Sat 24 Jan – New Year's Party
Despite calling themselves a “test band” the opening act were fantastic. They got us rocking with a variety of cover songs and were even brave enough to play ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’.
Jeff Scott Soto was in great form despite not being very well. He gave us a roaring rendition of ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ and a very emotional rendition of ‘Love Of My Life’ which he dedicated to Freddie.
The SAS Band themselves were superb, as usual. It was the first time I had seen their ‘rifts of rock and roll’ section and it was fantastic.
Spike gave out party poppers to celebrate the ‘New Year’ and there really was a party spirit in the air. We sang ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas’ with Roy Wood and the band dressed up for ‘School’s Out’. Spike made a very convincing traditional headmaster, whilst Jamie played the cheeky school-girl RMT style (causing some difficulty in guitar playing with his pigtails).
Toyah Wilcox gave a striking performance, dressed in black leather and with a feathery spike running vertically through her hair.
Then, just when we thought it would never come, Roger was invited on stage with his son accompanying him. I have to say that Rufus was fantastic. Despite the pressure, you could see that Roger was really proud of him. The highlight’s of Roger’s set (for me at least) were ‘Under Pressure’ and ‘Tenement Funster’. Of course it added to the enjoyment to see Roger obviously having a great time as well. The set was completed with the traditional performance of WWRY and WATC.
Despite some technical difficulties and timing issues it was a brilliant night. The venue was just the right size and I managed to get middle second row from the front. The audience really made it. But of course it was, quite rightly, the SAS Band who stole the show with their banter and party spirit. I definitely want to go again! Hope to see you next time!
