8) recently and hot damn, I picked
Watermelon to start with, which is incredible.
17)
The FlashbulbI got his latest album through the Vanity House feature on what.cd after he put it up. Lots of small tracks - I've only listened to it twice. 1st would be
Prelude18)
British Sea PowerSlow burner, got into them after spying them in some Rough Trade liner notes. The first song was the epic EP version of
Remember Me.
19)
Sigur RósOne of those bands for whom "success" follows ad placement; like Coldplay's Clocks in 2002,
Hoppípolla was all over BBC and C4 placements in 2005.
20)
YouthmoviesToured frequently with (14) and (9) and a cutely good band that instil joy into the hearts of their listeners especially with songs like
Ores or
The Naughtiest Girl Is A Monitor.
(Album evaluation still on-going.)
