Musical Survey

1. What are you listening to right now?
Liz Phair, Sonic Youth, The Pixies, Mission of Burma, Halo Benders, The Mekons, Oldies.

2. What song makes you sad?
The best music-induced sadness for me has a lot to do with nostalgia for lost dreams and the world of my childhood. Stuff that brings me those feelings:
Carpenters: We've Only Just Begun, (They Long to be) Close to You
Janis Ian: At Seventeen
David Bowie: Five Years
Bjork: Sonnets/Unrealities IX
Sufjan Stevens: Concerning The UFO Sighting Near Highland, IL
Eternal Sunshine Soundtrack: almost all of the short Jon Brion pieces
Cyndi Lauper: Time After Time
The Hollies: He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother
Neil Young: Philadelphia
Lovin' Spoonful: Didn't Have to be So Nice
Outkast: Da Art Of Storytellin' (Part I)
Animal Collective: Winter's Love, Visiting Friends, It's You, Always You, Doggy
Radiohead: Kid A
Frank Zappa: Watermelon in Easter Hay
Vashti Bunyan: Just Another Diamond Day, the whole album
Panda Bear: Young Prayer, the whole album
Joanna Newsom: The Milk-Eyed Mender, the whole album
Love: Forever Changes, pretty much the whole album
Judee Sill: Jesus Was A Cross-Maker
Almost any good oldies

3. What is the most annoying song in the world?
Absolutely any mainstream country, i.e. stuff you would hear on a country radio station. There is good country music, mind you, but the popular stuff just drives me up the wall. Especially "Something to be proud of"

4. Your all time favorite band?
Animal Collective.

5. Your newly discovered band is?
Love. Forever Changes is one of the most consistently high quality albums I've ever heard.

6. Best female voice?
My favorite female voice belongs to Vashti Bunyan. My favorite female vocalists are Vashti Bunyan, Bjork, Joanna Newsom, and Kim Deal.

7. Best male voice?
David Bowie. Close seconds are Lou Reed, Ira Kaplan, Calvin Johnson, Jamie Stewart, Devendra Banhart, Antony Hegarty, David Tibet, and Avey Tare and Panda Bear of Animal Collective. In classical music I find that Nicolai Gedda and Luigi Alva have lovely voices.

8. Music type you find yourself listening to most?
Either folk or Indie Rock/Pop.

9. What do you listen to, to hype you up?
Dance music, David Bowie, or the song What's Up by Four Non Blondes.

Animal Collective at First Avenue in Minneapolis, MN, USA.

The Pixies.

13. Most hated band?

The whole opera Einstein on the Beach by Philip Glass or Watermelon in Easter Hay by Frank Zappa.

15. Band that you think the world should love as much as you do?

Velvet Underground: White Light/White Heat
David Bowie: Ziggy Stardust
Yo La Tengo: And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out

19. Can you play a musical instrument?
I can play trombone fairly well. I've always wanted to learn the hammer dulcimer, and possibly the concertina.

20. Ever been in a mosh pit?
Not really, but at the end of the Animal Collective concert, when they played The Purple Bottle, it was probably borderline mosh, if not all the way there.

21. Are you in a band?
Nope.

23. Ever dated a musician?
Nope.

31. Last song that you heard on the radio/cd…etc…?
Sonnets/Unrealities XI by Bjork, on my computer.

I love opera and a lot of other classical stuff. Mostly I like Romantic Era on through the twentieth century, but I do thoroughly enjoy some earlier stuff (like J.S. Bach and Josquin Des Prez) as well.

33. What do you think of Country music?
Some alt country is really great! i.e. Neko Case or The Mekons. But mainstream country (like what's on the radio) makes me want to scream.

34. What do you think of Death metal?
I'm not averse to screaming or loudness in music, but I've never been able to tolerate anything that would be classified as metal; the closest thing to that that I enjoy would perhaps be Boris?

Nope.

37. Do you listen to music in foreign languages?
Yes. Most opera/classical vocal music that I like is in a non-english language, Bjork and Sigur Ros sing in Icelandic, and a whole host of groups I like sing in two or more languages (Stereo Total, Arcade Fire, Kraftwerk, Boredoms, Chanticleer)

n/a

42. Best local act you can think of?
Husker Du were from Minneapolis, but they aren't really current…

A few friends; my family is pretty musical but not professionally.

I'm not really feeling anything major right now, but the first song I can think of when I try to discern what I want to listen to right now is… Crazy in Love by Beyonce.

50. Song that describes your life?
I once arrived at the conclusion that Always You by Animal Collective is the perfect musical approximation of my sexuality, but I would have to say that Watermelon in Easter Hay is my favorite song of all time because it taps deep into something essential about my nature.

51. Do you know the names of all the band members that you listen to?
Nope.

52. Does a musician’s physical attractiveness play a role in the music that you listen to?

Avey Tare of Animal Collective.

53. Favourite movie sound track?
The Hours by Philip Glass.
