• Shameless Plugging...

    Ago 29 2009, 14:54

I have split this journal entry into three sections. Firstly, there is a list of active bands and projects which are, funnily enough, active. This way, you know what to expect in the near future. After that, there is a list of recorded output (chronologically, most recent first) featuring myself. And finally, there is some plugging of nits and pieces which don't feature me at all. Everything I have endeavoured to provide a brief description of, so you can check out what interests you and ignore what wouldn't. Feedback is welcome, but it may better be directed at the artist page in question.

    Active Bands/Projects:

"Project 34", who are an experimental/avant-garde rock band based in Southampton, UK. We have not recorded yet because we have been a bit slow to get off of the ground, but I'm fairly confident that once we get going properly it will easily be the best I have yet put my name to.

FetalMolk, who are a Metal/Folk band based in Tring (Hertfordshire), UK. Not the tightest of units (but hey, we do folk, so nobody will notice ;p) but nice, fun and upbeat. Entered a Battle of the Bands competition in December, which we one best original track at, but again we have yet to record.

Conspiracy Theorists, who I'm not even sure are a genuine band. It's a two piece acoustic busking kinda think with Jash. We may use the material and embelish it for FetalMolk. Or we may record an acoustic album. or we may not. We'll have to wait and see.

    Recorded output:

Biz Baz Boz - Urgh? (2009)
    01 Intro (Part 1)
    02 Intro (Part 2)
    03 Phil's Testicular Enlargement
04 A Homage to Green Day (Take 1)
05 A Homage to Green Day (Take 2)
06 Swine Flu Scramble (Part 2)
    07 Mashed Potato Mashup
    08 Saan's Ice cream Truck
    09 Twangcore

Invited to join BBB as a guest guitarist (I know the bassist) for one album. The entire band is built around entirely improvised nonsense. Frequently, we don't even know what keys each other are playing in. It's not recommended for anybody unless you happen to be mentally ill or like the idea of a band using music as a platform for fun rather than audible coherency. So if you check it out, you have been warned. On the plus side, it's all available for free download. The official genre for this album is "twangcore", stemming from my use of the Jaw Harp on one track (NAME).

    Self Diagnosis - Remnants (2007)
    01 To the Archive!
    02 Quantum Democracy
    03 Go Underground
    04 Fingers on Frets
    05 Incognito
    06 The Rock
    07 In the Dark
    08 Lore Finding
    09 Fiasco
10 Hall of the Mountain King
    11 Studio Banter [bonus track]
    12 Kit [bonus track]
    13 [bonus track]

My first recorded output. Remnants was borne out of a failed Rock Opera, due to time constraints not allowing us to be able to produce what we want. The result is rock with a strong 70's influenced "classic rock" feel. You can also tell that my love of prog crept in, but this manifested itself mostly in diversity rather than progressive songs. Far from brilliant (not to mention the recording quality), but an unnoffensive listen. All tracks are available for free download except the Studio Banter, which is probably for the best. Hall of the Mountain King is a destruction of an Edvard Grieg composition.

    Other shameless plugging...

Shining Colours, who are a light rock band which feature my brother on keyboards. They were short lived and only recorded one track, Paranoia (2008), which is available for free download.

Tramp Etiquette, who are another light rock band local to my home town, and with whom I had associations with in their early years. Now, they are receiving some modest success and airplay. Definitely worth checking out.

Self Diagnosis - Endless Satire (2006), is an album of spoof material written by Dan. Due to copyright issues (as in, we used to original music) we cannot spread the files and are used solely for personal use. But I thought I'd mention it, just to wind up Dan.

  • Lyrics...

    Gen 12 2009, 1:08

I'm not normally a lyric type of person. I much prefer to listen to the music. However, there are occasions when I listen to words and think 'Wow', either because the lyrics mean something to me, are so true, or just purely inspired. These are a few of those moments. I've tried to avoid quoting whole songs, or stupid amounts from the same bands (Thinks Genesis, Leatherat or The Who...). It's also mostly for personal reference, so I'm not going to analyse them, and is subject to update at any time, but If you read this you're probably bored, so feel free to share some of yours...

    Asia, I Will remember You
    No matter how I try
    You're there before my eye
And the thought will never subside, forever
    I will remember you

    Asia, Parallel Worlds
    To think I can’t touch
    What I’m craving so much
    For I love her

The Beatles, With a Little Help From My Friends
What would you think if I sang out of tune
Would you stand up and walk out on me?
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song
And I'll try not to sing out of key

    Biffy Clyro, Machines
I've started falling apart, I'm not savouring life
I've forgotten how good it could be to feel alive

Billy Joel, Say Goodbye to Hollywood
Life is a series of hellos and goodbyes
I'm afraid it's time for goodbye again

    Let's not pretend
That you care (If you're not here now)

Diablo Swing Orchestra, Rag Doll Physics
But I do and I don't want to care any more
If I close my eyes will it spare me the sight?

I need to know, that if necessary you will die for me
Now tell me, will you die for me? Will you die for me?

    Dog Fashion Disco, Sweet Insanity
    Inspired by your madness
Like furious wind in a storm
    Slowly growing cold
I'm falling in love with you

    Duran Duran, Save a Prayer
Some people call it a one night stand, but we can call it paradise

Electric Light Orchestra, Ticket to the Moon
Got a ticket to the moon
I'll be rising high above the earth so soon
And the tears I cry might turn into the rain that gently falls upon your window
    You’ll never know

Faith No More, Edge of the World
You can trust me - I'm no criminal
But I'd kill my mother just to be with you

My life is falling to pieces
    Somebody put me together

    Genesis, Home by the Sea
Picking up the pieces, putting them away, but something doesn't feel quite right

    Genesis, That's Me
Every morning when the people are out
And I'm free to move around on my own
I look into the sun and I see a reflection
Of a sad and lonely shrivelled man
    That's me, that's me
And I know it's how I'm always going to be

    Genesis, Undertow
If this were the last day of your life, my friend tell me
What do you think you would do, then?

    George Michael, Careless Whisper
    I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
    Though it's easy to pretend
    I know you're not a fool
Should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that I've been given
So I'm never going to dance again
The way I danced with you

    Gogol Bordello, American Wedding
I understand the cultures of another kind
But here word "clelebration" just doesn't come to mind

    Gogol Bordello, Supertheory of Supereverything
First time that I read The Bible it had stroke me as unwitty
I think it may start a rumour that The Lord ain’t got no humour

    Loving you
    Makes nothing easy
    After all
The things we want are not the same

If it feels this good and no-one's hurt how can it be so wrong?

    Leatherat, I Like to Smoke
I like to smoke, I like to drink
I'm not bothered what you think about it
    Criminalise my life
    I'll do it anyway
I like to sing I like to shout
No need to be put out about it
    Worry about your own life
I'll live my life my way

    Leatherat, Yours
The world seems very cold today
When people ask I say I'm feeling fine
    Drinking alone again
But the bars and clubs have long called time
The people have gone and I'm left on my own with my thoughts
    Of you haunting me
    Acting out normality
    Condemmed to play this role
I felt the cold wind of change as I faced up to the sign
The cold wind of change knowing you're gone for good this time
For those that grieve and those that mourn you champion our cause
You took away a part of me, keep it 'cause it's yours.

  • Reasons why 1973 was the best year music has yet seen.

    Ott 10 2008, 20:59

I've created a list of inspired studio albums released in 1973 designed to confirm my belief that that year was, as the title of the journal suggests, the best year for music. If only I had been born then! I believe that pretty much every album mentioned speaks for itself, but a couple of notes have been added anyway.

If anybody has any that they feel could be added to this list, then do let me know. More evidence is always better :). Or if anyone disagrees, and can argue their case, I'd love to find a large quantity of music better than this!

In truth, mind, I think that the first four albums listed should be enough, but in case their not for you, I hope to bowl you over by quantiy of quality rather than the cream of quality. If that makes sense. It does in my head :S.

Anyway, without further ado, I give you epic awesomeness...

    01. Genesis - Selling England by the Pound

This album is the definition of epic awesomeness. I could sing the praises of it for ages, but due to a desire not to bore you I will force myself to be restrained, and will merely inform you that it is the top rated progressive rock album on, a must-use website for any progressive music fan :).

It is also worth noting, however, that Genesis released their first live album, Live, earlier in 1973. They also released the single from the album, I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) with the EPIC B-Side Twilight Alehouse. Why that was never released on an album I shall never know.

    02. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
    03. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
    04. The Who - Quadrophenia

I've been instructed by Dan to comment on the brilliance of this album, even though I would have said that that was self evident. So there you have it. It's brilliant.

    05. Wings - Band on the Run

For a list of largely prog-based albums, Band on the Run may, at first sight, appear to be a strange choice to be included in this list. However, it is easy to see why this album is considered Paul McCartney's finest post-beatle work. I would also argue that Linda McCartney's additions to the songwriting and Dennie Laine's guitar work take Wings onto a mucial level that the The Beatles never reached, and that Wings never achieved the same level of success that they undoubtedly deserve.

    06. Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans

Far from the best album in the list or that Yes have done, but included for three reasons. Firstly, it demonstrates that, although not a particularly special album, Yes did do an album in 1973. Secondly, it has The Ancient (Giants Under the Sun) on it. And finally, it gives me an excuse to mention their live album Yessongs, also released in 1973, and which is nothing short of breathtaking.

    07. Status Quo - Hello!

OK, so maybe Quo may not exactly write the finest music in the world, but Quo are the finest no-nonsense rock and roll act who essentially defined a feelgood sound that no band since has successfully replicated (I stand to be corrected), and Caroline must be considered a signature tune. The album also features Roll Over Lay Down and Blue Eyed Lady.

    08. Clearlight - Clearlight Symphony

    Wonderful - Trully wonderful music!

    09. Jethro Tull - A Passion Play

The following are a list of artists and albums which were also realeased in 1973. I have no particular reason to comment about them, and they aren't necessary to solidift my point. But still, all of them are fantastic, most of them prog, and I thought I'd mention them.

    10. Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
    11. Queen - Queen
    12. Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
    13. Deep Purple - Who Do We Think We Are?
    14. Campo di Marte - Campo Di Marte
    15. Hatfield and the North - Hatfield and the North
    16. Perigeo - Abbiamo Tutti Un Blues Da Piangere
    17. Rick Wakeman - The Six Wives Of Henry VIII
    18. Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds Of Fire
