Thu 31 Mar – Clare Maguire

Being my 3rd time seeing Clare Maguire (1st HMV next big things & 2nd at the O2 for the Script), I was even more excited that this was her first time headlining the show.

Support act Alex Clare, were very good, soulful rock and seemed to please the small 200 or so crowd at London Kings College. The lead vocalist lacked a bit of confidence in the speaking to the audience and it was very hard to hear what he was saying in between songs. But definitely a band to keep an eye out for.

Then entered Miss Clare Maguire. Wearing a stunning black corset style dress (not the best with fashions styles). The theme for the stage design was roses. And a black and red colour scheme going throughout the costume, set and lighting.

Opening with Ain't Nobody (breakage), the slowed down remix of her debut single. Clare belts out her vocals, swaying seductively to the beat of the music. Breaking into a more upbeat mode with 'Shield & Sword', 'Break These Chains' & 'I surrender', she came into her element, owning the stage and bigging-up the crowd.

First time I've ever heard 'Sweet Lie' live and the word 'wow', comes to mind. Giving emotion and expressing the story of the song so well. Continuing with the 'depressive songs' as she put it, next was 'Bullet', one of the most heart-wrenching songs on the album, her vocals continued to impress all, with long applause and 'woohoos'.

Bringing the crowd energy back up with 'The Happiest Pretenders', she teased the audience by suggesting to "come down and get people moving", she came down low at the edge of the stage offering some of the audience the chance to sing along.

Then came the steal of the night for me, "Midnight Caller", I heard this once before on a youtube video. But hearing it live was completely something else. She stood poised at the microphone stand, the room fixated on her, her voice dominated the focus of us all. My favourite performance of the night. And I have come home and downloaded it off iTunes.

Ending the night with 'This is not the end', a beautiful ballad - with quite a handful of people singing along to it. But the crowd continued their cheers long after she left the stage and Clare returned to perform the encore. A cover of Troubled Mind, which got the whole room booming with cheers, just a guitar and one hell of a blues voice - she needs to get this song recorded and it will sell.

The finale number was the song which is her success, Last Dance. The whole room dancing and singing - it looked like everyone was ready for the night to carry on and not to end.

To summaries, one amazing show. Have a look out to see if she is performing near you soon. If you fancy a few hours of pure 100% class entertainment at a good price - check out Clare Maguire. You will not be disappointed!
