This isn't a "best of" list, per say, but I also think that some of these albums might end up on such a list.

Grindcore

Death metal isn’t sonically abusing enough. Or so says the attitude cast by grindcore. Grindcore features heavily distorted guitars and loud, caustic drumming. Vocals are in the low octave and more are incomprehensible than traditional death metal; think of the irate growl of a male grizzly bear disturbed during hibernation and you’re almost there. All in all it’s a blistering approach to music that generally sneers at melody and slow-paced tempos. Grindcore songs are often very short in length. There is also a tradition in which song names are incredibly long and contain complicated medical and technical terms.

Death/doom metal

Dark, morose music percolates through the backbone of this subgenre, hinting at beautiful despair. Death and doom are no odd marriage: the harsh, infectious spirit of death metal is slightly mellowed by the customary morose outlook of doom metal. The subgenre is marked by slow to mid-paced tempos and more lengthy songs. Traditional doom metal instruments such as piano and organ are often utilized. Baritone vocals often accompany the death growls.

Melodic death metal

This subgenre seeks to reconcile the sonic viciousness of death metal with the melodic edge of power metal. Sweeping melodic guitar riffs form the underlying workings of this machine. Quality production is a vital element of this subgenre, in contrast to many types of death metal which seek a raw, primitive sound. Songs are almost always fast and aggressive, but oftentimes bands will incorporate small melodic interludes or choruses that are sung.

Blackened death metal

Combining two of the heaviest and sonically abusing subgenres in music, blackened death metal takes the best elements of death metal and black metal and fuses them into a gratifying package. The degree of incorporation of either genre varies; for example, while most bands prefer death metal gargles, some do employ black metal shrieks as well. The tone of the guitars is often reflective of a primitive black metal sound. Blackened death metal bands often incorporate more melodic instrumentation into their arsenals, including piano/keyboards, violins, organ, and acoustic guitar.
