1940 Lee Wiley - Rodgers and Hart Album

Three Wiley albums in 1940. This one has my favorite cover.

1961 John Coltrane - My Favorite Things

Listen to the music. Stay for the jokes.

    1965 The Shangri-Las - The Shangri-Las-65!

1967 Ewa Demarczyk - śpiewa piosenki Zygmunta Koniecznego

1975 Henry Cow - In Praise of Learning

1976 Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life

    1977 Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

    1979 The B-52's - The B-52's

Probably my favorite album. When Fred says 'there are dozens of others like you' I really believe him!

    1980 Blondie - Autoamerican

Plastic Letters, Parallel Lines, Eat to the Beat and Autoamerican could be placed under a hat and I'd be OK with claiming whichever one first came out as my favorite from the band.

    1981 Crass-Penis Envy

1982 Kate Bush - The Dreaming

A love-hate relationship. As with all things Kate love wins out.

1983 Gustav Holst - The Planets (Herbert von Karajan / Berliner Philharmoniker)

An excellent introduction to classical music.

1984 Jean Sibelius - Finlandia; Valse triste; Tapiola; Der Schwan von Tuonela (Herbert von Karajan / Berliner Philharmoniker)

Wonderful from beginning to end. I know it's wrong but every time I hear Tapiola I imagine a theramin over the top of it. Like I said, wrong!

1985 Kate Bush - Hounds of Love

My favorite album from my favorite artist makes 1985 an easy pick.

    1986 Sonny Sharrock - Guitar

We had a son. We called him Sonny. He played guitar.

    1988 Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man

1989 Giacinto Scelsi - Quattro pezzi per orchestra; Anahit; Uaxuctum (Orchestre et Chœur de la Radio-Télévision Polonaise de Cracovie/Jürg Wyttenbach)

    1990 Pixies - Bossanova

1993 Henry Cowell - Piano Music

1994 Stereolab - Mars Audiac Quintet

1995 The Chieftains - The Long Black Veil

Sting, Sinéad O'Connor, Mick Jagger, The Rolling Stones themselves et al are all Chieftains here... except Tom Jones who can't help but be Tom Jones.

1996 Sergei Prokofiev - Alexander Nevsky (St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra/Yuri Temirkanov)

A presentation of the Prokofiev film score for the Eisenstein film of the same name. The movie chronicles a Teutonic crusader invasion of Russia and the resulting uprising of the affected population behind a charismatic leader.

    1998 Philip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi

1999 Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun

2000 Sleater-Kinney - All Hands on the Bad One

2002 The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

Reminds me of the phrase "things could always be worse." I like confetti almost as much as Wayne does.

    2003 Souad Massi - Deb

    Masterfully produced album.

    2004 Henri Duparc - Chansons

Duparc knocks my socks off! Majestic and formless rather than serene as the cover suggests. I haven't heard anything like it.

    2005 Sleater-Kinney - The Woods

The loudest album I've heard that I am enthusiastic about.

    2006 Susan Christie - Paint a Lady

Recorded in 1970 and released 36 years later. Christie has a wonderful warm sad voice fitting acid folk to a tee and with competent enough instrumentation and a stunning introductory vocal freakout to Yesterday, Where's My Mind? 2006 is a throwback to a hipp(i)er time. Additional highlight is Ghost Riders in the Sky.

2007 Fred Frith and Evelyn Glennie - The Sugar Factory

2010 John Zorn - The Goddess: Music for the Ancient of Days

Can music be "beautiful?" Yes, she can.

2011 Hera - Where My Complete Beloved Is

Oh Companion That Abode Is Unmatched,
    Where My Complete Beloved Is.

In that Place There Is No Happiness or Unhappiness,
    No Truth or Untruth
    Neither Sin Nor Virtue.
There Is No Day or Night, No Moon or Sun,
    There Is Radiance Without Light.

2012 Hiromi Trio Project - Move

Her name is Hiromi. She's a black belt in piano.

    2013 Fire! Orchestra - Exit!
