Svarte Greiner (NO - Miasmah / Type)
Svarte Greiner (half of Deaf Center) is the one man project of Erik K. Skodvin from Langesund, Norway. Svarte Greiner is a further exploration into a more dark, mysterious and disturbed universe, draped in a Lynchian mysticism and horror film cinematics. Since his debut album, Skodvin started to build up a distinctive live technique using an unusual collection of broken glove puppets and potion-filled medicine bottles. Skodvin is also the founder of the Miasmah record label and graphic design studio. Svarte Greiner has performed continually on festivals such as Club Transmediale, Unsound, Node, Interferenze, Alpha-Ville and toured with Fever Ray in 2009.

Blamstrain (FI - merck / Sending Orbs)
Blamstrain is a musician/producer currently hailing from Helsinki, Finland. Behind it is one Juho Hietala (born 1985), releasing on multiple labels such as Merck (US), Suburb (UK) and Sending Orbs (NL). The project was conceived in 2000 with the debut CD, “Ensi” released early 2003 after some MP3 releases on the internet. The follow-up album, “Disfold” was released in 2006 on Sending Orbs.

Yagya (IS - Force Inc. / Sending Orbs)
Icelandic producer Yagya (Aðalsteinn Guðmundsson) has been creating atmospheres through melody and sounds for more than a decade. A definitive member of the Thule Musik collective, Yagya also is known for his work as half of Sanasol and also the famed Plastic.

    Ruxpin (IS - Elektrolux / n5MD)
Icelandic electronic musician Ruxpin (Jonas Thor Gudmundsson) first started producing music at the age of 14. His first EP was released on Thule Record's more chillout imprint Uni:Form Recordings in 1999. Later that year Uni:Form released Gudmundsson's first full length “Radio”. The highly acclaimed Elektrolux imprint released his next two LPs, “Midnight Drive” and “Avalon”, alongside releases on their sublabel Mikrolux. In early 2009 Gudmundsson's sixth full length entitled “Where Do We Float From Here?” was released via n5MD's Enpeg Digital imprint. Jonas has done live shows around the world alongside artists such as MúM, Biogen, Alex Paterson, Bola, Jega and many others.

    Tonik (IS - Tonik)
Tonik is Anton Kaldal Ágústsson. Bluring the gap between sound and sight, color has a strong influence on the end result, exploring the various ends of the electronic spectrum while maintaining a strong signature sound: rich and stripped bare, minimalist and intricate, finely crafted and yet very instinctive.

    http://tonik.is/

    Skurken (IS - Möller Records)
Skurken makes glitchy electronica with less emphasis on the 'glitch' and more on good old melody. His influences include everything from corny 80's ballads to late 90's drill & bass and old computer game themes.

    http://soundcloud.com/skurken

    Steindór Kristinsson (IS - Shipwrec)
Steindór Kristinsson is best known for his work in Einoma. In 2011 he will release his first solo EP on Shipwrec. The EP will be followed by an album in December 2011. Steindór’s mysterious sounds and dark scapes will take you straight into unknown territories.

    ABOUT THE PROGRAM

This year's program will offer new and contradictory approaches which interact with familiar approaches that TODAYSART has cultivated over the past four years.

Whether external, internal, moral, physical, ideal, abstract, concrete, constructive or destructive, the red thread of conflict stitches TODAYSART 09 together this year as we put friction, opposition and ambivalence under the gun. From our serendipitous location in The Hague, international city of peace and justice, heart of international conflict management, we look at when, how and why conflict is woven through our lives in positive and less positive ways. We look at - in a world struggling to cope with tragic, violent clashes and destructive environmental disasters - the inevitability of conflict and wonder if there is an evitability.

Our program proudly presents works that challenge and provoke; works that present ideas and concepts that may not be easily understood or quickly digested. The best ideas are dangerous; they confront the established order and conflict with the status quo.

For the opening night, Hiroaki Umeda brings his 'Adapting for Distortion' project to The Hague, for what is certain to be an exceptional highlight. By using projections, Umeda becomes one with his environment, controlling sound and light with his movements. We are very proud to welcome visual artist Olaf Nicolai with his site-specific installation 'Samani', as well as Jonathan Schipper with his installation that captures a car crash in slow motion, all relating to this year's theme. Artificiel's new production 'POWEr' - An audiovisual performance based on acoustic phenomena and the striking imagery that offshoot from high-voltage emissions - will see it's European premiere at TA09. The Heart Chamber Orchestra, a project by TERMINALBEACH and 12 classical musicians, will present a very special audiovisual performance where the musical score is generated in real time by the heartbeats of the musicians. Daito Manabe will present his physical project 'Face Stimuli', where he converts music into electronic impulses to stimulate the facial muscles. The installation 'ALLWEKNOW' by Teletekst is dood will see its first daylight at TA09, providing the visitor with an innovative and radical new tool to experience the festival.

For the music line-up our curators have made a selection of fine concerts as well as radical experiences and club nights. One of the highlighted concerts is the Dutch premiere of Stonephace, featuring eclectic jazz radical Larry Stabbins on sax and flutes, Portishead's Adrian Utley on guitar, Helm DeVegas on keyboards and inscrutable aural sorcerer Krzysztof Oktalski with the down and dirty drums on vinyl and laptop. Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk, the producer of the first house-hit ever will present his classic cuts. Guilty Simpson's testosterone charged, inner city themes will be given a large space in this year's hip-hop program, next to the talented female producer Pursuit Grooves. The TOUCH label will showcase amazing atmospheric sounds from Hildur Gudnadottir, electronic legend Philip Jeck and Jana Winderen 's enchanting soundscapes.

    COLLABS & PARTNERSHIPS

Meanwhile, TODAYSART is extremely pleased to be collaborating with <TAG>, CTM, Dis_Patch, Musikprotokoll, STEIM, Extrema Music / Green, Holland Dance Festival, Teletekst is dood, Liefhertje en de Grote Witte Reus, State-X New Forms, Crème Organization / Bunker, Intergalactic FM, GODSPILL, VillaNuts, all the participating artists, venues and institutions in assembling this exciting edition.

Some of these partnerships are a result of our continuing participation in the ICAS (International Cities of Advanced Sound and related arts) network, with over 20 international kindred spirit festivals from Europe, North America and South America. This network, evolving from the European form ECAS, is a growing platform for numerous future opportunities and collaborations intended to fortify the bonds between presenters of digital art in the near future.

  • TodaysArt 09 / Conflict

    Lug 14 2009, 17:42

The fifth edition of the TODAYSART festival will invite you to explore your thought lines, emotions and senses. Expect a concentrated, physical experience.

We are all sense-full beings, and as such we are increasingly exposed to an immense amount of incentives on a daily basis. Can we still really feel? Do we remember what it means to be submerged in emotion, thoughts and overwhelming physical elements? Are we still able to evaluate impulses from the outside in order to act rationally?

The natural instinct to anticipate effects of external conflict and to enter into or to strive for adaptation, many years may have been stunned by a period of unbridled urge for growth and an emphasis on material existence.

The question whether we can identify, and then on the basis of a clear consideration if we can and want to intervene must be answered. Is society still open to incentives, both visually and in words and sounds and how does it manifest physically? Can we break numbness? What is our response to these incentives and we are still able to act instinctively? To what extent do we still dare to intervene on what we experienced, and to what extend are we capable to explain what is happening?

Conflict is therefore a red line through the program of TODAYSART 09, which through multidisciplinary creative processes explores this possible rebirth of consciousness. TA 09 creates awareness, shakes awake, opens eyes, generates feelings, will give answers and raises new questions, examines how conflict can lead to new insights and solutions, and explores the ability of the visitor to re-open to impulses from outside. Furthermore, the reaction and expectations of visitors will form a focal point during the festival.

Soon there will be more detailed information and program updates available for TODAYSART 09.

It turned out to be a great decision to organise this thing, as reactions we're overwhelming and positive! A new edition is planned for 2008 and posting will be done at http://BerlinRuftAn.com

    re<iew: TodaysArt at DEAF07

    >>> Looking into the very near future:
