• A Few Last.FM Rants

    Ott 31 2009, 15:10

There are a few things that I've noticed that Last.FM members tend to dwell on. Here are my thoughts:

    1) 90% of the pictures on artists pages are photoshopped. You don't have to comment on every single one of those pictures. Everyone uses photoshop now, so get over it.

    2) Tags are not genres. I don't see why people can't grasp that. Tags are labels -- a tag is any way that a person wants to label their music. This is why we have tags like "seen live" and "crap".

I'll edit this journal when I think of more.
  • MediaMax Anti-Piracy Software

    Ott 16 2009, 23:58

I got Velvet Revolver's CD, Contraband, the other day, along with a few others. When I got home, I put the CD in my computer to listen to it. Being a last.FM user, I've picked up a habit of always listening to music in my computer.

What happened next I was completely unprepared for. An autorun window popped up, and it had an agreement with "MediaMax" that it wanted me to accept. When I hit cancel, my CD ejected. I also noticed that in the background the CD had started playing, but the song was garbled and choppy.

When I looked up MediaMax to figure out what was going on here, I discovered that the software on the CD causes you to not be able to run the CD as soon as the autoplay starts, because it INSTALLS SOFTWARE onto your computer to mess up the songs. Yes, it installs malicious coding onto your computer without your permission.

So now my computer is screwed up.

I just wanted to write this journal to try to get the word out to other Last.FM users who may buy this CD in the future.

If you want more info, do a google search for Media Max, or check out the Amazon.com reviews here.

Disclaimer: I do not condone software piracy in any form. I do not participate in the act of music piracy myself. I only wanted to be able to listen to my CD on my computer.
  • Magazine Subscription Suggestions

    Ott 11 2009, 22:01

I find myself wanting to subscribe to a music magazine, but I'm not sure which one to pick. There are so many out there, but I'm not sure which one will best fit my interests (which are very broad).
I have considered Rolling Stone, but they seem to be too opinionated, and don't seem to focus on music enough. They seem to be way too focused on making fun of Amy Winehouse every chance they get (which is understandable, but does get old at a certain point).
I've also considered Metal Hammer, but they seem too narrowly focused. I don't necessarily want a subscription that focuses on only one genre.
I would prefer a magazine that comes with free CDs, though. That's always a plus. :)

Right now, though, I'm thinking I like the looks of Spin Magazine... (Though they look maybe a little too pop oriented).

    So, any suggestions?

Edit: WAIT -- I think I found my magazine. It's called Outburn.

As a guide, here are some genres I listen to:
