  • Ok, too much of the same. Something different anyone?

    Feb 6 2007, 3:25

I'm so close to playing out Waking Ashland, Snow Patrol and The Hush Sound -- at least for awhile.

I've been listening to way too much Sufjan Stevens, Rocky Votolato and Regina Spektor. I don't think I could ever really play them out (or at least if that threatens to happen, I put on Enjoy Your Rabbit), but I'd like a little variety.

Maybe it's a restlessness due to the fact that I've been relentlessly pursuing similar artists and such so that I won't get bored of any particular song/s since I'd have so many alternatives. I've been taking to some The Boy Least Likely To, We Are Scientists and Yeah Yeah Yeahs songs lately. I'm trying to avoid screamo and run-of-the-mill emo, and go with some fresh stuff. Some genre-atypical emo'ish lyrics would be fine. Even indie stuff that doesn't sound like it's from the 70's would be good. I'm mainly interested in poetic lyrics, vocalists with voices that aren't grating, and melodies that make you think "wow, nice!" and eventually let you settle into them like an aged sofa.

I'm like a writer stuck in a windowless room with only books he's read hundreds (literally) of times for inspiration. My muse is fickle.

    Help!
  • Music Videos + Last.fm hits the spot

    Dic 30 2006, 6:58

I've been spending a bit of time recently looking up music videos and performances of new artists I've found on YouTube. I mean, what better way is there to find out if you want to see an artist in concert than glimpsing one of their performances? Anyway, the process is pretty time-consuming. It can be tedious though, tabbing back and forth in Firefox between Last.fm to check out which artists/tracks you want to look up, and YouTube to actually search for and view the different videos to find a good one.

So, while talking with my friend Walter about somehow integrating Last.fm and music videos, he alerted me to a site called I Love Music Video (http://www.ilovemusicvideo.net/) which kind of does that. At least, given your username, it can read your profile, top track/artists, and top weekly tracks/artists. It also integrates Last.fm top tracks/artists for your convenience.

    (See larger image)

It's a fun little diversion, even though it doesn't do all that much. Regardless, the AJAX-quickness certainly makes the video lookup process very efficient. Check it out if you have a few minutes here and there.

Now, watch Hayley from Paramore do her thing :)

  • Lyrics Quiz 2 (done!)

    Dic 27 2006, 7:56

Ok, it's about time for another one. So many more good bands.. sigh.

Step 1: Put your playlist on random.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 30 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
Step 3: Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 4: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!

NOTE: There are repeating artists so some can be used more than once... a lot more than once ;) It's random.

  • Our Christmas Mix (post your favorite covers/remixes)

    Dic 25 2006, 20:12

Courtesy of most mainstream radio stations, the airwaves over the Christmas season are filled with bubbly, often terrible pop (and other genres', but frequently pop) renditions of Christmas songs. How about we do everyone a service this year and make our own Christmas mix of better sounding, non-mainstream Christmas covers and remixes?

Emo/indie covers are preferred, but covers from any genre are welcome. My favorite would have to be:

    1. O Come O Come Emmanuel
  • The Section Quartet is wow.

    Dic 23 2006, 20:49

I just stumbled across them while looking through asdaysfade_x's music, and they're just.. wow. I've always had a sore spot for strings, and mixed with some familiar melodies, The Section Quartet's music blows my mind.

So far I have their Dashboard Confessional, Fall Out Boy, John Mayer and Taking Back Sunday tribute albums, and they're all gold. Soon to be gotten are... Coheed & Cambria, Coldplay, Evanescence, Garbage, Good Charlotte, Linkin Park, Metallica, Panic! at the Disco, Simple Plan, and Yellowcard. Maybe I'll pick up the R.E.M. and Tool tributes too, if I can find them.

Yeah, that's right. You can sip wine to this and love yourself for it.
  • So many amazing bands, take 2.

    Dic 21 2006, 15:45

And here I am, a few weeks later with a subscription and a bevy of new artists that I'm flat out loving. I've been heading over to my neighbors and checking out any unheard of artists in their top 20, pretty much, and wow -- such great taste.

I'm usually one of those people that falls in love with a specific artist for some period of time and puts his favorite tracks of theirs on repeat. Soooo, finding say 20 new artists and being able to put their entire CD's on shuffle/repeat is completely new to me. But I'm loving it. I just can't believe there are so many bands that I'd never heard of before with such an instantly appealing sound.

Here are the latest artists I've been interested in (including the ones I mentioned in http://www.last.fm/user/keithchurch/journal/2006/12/6/284164/):

Valencia, Away From Here, Boys Like Girls, A Change of Pace, Eisley, All Time Low, The Honorary Title, Dear Whoever, Paramore, Explosions in the Sky, Lagwagon, Lorene Drive (thanks JoshuaJuratory!), Name Taken, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Sherwood, Park, Plain White T's, The Fall of Troy, The Audition, The Spill Canvas, Waking Ashland, and more of Relient K.

If you have any favorite tracks from these artists, post them. I'm currently shuffling through 1000 or so songs, so it'll take me awhile to find the more memorable ones :)

Also, if you have any suggestions for more artists, I'd love to hear them. I'm always on the lookout for more.
  • [Survey] So you SAY you listen to everything...

    Dic 20 2006, 1:53

    ... but do you really?

I like to think I listen to and have been exposed to a wide variety of musical genres, but hell, I'm up for a little validation. A thought: I have lots of songs that I don't listen to, but that I keep available in case I'm ever in the mood for them. I wonder if that'll affect the results.. eh well, game on.

    (idea *lifted* from WhiteJasmine @ http://www.last.fm/user/WhiteJasmine/journal/2006/11/10/264242/ :p)

Put an 'x' next to artists who you have songs by, even if it's only one.

Posted songs in 19 of 27 genres, so that's about a 70% variety. Not too shabby!

That huge-ass list has reminded me of more than a few songs I have to reacquaint myself with. Woot =D
  • So top 5 neighbors... what are you like?

    Dic 19 2006, 20:55

List your top 5 current neighbors on last.fm and go to each of their pages. Write down which artists are their top 3 and compare them to how high they rank on your own list.

    (stolen from alexxxxxxx :p)

    1) Minofeternity
first: Saves The Day (113th with 32 plays)
second: Jimmy Eat World (97th with 38 plays)
third: Thrice (289th with 8 plays)
rating: 166/500 you're my #1 neighbor? but.. so little.. in common... gah! awful!

    2) allejard
    first: blink-182 (43rd with 73 plays)
second: New Found Glory (47 with 68 plays)
third: Yellowcard (71st with 47 plays)
rating: 53/500 much better.. you have my permission to move up over Minofeternity.

    3) LoveSoon
first: Green Day (107th with 34 plays)
second: John Mayer (120th with 30 plays)
third: Weezer (69th with 48 plays)
rating: 98/500 such mainstream (but great) artists. i recall listening to them so much more. guess they got lost in the scrobbling shuffle..

note: yeahh, i'm skipping Carmella15M b/c her 3 top artists have been covered. except for death cab, and i don't listen to them much (/shame).

    4) kenquail
first: Switchfoot (381st with 4 plays)
second: Goo Goo Dolls (37th with 76 plays)
third: Dashboard Confessional (217th with 13 plays)
rating: 211/500 ok, i heart dc. but apparently they're much lower than they should be on my top artists list. so kenquail, i accept your neighbordom regardless of your abysmal rating :)

    5) imsockmonster
first: The Hush Sound (5th with 315 plays)
second: The All-American Rejects (63rd with 51 plays)
third: Hot Hot Heat (18th with 148 plays)
rating: 28/500 oh yeah, you definitely win. heart.

just like real neighbors, you get a variety of people you may or may not be compatible with. the kinds you invite over to watch a movie when you're bored, and the kinds you pretend you're not home for when they want to borrow a cup of sugar. and well... this is no different (not that i expected it to be). meh!
  • iTunes/Winamp Lyric Quiz (12 left!)

    Dic 13 2006, 23:23

Step 1: Put your playlist on random.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 30 songs that play, no matter how embarassing.
Step 3: Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 4: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!

NOTE: There are repeating artists so some can be used more than once... a lot more than once ;) It's random.

(Thanks to HardRocker488 for the idea!)

  • So many amazing bands out there.

    Dic 6 2006, 10:33

After having revisited Audioscrobbler/Last.fm recently, for the first time since around June, I've come across so many insanely good bands. For the last few months, my musical preference has been stagnating over bands like Da Vinci's Notebook and Tally Hall, and musicals such as Last 5 Years, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Wicked, and Urinetown... but goddamn, I feel like I've hit the mother load.

Previously, my musical tastes (in the indie/emo scene, anyway) aligned with bands like Taking Back Sunday, Straylight Run, Flogging Molly, The Rocket Summer, Yellowcard, Motion City Soundtrack, The Academy Is..., Mae, and Panic! at the Disco.

As soon as I heard a few songs by the next few bands I'm about to list though, I got hooked. If you have (or had) any interest at all in the bands above at some point, you owe it to yourself to give these bands a chance. They're amazing:

The Hush Sound, Bayside, The Receiving End Of Sirens, Forgive Durden, ELLEGARDEN, Sufjan Stevens, Rocky Votolato, Hit the Lights, Anberlin, RED JUMPSUIT APPARATUS, Silverstein, Jack's Mannequin, JamisonParker, and The Scene Aesthetic.
