Well, here is my effort for June. The Soundtrack Of My Life (The Early Years)


1.Hello Goodbye - The Beatles. This was No.1 in the UK when I was born, December 1967.
2.White Horses – Jacky. The theme tune from an awfully dubbed European 60’s children’s programme but the song has haunted me all my life. Wonderfully twee.
3.Metal Guru – T Rex. The first song to catch my attention at four years old. I distinctly remember nagging my parents to get it for me & proceeded to destroy said single trying to play it on my Fisher Price Record Player.
4.Ring My Bell - Anita Ward. This song was responsible for unleashing the hidden talent that was disco dancing inside me, thanks to my older sister who forced me to be her practice partner. Quite unsettling for a nine year old.
5.Time - Pink Floyd. One of the advantages of having an older sister was the boyfriends. Handy as bully deterrents but they also introduced you to new music. I remember being 10 and my sister babysitting with her boyfriend and he brought some albums round, one being ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ which he proceeded to play with the lights down and smoke these funny looking cigarettes which smelled rather pleasant. Totally blew my little mind.
6.Golden Years – David Bowie. The man is a music god. You can literally cover the whole musical spectrum with him. Such a fantastic artist to set you on the road to discovering and appreciating new music. Thank you David.
7.Promises – Buzzcocks. The first single that I ever bought with my own hard-earned cash as a paperboy. A brilliant time for music, never to be bettered.
8.Rat Trap – The Boomtown Rats. The first album I ever purchased, another punk/new wave masterpiece of a single which I can still remember word-for-word.
9.Do Nothing – The Specials. I was a teenage Rude Boy! Tonic trousers, Fred Perry shirt, Penny Loafers & Burlington jacket. Thank god for Terry Hall & The Specials; I could easily have ended up as a racist skinhead but for their wonderful ska tunes and the political & poignant lyrics. It also got me into reggae in a big way too.
10.Torch – Soft Cell. This band fascinated me with their overtly ambiguous sexual overtones. Definitely one the oldies couldn’t stand so was instantly attractive to me.
11.Get The Balance Right – Depeche Mode. At the forefront of the electronic revolution that came after New Wave. This song just seemed so ahead of its time.
12.Play At Your Own Risk –Planet Patrol. At about the same time Electro Dance music came about. Heading off down to Covent Garden for a spot of break-dancing on a scrap of lino borrowed from mum’s kitchen, listening to music on a Sharp G7373 ghetto blaster. Wicked!
13.The Unforgettable Fire – U2. Guitars were back in fashion and the band to see was U2. This song was the start of their meteoric rise to superstardom. Still a great single.
14.Forbidden Colours – David Sylvian/ Ryuchi Sakamoto. A beautiful song. So beautiful in fact, that I chose to lose my virginity to it. This version is a later one and a bit longer than the original. Unlike my first time…
15.Rubber Ring – The Smiths. Probably the most influential of bands during the early/mid 80’s. Compulsory listening for every angst-ridden teenager at that time. Mr. Morrissey seemed to know all our deep, dark secrets.
16.Sign O’ The Times – Prince. Time to turn my back on all that bedsit land paranoia and depression and get funky. The little man was a genius, mixing rock, soul and sex in equal measures and a great live show.
17.Acid Tracks – Phuture. When I first heard this it blew me away. It came out of nowhere really, a dark, sinister pulsating rhythm that became like a drug to me. This was the start of my warehouse/rave party period. All other music was put to the side and I consumed copious amounts of the stuff. After about three years I suffered burn out and had to get out before my brain fried permanently. I think it took about a year before I could listen to any other music.
18.The Sun Rising –The Beloved. A great comedown track of that period. Lying somewhere on Clapham Common or Parliament Hill waiting for the sun to rise before heading off home to fight the demons of the comedown. Sweet as a nut.

So there it is. Hope I haven't bored you too much.

This guy turned down the offer to be in Led Zeppelin but recommended his good mate Roger Plant. Shame.

2.'Station To Station' David Bowie
Would've preferred to have used the live version from Stage, but mine's on yellow vinyl and I haven't got around to converting it yet.

3.'Sinnerman (Thomas Crown Affair) Nina Simone
Probably the greatest female musical artist ever. This song is like a religious experience for me, mystical & powerful. Praise the Lord!

4.'In/Flux' DJ Shadow
One of those songs that just knocks you sideways the first time you hear it. It just builds and builds. Indescribable really.

5.'Baby Night' Sweet Smoke
Ended with a toker's delight. Who doesn't like a bit of flute?

There was so many animal tracks to to choose from that I needed some kind of theme to filter through them all. Eventually, I came up with this...



According to Chinese legend, the twelve animals quarreled one day as to who was to head the cycle of years. The gods were asked to decide and they held a contest: whoever was to reach the opposite bank of the river would be first, and the rest of the animals would receive their years according to their finish.

All the twelve animals gathered at the river bank and jumped in. Unknown to the ox, the rat had jumped upon his back. As the ox was about to jump ashore, the rat jumped off the ox's back, and won the race. The pig, who was very lazy, ended up last. That is why the rat is the first year of the animal cycle, the ox second, and the pig last.

Hello Mixtapers,
My effort is yet another interpretation of the theme 'Listen Up'.
It could have gone a myriad ways but for me it conjured ideas of music that needed to be heard, that had a meaning or a message that demanded to be listened to.
This came mainly in the form of protest songs, songs of praise and social commentaries which I have tried to present in a loose chronological order, ranging from the 1920's up to the 1980's.
It covers many of the social upheavals of those times, Human Rights, War, Riots, Depression, etc. but mostly from a US/UK perspective (sorry Rest of the World).
I've had to spread this over two volumes, which is something I rarely like to do but i hope everyone enjoys this improptu musical history lesson...

Hello everybody, not a bad theme choice this month.
I've stuck to the original premise of this month's theme and compiled a 30 minute mix of songs that are no longer than 2 minutes.
I had 1,907 tracks to choose from so whittling down proved to be a challenge, which I overcame with some brandy and joints. It's fairly quirky, so could prove a bit hit & miss for some of you, but I did it in one six-hour 'session' and was a bit frazzled by the end of it, but all in all, i'm quite pleased with it. Apologies for my tardiness, it's been a busy month unsurprisingly, but I did manage to squeeze this one out eventually. Ooh, that sounds a bit like musical constipation. So without further a poo, I mean ado, here is Nerdy's mixtape...




For most of the year i've been converting old tapes and vinyl to mp3 which led me to like-minded geeks people, and on to discover the world of musical blogs.
This means I have neglected to hear the contemporary stuff, which everyone seems to have documented so well on here, that compiling a best of 2009 was pointless. As for the entire decade, well, you could drive yourself crazy doing that one.
