60s Girl Group pop is one of my favourite musical things. Here are five songs I like in no particular order. *One of them isn’t a group I know.
I think this may have been released in 1970, but I can’t discount it on that technicality. The Supremes were of the girl groups of the 60s. It’s an anti-war song, but it manages not to come off as too self-righteous, because in the end it’s just about love. I love the fuzzy guitar line, it really adds something to the classic Motown formula.
Syreeta Wright - I Can't Give Back the Love I Feel for You
I like how the verses start with sparse piano chords, then those chords become more rhythmic and the guitar and bass comes in and the momentum builds up until the chorus hits. The chorus is huge, the kind that gets marred by excessive vocal gymnastics these days, but played straight, it is wonderful.
The Flirtations - Nothing But A Heartache
This is very simple but effective. There’s a brilliant, strident chorus that you just want to hear more and more of. Then the chorus drops out for a break which slows down the pace and isn‘t quite as catchy, and you think “Where‘d the chorus go? I want to hear the chorus!” and then it suddenly crashes back in even stronger and you think “Woooo! HELL YEAH!”
The Ronettes - Keep On Dancing
I like how it sounds like 12 pianos are playing all at once. I suppose I could say that about most Phil Spector productions but this wins over other Ronettes songs because of the coda. Better keep on dancing‘ little girl. I love a good coda.
I like how The Toys stole bits of classical music with gleeful abandon This is less of a song, more of a war cry! Attack! Attack! All is fair in love and war. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t advocate actual violence, but I could be wrong about that. Just don’t try and steal a Toy-man. I like the production of their tracks it’s nice and uncluttered and kind of funky.
