Nobuko Miyazaki (Nobu)

Flutist/Shinobue player

Nobu's world is always expanding. Her passion "to enjoy music with every person in the world", combined with a strong foundation and flexibility, enables her to converse musically with great artists from Asia to Europe to the Middle East.
Based in New York City since 2007, Nobu is an active flute and shinobue (Japanese bamboo flute) performer and teacher. She is a member of the Medina Tenour Trio (bossa nova /singer-songwriter), and various other projects performing her own and others’ works.
In the UK, she has performed with the Arabic ‘oud master Ahmed Mukhtar, as well as the UK’s premier Japanese drumming group Taiko Meantime. Her performances include concerts at the Brunei Gallery (SOAS, University of London), City of London Festival, London Marathon, and Star Pine’s Café, Tokyo. In 2007, she wrote and performed music for the Wayward Spaniel Theatre Production’s “Mr. Whippendale…” at Shunt, London Bridge and the English Theatre of Bruges in Belgium.
Nobu is also an active educator, teaching flute and piano throughout New York City. She also promotes traditional Asian music in schools, creative learning for kids, and has worked in diversity education.
Nobu studied flute performance with Thomas Robertello and Kate Lukas at Indiana University, Bloomington (USA) and ethnomusicology at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS, University of London, UK).
