    Gen 13 2006, 3:37

18 months-2 years: music on 'sesame street', 'mister rodgers' and 'peewee herman'. i dont remember the exact songs i'd sing along to it.

2-3: Madonna, Debbie Gibson, other pop stuff that was constantly played on the radio around the house. my mom said that i'd sing 'like a virgin' but didnt know how to pronouce 'virgin' correctly so it sounded like 'urgent' or 'urchin'.

4-5: REGGAE: Bob Marley, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse (my dad's record collection); PUNK: The Clash, Sex Pistols, Black Flag, The Cramps (mom's collection). what i do remember is that my mom's music was scary sounding back then. they also played a lot of 80s stuff, mostly NEW WAVE; B-52s, New Order, Depeche Mode, The Cure, David Bowie (stuff that i still listen to today).

6-7: GRUNGE: my parents listened to KROQ so i heard a lot of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, etc. i knew all of their popular hits, but I didnt know who they were from. i didnt care, either. I could’ve cared less about grunge and alternative rock when I was freakin’ six years old. i was a fan of POP; "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston was my favorite song when i was six, and i discovered Mariah Carey when I saw her "Dreamlover" video in 1993. En Vogue's "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" was released and i'd sing it (innocently). my mother told me, "Don't sing about that!" Snoop Dogg's debut CD came out in 1993 too, and my dad bought it. I remember hearing that too--i knew the lyrics were dirty (but not exactly what they meant). Cobain died, my dad told me about it; he was all sad but i didn't feel anything. i just knew that he was the lead singer for Nirvana–and that Nirvana sang a song called "Rape Me" (and rape was a bad thing). I also knew that he had a very ugly wife. later, i first saw the video for Hole's "Doll Parts" and would sing the song constantly. it was catchy, and the lyrics were simple, dammit!

8-9: my dad brainwashed me into hating mariah carey, saying that she was a "bitch" but thats all i remember. i watched her videos and thought she was so prettyful, though (but still a "bitch"). i liked Ace of Base, Toni Braxton and Boys II Men. lol. i first heard No Doubt's "just a girl" and told my mom to buy me their CD ("tragic kingdom") for my ninth birthday. i also started liking Bjork. COUNTRY: i began listening to country music;LeAnn Rimes, Trisha Yearwood, Garth Brooks, Shania Twain and Alan Jackson. i dont listen to it now....or i hardly do.

10-11: I starting liking Hole again, after I saw the video for "Gold Dust Woman". However, my real loves were the Spice Girls, Hanson and Savage Garden. that phase ended when my best friend got me mariah's "butterfly" CD for my eleventh b-day and from that moment on, i was a fan. still am. became obsessed with madonna, something that still continues today. CLASSICAL: after seeing "amadeus" in my music class, i was fascinated by Mozart and classical music.

12-13: nirvana, nirvana, nirvana, hole, hole and more hole. um...yeah. my mom was disappointed that I went from Vivaldi & Mozart to Kurt & Courtney. i was angry and depressed; my parents were going through their divorce. the music helped me. i went through a GnR phase too--for about 12 hours. it ended when my mom called me a "stupid idiot" (LOL) .

14-17: POP TART: high school years. i wanted to be 'hip' and 'cool' so it was all about rap and hip-hop. but then, i began to like it. however, i grew fond of Fiona Apple, Garbage, Lunachicks, Babes In Toyland and Tori Amos (i enjoyed it in private, tho). one day, Mystikal's "shake ya ass" came on the radio and I started laughing hysterically. my mother said, "I don't want to hear about anyone shaking their ass!" and turned it off. for 3+ years, i mostly listened to pop, RAP, R&B and HIP-HOP; Nelly, Mystikal, Ludacris, Petey Pablo, Destiny's Child, Will Smith (uggh), Ja Rule, Eminem, 50 Cent and Alicia Keys. I proclaimed J.Lo as my favorite singer (ew). i also listened to Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. i LOVED britney and Justin Timberlake (I even bought all of her records and a Britney doll). TRANCE & TECHNO: i listened to that when i was 15, i even bought a trance CD.i liked it for about 2 weeks--then i went back to destiny's child. MUSICA LATINA: at 14, i also liked Shakira, Paulina Rubio, Alejandro Sanz and other latin artists (but not Ricky Martin). it helped me with my spanish.

18: became obsessed with depeche mode and other 80s music but nothing entirely new. basically all of that ^^^^^^^ has been mixed together and i don't have a 'favorite'.

my parents influenced a lot of my musical tastes, but now they suck. they listen to barry manilow and hall & oates. WTF HAPPENED?
