yes. i was reminded of that line in which she talks about a "paradox of famous anonimity" after reading the article you shared the other day. i posted that song several times on the board but apparently it didn't reach the targets i had in mind, haha

haha, i'm not sure if that was as vague as i originally intended but w/e.

do you mind if i give you a deliberately vague response? >:] there are slight variations in each novel, but i'd say the intoxicating recipe consists of: 1. elusive secret / mystery + 2. traumatic incident + 3. disturbing revelation + 4. bittersweet closure / misleading sense of relief.

aw yeah, the part about him being a reader above anything else reminded me of that speech i shared in the first page of that thread (the one in which he wonders why we still "waste" our time with fictional stories and characters) when faced with the and being bossed around for the res of my life lol", but then admits that he just couldn't resist the urge to base his own life around the pleasure of reading. it's really inspiring to realize that he is also an incisive thinker; it seems like with every new book he decided to exacerbate all those features of his reading habits and of his craft as a writer, and i love the fact that the final product (and here i'm referring to his entire ouvre) ended up being equally elegant and subversive <3

btw, did you notice one narrative pattern both A Heart So White and All Souls had in common? it's something that "happens" towards the "end".

the use of the present as some sort of background for the truly pivotal events of the past is this guy's most unsettling trick, to be honest, you've worded up perfectly what i had been meaning to describe for a while... i guess you've already noticed that the two main "incidents" in Dance&Dream (pérez nuix's late night visit & that night at the club with tupra, manoia, and -lol- de la garza) are told as vague memories by a man who's struggling with both insomnia and fatigue, alone in his own apartment, trying to understand the things he's been told and the events he just witnessed, aware of the fact that those images will suffer some alterations as he tries to reconstruct them in his mind... and, as you said, we're obviously anxious to know and hear more of his own distracted thoughts. also: i would say that All Souls is the more consistently amusing novel, but there is one episode in the third volume of YFT which was pretty close to making me roll on the floor, lol.
