ABOUT LONERS (English):
1977, Siracusa, Sicily:
So much time spent listening to the music on the radio and from the records - you know the real ones; the vinyl inside the shiny wrapping cover - that somehow , against the odds, they were able to get; it was a labour of love, it was the beginning of a dream. With an old clarissa guitar and very little experience, Salvo Rizzuto and Sante Barbagallo started to explore the vast and mystical world of song writing. After several attempts they came up with some chords and a melody that was much sweeter to their ears than anything else they had tried up to that point, it was “I Remember A Dream”. The following year Salvo left Italy to go to London, where after the first few difficult years, he began his long held ambition, a singing career. He worked with many musicians including Trevor Horn, d-Influence, Stephen Duffy and since 1998 has published 5 albums (Freedom or Not / Sunshaker) and numerous singles. Sante stayed in Siracusa, where he remained involved in the local music scene, opened a record shop (Floppy Disk) and organized concerts and Blues festivals. 30 years later and a little more mature both musically and personally, Salvo and Sante have reconnected to complete the path started all those years ago. Carlo Barbagallo, a member of Suzanne’Silver and Albanopower, as well as a d-i-y solo artist, is in charge of the production. He has been able to input a great deal of his creativity, transforming each song from its acoustic origin into a fully finished product and so becoming the third author. Finally after two long years the album is ready. “I Remember A Dream” is the title track and although written 33 years ago, it fully represents the link between past and present and more romantically the fulfillment of a dream. The project is called Loners, the name inspired by the Neil Young song “The Loner”.
ABOUT I REMEMBER A DREAM (English):
The album opens with a slide guitar in the best blues tradition. The vocals confirm the bluesy intent, and drums and backing create a hint of soul. No gimmicks, no tricks, these are songs straight from the heart. The whole album relies on the abilities and musical instinct of real musicians. Loners will take you through a journey of soul & pop; an encounter between people and musicians. The drums are always tight the structures clean, the backing track simple and to the point, avoiding unnecessary flamboyance. It all sychronizes to achieve a balance between the melodies and narrative. A sense of magic emphasized by the use of reverbs and esoteric sounds. The significance is more evident at the very end, where it evolves into a realization that a dream has just come true. (Mauro Felice)
ABOUT LONERS (Italian):
1977, Siracusa, Sicilia.
Tanto tempo passato ad ascoltare musica alla radio, dischi (quelli veri in plastica vinilica spessa racchiusa in un ingombrante cartone a due ante) che in qualche modo riuscivano ad arrivare e farsi amare, the last trip to tulsa e sometimes i feel so uninspired su on the road, woodstock e the song remains the same al cinema: è l’inizio di un sogno.
Con una chitarra acustica Clarissa trovata per sbaglio e senza alcuna esperienza Sante Barbagallo e Salvo Rizzuto iniziano a scrivere canzoni; dopo diversi tentativi spuntano fuori degli accordi ed una melodia che forse sembra più accettabile di tutte le altre, era “I Remember A Dream”.
Salvo l’anno dopo (1978) partirà per Londra dove, dopo i primi anni difficili, darà ampio sfogo alla sua vena artistica maturando un apprezzata carriera come cantante, collaborando con artisti di fama internazionale (Trevor Horn, D-Influence, ) e incidendo dischi (Freedom Or Not / Sunshaker) con etichette discografiche inglesi (Cosmic) e italiane (Irma), oltre a fondare la propria (Boom Devil) insieme all’amico e collega Mark Hawkes.
Sante, rimasto a Siracusa, continuerà negli anni ad essere sempre attivo nella scena musicale cittadina: apre un negozio di dischi (Floppy Disk), suona e canta in diverse band, organizza concerti e rassegne di blues.
A distanza di più trent’anni i due si ritroveranno e, avendo entrambi raggiunto una certa maturità sia umana che artistica, decidono di dare seguito a quel percorso rimasto incompleto tracciato durante l’adolescenza cominciando a comporre un serie di nuove canzoni.
Le tante canzoni, ancora in forma grezza (chitarra – voce), vengono affidate per la produzione artistica a Carlo Barbagallo, membro di Suzanne’Silver (Radio Is Down – USA) e Albanopower (42 Records - IT) nonché prolifico e apprezzato solista DIY (barbagallo.weebly.com), che tra l’altro suonerà nel disco le chitarre e gli strumenti a tastiera oltre a curare tutti gli arrangiamenti. Carlo riesce a trasferire alle canzoni gran parte della sua creatività trasformandole in prodotti finiti e musicalmente maturi, tanto da potersi considerare il terzo autore dei brani.
Finalmente dopo più di due anni di altalenante ma intenso lavoro viene completato “I remember a dream” la cui title-track, oltre ad essere volutamente compresa tra le canzoni dell’album, nonostante composta 33 anni fa, rappresenta idealmente la continuità con un passato ritenuto importante e formativo dagli autori e, in un senso più romantico, il sogno che si realizza.
Il progetto dei tre artisti prende il nome di LONERS, direttamente ispirato al brano di Neil Young, The Loner.
L’album è stato registrato presso il Vertigo Recordings Studio di Toti Valente (Albanopower) che, oltre ad aver registrato e missato il disco insieme a Carlo, ha anche suonato tutte le batterie. Le parti di basso sono state suonate da Giuseppe Sindona (Albanopower / Cesare Basile / Mario Venuti). Hanno collaborato inoltre Giovanni Fiderio (Mashrooms / Tapso II), Francesco Bellia (Todomodo / Arsonica), Dario Serra (Suzanne’Silver), Maria Francesca Rizza, Ivan Cammarata (Roy Paci / Kebana / Naked Musicians), Salvo Tempio (Orchestra Jazz del Mediterraneo / Roy Paci).
Il mastering è stato effettuato all’Alpha Dept., Bologna, da Andrea Suriani (My Awesome Mixtape).

"I Remember A Dream" si apre con una chitarrina slide che ricorda i migliori blues del Mississipi, la voce conferma l'intenzione, batteria e contorni si spostano verso un soul leggero. Ed il gioco è fatto: nessun trucco da svelare, nessun mistero, sono canzoni fatte soprattutto con il cuore. Non resta altro da fare che lasciarsi accompagnare nel viaggio che i Loners intraprendono tra soul, pop, e canzoni d'autore; una storia di incontri fra persone e fra musicisti. Le batterie sono sempre impeccabili, le strutture sono pulite, la ricerca sonora (violini, fiati, percussioni, tastiere, pianoforti) è precisa e rigorosa e non va mai a cercare il virtuosismo inutile. Il tutto si muove alla ricerca di un equilibrio possibile fra struttura melodica e narrativa. Tenuto bene assieme da una intenzione magica ed eterea e che viene accentuata dall' uso dei riverberi e di alcuni suoni che vengono da lontano; intenzione che, in chiusura di disco, si toglie da ogni imbarazzo e che rincorrendosi si annulla per formare il sottofondo ad un sogno che forse si è appena avverato.
