Another stellar year in music (I must stop saying that every year) quite alot of dark sounds (Haxan Cloak - wow), a hell of alot of electronic but also a couple of releases on stoner rock/metal labels to keep things interesting.

  • 2010 as it happens...

    <Updated 03 Dec>

In my continuing spirit of stealin great ideas I figured I'd stash great albums of the year here, as they happen.
Consider it organic best-of list cultivation as opposed to the inhumane forced production of a list some time around late december when I should really be out buying my loved ones christmas presents.

So what has been knocking my upside the ear'oles so far?

    Triangulation / Interpretations
    Scuba

Oh my... Album of the year so far right here....

    The Wild Hunt
    The Tallest Man on Earth

Amazing how he can not feel the need to 'innovate' after his achingly foot-tapping first album, comes along with essentially the same winning style and a fantastic set of new songs and pulls it off again, making me think very hard about what will be my album of the year.....

    Crooks & Lovers
    Mount Kimbie

Loving it, really, so much good electronic sounds this year

    Swung from the Branches
    Foxes in Fiction

    Way dreamy, too nice.

    Cosmogramma
    Flying Lotus

And In The Endless Pause There Came The Sound Of Bees
    Jóhann Jóhannsson

    II MMX
    Clubroot

    Excellent second album on LoDubs

    Constellations
    Balmorhea

Now this was a pleasant surprise. After the last Balmorhea effort was a little too far into the domain of rockin and bigger on the peaks in more traditional post rock way, along they came and floor me with a subdued, intimate offering of mostly piano and strings. Look forward to hearing this one remixed too, like last year's.

    Infra
    Max Richter

    Luck in the Valley
    Jack Rose

His final, posthumous album... we had a lot to look forward to judging by this.

    Clinging to a Scheme
    The Radio Dept

Been waiting a long time, no surprises but does not disappoint.

    Emerald Fantasy Tracks
    Lone

    North
    Darkstar

Occasionally I find myself wishing they'd used an interesting synth sound instead of a general midi sounding electric piano, otherwise I great left turn for them.

    Causers Of This
    Toro y Moi

    At Echo Lake
    Woods

    Woody woodsists would wouldn't they?

    Worry
    Big Troubles

    How They Are
    Peter Broderick

    Energy Distortion
    F

    Gemini
    Wild Nothing

Fuzzy pop floats in on the June breeze

    Siskiyou
    Siskiyou

Just one of those great albums you discover that refreshingly for these times doesn't come iced in hype. Really good, raw but restrained earnestness, the addition of some horns brings an essential colour to the traditional line up.

    Mechanical Gardens
    Altar Eagle

    The North Bend
    Rafael Anton Irisarri

Seriously gorgeous melodic, cinematic, glacial drones

    Splazsh
    Actress

    Only Mountain
    Take

Becoming increasingly fussy about my wonk as the field gets flooded. This one definitely makes the cut.... and after a few more listens its getting even better. Heavier on the elctronic/IDM than some beat stuff sits it squarely in my taste sweetspot!

    Blood Embrace
    Calika

From the first second you are thrown into a lush soundscape that reminds me of Taylor Deupree's work which then begins to crank up the ensemble of machines and instruments clicking and whirring, plucking and sighing, seemingly to their own tune but all harnessed by Calika's ability to give it all an emotional depth and direction. The press release says this is him going back to basics but I actually find the mood here is richer and more realised than ever before. Good work ;)

    It Falls Apart
    The Sight Below

Expanding a little on the dub techno theme of the first album, The Sight Below maintain the glacial atmosphere while letting some light shine through the fog.

    The Effective Disconnect
    Brian McBride

More orchestral ambient pastures from one half of Stars of the Lid.

    Do While
    Do While

    Beatless shoegaze

    Hello Ambition!
    Coltrane Motion

    Fuzzy indie jams

Carve Out The Face Of My God.
    Infinite Body

Granular ambient textures in the vein of Tim Hecker/Belong though i have to say more on the Belong side of things which is fine by me as I love October language and am still awaiting a follow up.

    La siesta del cipre's
    Federico Durand

The sound of lens flare on old super 8 footage of summer holidays gone by.

    You Had Me At Goodbye
    Espen Eriksen Trio

    More excellent Scandinavian jazz.

    Simply unique.

    Pruitt Igoe
    Kangding Ray

Just as 'traditional' dubstep is coming off therails in a twenty different directions it might seem Raster Noton are a bit late to the game with this dark, foreboding bass ep, but when the genre sound is filtered through the meticulous hands of anyone on the RN rosta (such as Senking too), the results are going to be special, even if, as in this case not ground breaking.

    Rubber Sun Grenade EP
    Loops Haunt

Worth the price of admission for that first track. Wobbley bass done ass shakingly right.

Hotflush really on fire this year after those Scuba and Mount Kimbie LPs and this continues the run of quality (well fits in the middle as it was released before the MK). Thick 2step grooves coming on as if everyone in Burial's urban nightmare were, for a while, a little luvdup.

Another great year despite many claiming otherwise! Not sure what scale you can compare ALL the releases of when year to all of them from another year but below are 20 amazing albums and 6 amazing singles and they alone demand the attention of my ears every single day if their full quality is to be given any justice!

As usual, split into divisions with no heirarchy within (alpha order, unless I was too tired and got it wrong!). I may be adding a best tracks bit at some point too.

Thanks as usual to everyone for the recs and pointers and general enthusiasm for music that makes me feel happy to be part of this wonderful community of nerds.

    Top 5

    Unbalance
    2562
I have no idea what is going on with dubstep at the moment – for dubstep this would seem to be a good thing. The fact that it is becoming increasingly hard to pin down exactly what that word means is a testament to the sprawling landscape of musical exploration and cross-pollination that is steadily expanding from dubstep's roots. There is very little ‘dub’ to be heard on this album, but a whole lot of stepping coloured by waves of synthlines that bring his sound into the warm from the cold but equally appealing exterior of 'Aerial'.

    Merriweather Post Pavillion
    Animal Collective
I don’t think I need to say much about this release but it was the first AC album I ever got, and one of the few this year I didn’t buy as mp3 but as real life CD, based purely on the great reviews having heard none of it – something I very rarely do. It took a while for it to grow on me, being an AC newcomer, but after leaving it for a while I came back to it and the love just blossomed.

    Hospice
    The Antlers
More of a contrast in mood between two albums appearing together in a list I can’t imagine. Whereas the above oozed summer and joyous abandon virtually from start to finish, Hospice was like a leaden weight that, rather than attracting you to it literally pulled you in like a black hole due to its weight and density. Some people don’t see the point of listening to music that makes you miserable or cry, but for me the attraction is as strong as the need to jump up and down with joy. At times, the music is very grand, I usually like understatement, but the drama that plays out through this album is weighty enough to be able to balance this out making for an absorbing, life affirming 50 minutes.

    Steeltongued

    Hecq
I was new to Hecq last year with Night Falls and it made my Best of list. I was aware that album wasn’t necessarily his typical sound but was so impressed with it that it made getting the follow up a non contest. The last movement of the album takes us into the deepspace, rumbling orchestral tense-calm of last year’s record but to get there is like navigating your way through an interstella highway pile-up. Sounds bounce around your head (‘phones highly recommended for the best experience!) like shattering sheets of steel and then ricochet off into deepsapce before bouncing back into each other again to form the most impressive sound design, rhythm programming this side of Autechre.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart
Never going to win any awards for originality but for perfecting the art of a particular sound, these folks excel. Have tired of and avoided a lot of the lo/shit/no -fi blog hypes of the last year and was somewhat underwhelemd by this until I saw them live… and then I could hear the power behind the pop as the overdriven guitars came forward and have loved them from then on. Perfect pop songs for wannabee heartbroken teenagers everywhere.

    5-10

    Xerrox Vo.l II
    Alva Noto
Simply stunning - a perfect partner to the winter swept streets I was walking when I got it.

Texas Rose, the Thaw and the Beasts
    Castanets
Very happy to be enjoying a new Castanets album after the alarmingly dissapointing City of Refuge. This is gets it right marrying the new palette of sounds Ray has been experimenting with, with the sparse, lonely arrangements of his first 2 masterpieces.

    Post Nothing
    Japandroids
Indie rock - pure and simple, no frills, all the better for it.

    Arrivals
    Worriedaboutsatan
Should have made it on more lists. An engaging, reverb soaked soundtrack to an urban love story.

    Without Sinking
    Hildur Gudnadottir
My favourite string instrument used here to create interwoven, sprawling landscapes with a restrained virtuosity. Just let it take you away and deposit you, unharmed but emotionally travelled 10 tracks later.

    The Next 10

    Floating Action
    Floating Action
Apart from 'Marie Claire' which I have to skip immediately, this lazy hazy retro beach joint was one of my summer soundtracks.

    The Middle Way
    Keaver & Brause
Lots of wonky hip hop intrumentals happening this year. The Lone album came a bit too late for me to properly evaluate but I think this would still just beat it.

    Great Lengths
    Martyn
Easily one of the dubstep albums of the year. Supremely danceable to - if that was something I still did.

    Silence
    Monolake
A late entry but had to be on the list. Moody, metallic and yet strangely human.

    Psychic Chasms
    Neon Indian
Chillwave or whatever, this album was too dirty and acid-drenched to be able to fit happily against the inoffensive blandness of Memory Tapes et al, and all the better for it

    The Bells
    Nils Frahm
Stunning stunning improvised solo piano.. and... get this..... hugely accessible. From an upcoming star - look forward to more next year.

    Blank Grey Canvas Sky
    Peter Broderick & Machinefabriek
Dream collaboration comes off like a dream. Stunning stuff.

    Threadbare
    Port O'Brien
Worthy follow up by Californian/Alaskan fishing band. A bit more mood on this one which suits them as much as the joyous abandon of 'I woke up' - and the hooks are still growing on me with every listen.

    Immolate Yourself
    Telefon Tel Aviv
My first TTA album and not usually the sort of thing I'd normally get into but then I guess everyone should have some powerful, lyrical, dark electro-pop in their collection.

The United Colors of Trouble Books
    Trouble Books
Guessing this won't be on many lists but I really liked the quiet, goofy little world it created. Could have done without the drone experimentalism in the last half, but then the joy of digital means I can pretend it was never on there :)

I defy anyone to be able to directly compare, for the purposes of placing in a chart, the warm emotional wash they get from listening to an amazing piece of modern classical music to the prickly, teenage rush they get from blasting 3 minutes of pure unhooked indie rock, or to the angular urban shapes a low end slab of dubstep forces their body into and ever hope to make a definitive decision that one is 'better' than the other.

Such is usually the dilema with my year ender, and this year has been a particularly tough year as modern classical has well and truly taken its place in my heart. At the same time the electronic scene, primarily centred around all things dub has fractured and splintered into yet more sub genres and, well, gone all wonky.

At times I've found myself wanting to acquire a decent bit of indie rock to keep that flame alive for me and have more often than not found it challenging to find stuff that gets my eric tripping, though the stuff I have found (or been recommended) has been high grade.

So what you see below is more of a league system than a chart - an idea i've nicked from various last fm friends as a way of loosely grading releases without being too clinical about it. I initially did an A-D system and then a ***** - ** system but couldn't honestly bring myself to rate some of the amazing albums in the 16-25 section as a lowly D - it just sounded like an injustice.

So go ahead, try to tell me Deerhunter was better than Atlas Sound or that Fleet Foxes really should have been higher, but I'd rather you tell me about something thats not even here that you thought was amazing that I really should hear or ask me about, for instance, Ólöf Arnalds and then go and check out her beautiful album or anything else you don't recognise...enjoy.

(note: all categories in alphabetical order .. unless numbered stupid!)
[edit: have attempted to add loose genres/descriptions to many of the artists to guide those unfamiliar with certain artists]

    1-5

    Aerial
    2562
Dubstep blending with dub techno was a dream come true for me this year and this was an early strike.

    For Emma, Forever Ago
    Bon Iver
With the rush of discovering the latest best thing its easy to forget a quiet classic that came out all those months ago. It'd be a crime to overlook such a gorgeous album.

    24 Postcards in full Colour
    Max Richter
I'd been waiting a long time for more Max Richter material and while the format of the abbreviated sketches mapped out over these 24 pieces takes some getting used to, every single one could fill an album with their rich, emotional textures.

    Laulu Laakson Kukista
    Paavoharju
This would probably have been number one were we dishing out places. A hazy wash of rural Finnish folk filtered through an ever moving radio dial being operated by someone smoking more grass than would normally be encouraged.
