i'm a sucker for a discount bin, and the last time i was at fnac they had a bunch of stuff marked down incredibly low(everything listed below was under 3 bucks u.s. each). i mainly picked up 80s stuff or things i was curious about.
breaking glass - hazel o'connor
i watched the film breaking glass countless times in the 80s. so i was very happy to finally have the soundtrack. i love most of the songs just as much as i did way back when they were new to me. among toyah, nina hagen, and lene lovich she seems to be one of the most overlooked. i'm not really familiar with what hazel has done outside ]breaking glass, but i'm definately curious.
"express" - love and rockets
slowly i'm managing to pick up the early love and rockets albums. it's been so long since i've heard some of these songs that it's like hearing them for the first time. funny to think i saw soundgarden open for these guys way back when. at that show everyone was whispering "if peter shows up it'll be bauhaus reformed!" of course that wasn't to happen for over a decade later by which time i was no longer in the u.s. so unable to witness it.
the best of anne clark
wordprocessing - anne clark
two by an old favourite. spoken word with music by the likes of david harrow and vini reilly. the best of is basically a compilation of her early eps and mini albums. wordprocessing is a remix project. i often have mixed feelings about remix projects but i found this one quite interesting. it's always nice to revisit anne.
frontier psychiatrist - the avalanches
a cd single. i somehow missed these guys when they first came out. i remember when i first heard them how they seemed to be working a similiar vein to the shibuya-kei bands. the sort of clubpop sound popularized by pizzicato five and the people they worked with.
vroommm funk cinematheque - various artists
library music. that is - music created to be used as background music in television shows. in this case italian cop shows from the 70s. as it says on the cd cover high performance 70s turbo sounds for sprint-exotic movie scenes. couldn't have said it better myself.
the ultimate jo stafford
i don't know what has taken me so long to discover jo stafford. what a voice! she of course does a lot of standards on this comp. at least one track on here is a duet with nat king cole. this was something i picked up on a whim, and boy am i glad i did.
king kong - max steiner
the soundtrack to the original king kong film. it appears that the original soundtrack may have gone missing as this has the dialogue from the film included in the sound. so it's sort of like listening to the movie. the disc also includes an extra 24 minutes of music previously unreleased. some of the music is quite exotica like. very nice.
