My Best and Worst of 2009!!!

Dic 31 2009, 20:53

This took me forever to compile. It took lots of searching through my library, catching up on some late-in-the-year releases, and going back and reminding myself of some of my faves from early in the year…The only rules were that the ALBUM (the Drake mixtape would have charted on my top, but it topped the mixtapes instead) had to be released in 2009 (thus, why an album like Beyonce’s “I Am… Sasha Fierce”, which had tons of hot singles this year, is not included on this list).

Check out my picks below and PLEASE leave comments, questions, praise, hate, or suggestions for my lists…Thanks in advance!

My Top 20 Albums of the Year
20) Rihanna - Rated R
Never would have thought she would be on my list over Chris Breezy, but once I finally gave in and listened to it, she edged him out...
19) Melanie Fiona - The Bridge
Soulful melodies and great production make this the female throwback album of the year...
18) R. Kelly - Untitled
Still one of the reigning king of modern R&B
17) Kelly Clarkson - All I Ever Wanted
Glad she went back to more of a pop sound on this one
16) Robin Thicke - Sex Therapy: The Experience
Most improved artist of 2009..."Something Else" sucked...this album is hot!
15) Norah Jones - The Fall
Love every album she makes...
14) Mariah Carey - Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel
Back on track with this album after the mediocre "E=MC²"
13) Toddla T - Skanky Skanky
Like drinking an energy drink
12) Mary J. Blige - Stronger withEach Tear
Surprisingly Mary album of the decade
11) Mayer Hawthorne - A Strange Arrangement
Male throwback album of the year
10) Laura Izibor - Let the Truth Be Told
VH1 constantly playing an introduction to her this summer is the reason for me checking out this album...I'm glad I did
9) Tonéx - Unspoken
The most underrated artist of the decade…immensely talented and his albums consistently expand boundaries
8) Adam Lambert - For Your Entertainment
I had very high expectations for this album as a fan of his from when he was on American Idol and he matched them with this great debut
7) Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon: The End of Day
Easily the hip-hop album of the year.
6) Major Lazer - Guns Don't Kill People...Lazers Do
This ridiculously catchy album is bursting with energy and will have you on your feet dancing in no time!
5) Alicia Keys - The Element of Freedom
Every track is beautiful...Alicia is 4 for 4 in terms of her albums in my book!
4) Ryan Leslie - Ryan Leslie
The production on this album is brilliant…just like R-Les himself
3) The-Dream - Love vs. Money
Another masterpiece from The-Dream. He definitely took a few risks on this one - and they wound up paying off
2) Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
It's hard to peg this album as any one style, but it works! From beginning to end rhythms and chords change, guitar licks come out of the blue, and background voices sing weird harmonies, but it is so amazing the way all of it comes together in this epic album!
1) Maxwell - BLACKsummers'night
This album was well worth the eight-year wait. One of the best albums of not only the past year, but also...the whole decade. A MUST-LISTEN for everyone. An INSTANT CLASSIC!

k-os - Yes!

Well, all supports almost all lists. But i'm disagree with ur opinion about Keys' last album. Her worst album ever, only 3 or 4 good tracks. Many of 2009 released albums I didnt listen yet (4 example "Rated R"), but soon, very soon... "Graffiti" is good album. "BISD" is bull*hit. Wait JT, Usher & comebacks of L. Hill and Mystical. Prison is over)

I actually found Rated R and Graffitti WAY more disappointing than Fantasy Ride, which I believe got way more listenable tracks than the two mentioned before, but that's just my 2cents

I do enjoy the album list but i think some are ranked way to high like Alicia Keys and some are ranked to low like Melanie Fiona's The Bridge. I think the Bridge will be a mainstay in 2010. Your honorable mentions should've been on the list!! lol. I need to give LMFAO's album a listen-it seems like a really fun record. Oh and I am completely shocked that Lady Gaga's Party Monster is not on here!!! One of the best "albums" of the year! I am looking forward to missy as well but moreso Monica. I think we forget (with good reason sometimes) how she really was one of the few that was spread all throughout the 90s and brought the heat. I'm not even going to discuss L. Hill. She hurt my feelings so bad. I still blame her for not staying in the game long enough to past the baton to Alicia and meanwhile let all these impostors in-like Ashanti. I will say i am looking forward to 2010-a new decade and a new sound. Oh i think you shouldve did a singles of the year list-Down and whatcha say should def be on it :). I think a good idea for this upcoming year would be to do a month in review throughout the year that way the rap up at the end of the year would be a lot easier.

Agree with everything...except that Colour me free position! I mean, it's not her best album, ok...but it is quite good, dont think it is disapppointing. After all she had to produce everything alone with some producers friends, cause the studio didnt gave her a chance. She fought the machine in this album, and i think that it is epic cause of that. No artists fight anymore against the studios. Congrats for the rest. Alicia is truly perfect.

I really disagree with a lot of albums on this list! Lol While some had great songs on the albums, as a whole they fell flat! But you can tell you really dedicated your ear to these albums so I guess we're just have different taste!

Nice list, looks like we have pretty similar taste. I agree that So Far Gone is the best mixtape, and Fantasy Ride was SUCH a disappointment. There are a few recommendations I'll take from this-- Melanie Fiona, Ryan Leslie & Maxwell. Thanks! & yes, Erykah needs to hurry with that next album...

No Trish Andrews on the list??? :-( I'm an Independent artist of course, but ranked very high overseas. Especially for the single entitled "Comfort Zone". Very understandable...a lot of people are still not aware of the album entitled "These Five Words" or the latest video released entitled "Back To You"

Good post. I totally agree with what you said about Tonex. The most underrated artist of the decade, and thats a crime!

The only thing I disagree with is the disappointing albums because I liked Ciara, Kris and Joss. The worst albums I've rated thus far would be Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber, 50 Cent and Daughtry, lol.

I like your post some of the artist I have not heard of before or listened to their albums but I will. I think you should have added Latoya Luckett album Lady Love to the best 09 list. And I agree with some a guy up top that Monica should have been listed on Most Anticipated Albums of 2010.

Ahhh, this was very good, and in depth... Why'd you stop making Best Of lists???
