    Over 200 photographs from the first two days of Comic Market 81 have been uploaded to our flickr photo album. They include photos with videogame musicians Daisuke Amaya, Hiroyuki Iwatsuki, Kou Ogata, Julie Watai, Hiroshi Okubo, Hiroki Kikuta, Ayako Saso and Shinji Hosoe. Further images will be made available tomorrow from the final day of Comiket at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center.



    Fami-Mode returns to Kichijouji on January 28, 2012

    Tokyo's METEOR game culture shop is preparing its next annual all-night Fami-Mode Famicom party, which will take place at the Star Pine's Cafe in Kichijouji on January 28, 2012. This year performers will include Omodaka, Professor Sakamoto, Sexy-Synthesizer, Penny and Ashtray, and Kplecraft.


    Austin Wintory to present at GDC on Journey and Monaco

    Composer Austin Wintory will present at the 2012 Game Developers Conference on music for two independent games. Journey is being developed at ThatGameCompany and features sound design by Steve Johnson. Monaco by Andy Schatz won the top prize at the Independent Games Festival in 2010. The composer previously wrote the music score for ThatGameCompany's flOw.


    Bandcamp page opens for I Am Robot and Proud

    Toronto-based electronic artist Shaw-Han Liem of I Am Robot and Proud is collaborating with Everyday Shooter creator Jonathan Mak on the development of music game Sound Shapes for PlayStation Vita. Two of the artist's albums released in 2007, titled My Sky Your Sky and Travel Sounds, are now available to stream in full and purchase online through Bandcamp. Tour t-shirts are also available.


    Darren Korb to present on Bastion sound design at GDC 2012

    Supergiant Games audio director Darren Korb will be presenting at the 2012 Game Developers Conference. The lecture "Build That Wall: Creating the Audio for Bastion" will cover steps in the musician's creative process, from crafting the title's "eclectic acoustic frontier trip-hop soundtrack and haunting vocal melodies, to its innovative reactive narration and sound effects." GDC will take place March 5-9 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.


    Independent Games Festival reveals 2012 audio jury panel

    The Independent Games Festival organizers have revealed the audio jury panel for the 2012 awards, taking place at GDC. They are: music director Emily Ridgway of Double Fine, David Lloyd and Larry Oji of OverClocked ReMix, composer Chris Schlarb of NightSky, audio director Darren Korb of Supergiant Games, Matthew Burns of Shadegrown Games, designer Dylan Fitterer of Audiosurf, audio lead Matt 'Chainsaw' Chaney of Twisted Pixel and lead designer James Barker of GL33K.


    Canabalt ported to Commodore 64

    Paul Koller's conversion of Adam Atomic's Canabalt runs on the 8-Bit, 1Mhz Commodore 64c. The SID chip rendition of Danny Baranowsky's 'RUN' is by Mikkel Hastrup, created for Retro Gamer CD's 16KB C64 dev competition in 2011. The demake can be downloaded from CSDB and run on an emulator, and will be available to purchase on a limited edition C64 cartridge in 2012.

    Machinarium bonus EP free on Bandcamp

    Samorost series composer Tomas Dvorak (Floex) previously released a free batch of mp3s from Amanita Design's Machinarium, music not found on the adventure title's soundtrack album. Those five tracks can now be downloaded in lossless file formats for free from the artist's Bandcamp page. Independently financed, Machinarium has earned numerous accolades and found its way onto various gaming platforms, among them the PC, Mac, iPad and PlayStation 3.


    OverClocked Remix releases Wild Arms remix album

    OverClocked ReMix has released Armed and Dangerous, a free Wild Arms remix album, celebrating the 15th anniversary of the PlayStation role-playing game. Arranging compositions by Michiko Naruke, the compilation is directed by Jennifer Aguirre and features arrangements by Mazedude, ilp0, k-wix, FFmusic DJ, Dj Mokram and Malcos, among other artists.


    Pulse: It's a Prime Christmas album free to download

    Cipher Prime has released a four-track album available through Bandcamp for free download in your file format of choice, containing holiday downloadable content added to Pulse: Volume One for iPad. Pulse: It's a Prime Christmas includes music by composers 6955 of Super T.I.M.E. Force!, Leemus Music of Dependant, Jim Guthrie of Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery, as well as chiptune artist Doomcloud.


    Square Wail shares chiptune album A Merry Christmas

    Seattle-based Game Boy group Square Wail (Matt and Rebecca Kenall) posted an 8-bit Christmas album for free download through Bandcamp. A Merry Christmas is twelve tracks of low-fi yuletide jingles, including "Carol Of The Bells," "Little Drummer Boy" and "Silent Night." The musicians' previous releases include Stenobot / Square Wail, which became available through Bandcamp back in September.



    Sengoku IXA soundtrack samples online

    Square Enix has posted samples of every track from the soundtrack to Sengoku IXA. The historical browser game, a partnership with Yahoo, features thirteen music tracks by Pax Japonica Groove, Hidenori Iwasaki, Naoshi Mizuta, Mitsuto Suzuki and various in-house composers at Square Enix.


    Final Fantasy XIII-2 soundtrack website updated with further samples

    Square Enix's official website for the four-disc Final Fantasy XIII-2 soundtrack has been updated with samples of additional music tracks. 31 samples in total are online, composed by Masashi Hamauzu, Naoshi Mizuta and Mitsuto Suzuki, with vocals by Origa, Joelle, Michiyo Honda and Shootie HG.



    Ari Pulkkinen releases Trine 2 soundtrack special edition

    Trine series composer Ari Pulkkinen has released the special edition soundtrack to Trine 2 by Frozenbyte, out this week on Steam, Xbox 360 and PlayStation Network. The album includes 21 music tracks found in the game, along with two additional orchestral renditions, and can be purchased as mp3s or flac files by credit card through the artist's aritunes.com website.


    DJ Cutman and Spamtron release Zelda II remix album

    Musicians DJ Cutman and Spamtron have released remix album Bagu and the Riverman, created in collaboration over the internet. The five track EP, available to stream in full on Banecamp, arranges Akito Nakatsuka's original compositions from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link for the Nintendo Entertainment System.


    Alessandro Coronas releases Where Is My Heart soundtrack

    Composer Alessandro Coronas has released the soundtrack to Where Is My Heart? The album for the independently developed puzzle game for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable is developed by Die Gute Fabrik and designed by Bernie Schulenburg. The album features ten tracks and an acoustic arrangement and is available to stream online through Bandcamp.


    Jonathan Baken shares PxTone 2006 - 2011 unreleased tracks

    Jon Baken of the chiptune music group George and Jonathan has posted an album of unreleased tracks to Bandcamp, created using Daisuke Amaya's PxTone Collage software. The 18 tracks, developed between 2006 and 2011, can be downloaded in your file format of choice for "name your price."


    Minibosses release brass 2: mouth album

    Game cover band Minibosses have released album brass 2: mouth through Bandcamp. The 18-track collection includes arrangements of classic game themes from Excitebike, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Tecmo Bowl, Kid Icarus, Super Mario Bros. 3 and The Goonies II. A special edition vinyl record is also in the works.


    Minecraft composer shares album Seven Years of Server Data

    C418, the composer of Mojang's popular sandbox game Minecraft, has released an 18-track collection through Bandcamp for "name your price." Titled "Seven Years of Server Data," the album is comprised of older compositions, along with some more recent remixes of music, arranging tracks by Big Giant Circles, Deadmau5 and Mattias Häggström Gerdt of Cobalt.


    Phoenix Rise releases Melancholy Tribute to Final Fantasy VII

    TPR of Phoenix Rise Music, a 24-year-old pianist from the South of England, has focused on the darker aspects of Nobuo Uematsu's first PlayStation RPG score with the release of classically inspired fan arrange album "A Melancholy Tribute to Final Fantasy VII." The thirteen track tribute album is currently available for purchase on Amazon, iTunes and CD Baby, elaborating on a number of the tense and dread-inducing compositions on the soundtrack.     Bad Dudes release Metroid Arrange 25th Anniversary Album

    Game cover band Bad Dudes of "Chronotorious" have released Metroid Arrange 25th Anniversary Album through Bandcamp. Both limited edition compact discs and digital downloads are available for purchase, including 14 arranged tracks from various Metroid game series titles.


    Temp Sound Solutions releases tenth arrange album

    Game cover band Temp Sound Solutions has released their tenth game arrange album, gloriously entitled "now youre playing with powar x: endgame." Created by shawn phase, housethegrate, kirby pufocia and spookmeister, the album's 12 tracks cover Gauntlet, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mega Man 10 and other sprite-based game titles, with five of the songs available to stream in full on Bandcamp.


    Inverse Phase releases soundtrack to Shuttle Scuttle

    Chip musician Inverse Phase has released the soundtrack to space shooter Shuttle Scuttle, developed by Embraceware for iOS and Mac. The 17-track NES-influenced album is available to stream online in full and purchase through Bandcamp. The artist's previous releases include Super Smash Land and Retrocovered.


    Super Meat Boy Choice Piano Cuts released

    Ten piano arrangements by Brent Kennedy have been released as an album under the title Super Meat Boy Choice Piano Cuts.     Earlier this week, Square Enix streamed a forty-minute mixtape of numerous music tracks from their latest role-playing game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 during a Ustream event. Today that program, "Final Fantasy XIII-2 Mitsuto Suzuki Balearic Mix," has been uploaded to Square Enix's YouTube channel, previewing music from the soundtrack by Suzuki, Naoshi Mizuta and Masashi Hamauzu.

    Francisco Furtado has released his soundtrack to Flash game Freeway Fury 2 for free download through Bandcamp. The racing car theft game is available to play on Newgrounds, developed by Serius Games and featuring twelve music tracks.



    Terraria soundtrack now on Bandcamp

    The soundtrack for PC adventure game Terraria is now available for purchase through Bandcamp. Developed by Re-Logic, the title offers 2D sidescrolling sandbox play and randomly generated worlds to explore, with music by Scott Lloyd Shelly of Resonance Array. Released this week, the 13-track soundtrack is streaming in full on Bandcamp.


    Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception soundtrack on iTunes

    The soundtracks to Uncharted 1 through 3 are now on iTunes and the PlayStation Network. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception features a score by Greg Edmonson, with Azam Ali and JD Mayer.     Bradley Smith releases Classic Chips classical chiptune album

    Game developer and musician Bradley Smith of Ontario, Canada has released an 11-track chiptune album titled "Classic Chips." The compilation includes music by classical composers Claude Debussy, Johann Sebastian Bach and Arnold Schönberg, performed on a Nintendo Entertainment System and related chipsets.     Infinity Blade soundtrack on iTunes and Amazon

    The soundtrack to Infinity Blade is now available for download on iTunes and Amazon. The 25-track album by Shadow Complex composer Josh Aker clocks in at just under an hour in length. Utilizing Unreal Engine 3 technology, the action RPG for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch was developed by Epic Games' studio ChAIR.


    Jamestown: Legend Of The Lost Colony soundtrack on Bandcamp

    Final Form Games has made the soundtrack to old school sidescrolling shoot 'em up Jamestown: Legend Of The Lost Colony available for purchase through Bandcamp.     Game composer Mattias Häggström Gerdt has released an EP of music from Cobalt, Mojang's upcoming 2D action game, developed by Oxeye. The game score was a finalist in the 2011 Independent Games Festival in the excellence in audio category.     Velocispider composer Whitaker Blackall has released his soundtrack to Cardinal Quest through Bandcamp.     Hitoshi Sakimoto scores Guild 01's Crimson Shroud

    During the Level-5 Vision conference, the publisher released a reveal trailer for 3DS game compilation Guild 01. In addition to three other games, including one by Suda51, Guild 01 will include an adventure game named Crimson Shroud, introduced in the video by designer and scenario writer Yasumi Matsuno of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. Briefly teased in the final segment of the trailer, Shroud will feature art design by Hideo Minaba and music by Hitoshi Sakimoto of Basiscape.


    Pixeljam's DinoRubbish MegaBundle is #1 on Bandcamp

    For the next 24 hours, independent developer Pixeljam Games is offering the soundtracks for both Dino Run SE (Mark DeNardo) and Space Rubbish (Datassette), in addition to full versions of both games for Mac, PC and Linux for "pay what you want."     Wayô Records announces Michiru Oshima Paris concert

    Wayô Records, organizers of the 2011 Masashi Hamauzu Paris concert, has announced plans for Melodies in the Mist, featuring live music by Michiru Oshima. The artist has written for film and anime, but when it comes to games she is best known for her original score for ICO. Oshima has also contributed compositions to Legend of Legaia and Legaia 2: Duel Saga. The concert is scheduled for early 2012.

    Songs we heard in ilomilo remix album free to download

    Composer Daniel Olsén has released a remix album, arranging music from the Xbox Live Arcade puzzle title ilomilo by Southend Interactive. Participating musicians include Bumpy Road game designer Simon Flesser, VVVVVV composer SoulEye and Cobalt's Mattias Häggström Gerdt. The eight-track album is free to download in your file format of choice from Bandcamp. We helped out some with the liner notes, too.


    m7kenji's Blip Festival Tokyo iOS / Android application

    VJ m7kenji has released an interactive Blip Festival Tokyo iOS application for iPhone / iPad (http://bit.ly/qN1qhc) and Android (http://bit.ly/pA9mQ1).     OverClocked ReMix releases Around the World compilation

    Online game arrangement community OverClocked Remix has released Around the World for free download, a compilation arranging music from 1987 NES sports game Super Dodge Ball, composed by Kazuo Sawa. The album was directed by Kyle Crouse, featuring arrangements by Protricity, Dj Mokram, Mega Ran, WillRock and 8 Bit Instrumental, among other artists.


    Vampire Variations Castlevania tribute album free to download

    Nitro Game Injection and project director Alexandre Mourey have released Vampire Variations, a 19-track Castlevania tribute album, created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Konami game series. Fourteen participating musicians have contributed arrangements of music from the first Castlevania game, composed by Kinuyo Yamashita, including Stemage, Chernabogue and Dj Mokram.



    Muramasa: The Demon Blade Arranged album now on iTunes

    Basiscape Records has released their Muramasa: The Demon Blade Arranged album for download through iTunes. The 14-track album includes acoustic renditions of music from the Wii action title composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, Masaharu Iwata, Mitsuhiro Kaneda and others, arranged by Kimihiro Abe, Azusa Chiba, Yoshimi Kudo and Basiscape. Included is an orchestral recording performed at the Press Start Symphony of Games in Tokyo.


    Stemage releases Grandia II Frets of Valmar EP

    In March, MAGFest organized a fundraiser for Tohoku earthquake relief. As a direct result, Stemage has released Frets of Valmar, his Grandia II cover EP, through Bandcamp. The album features compositions by Noriyuki Iwadare and performances by Danimal and Chris from Armcannon, as well as Chunkstyle from Yes, Mayhem. Donations made with the download of the EP will go to Red Cross Japan.


    Vibes Against Vibes charity albums released by Baiyon

    PixelJunk 4am art and music director Baiyon has released a two-volume charity album called Vibes Against Vibes through his netlabel Descanso. The albums include music by Hip Tanaka.ex, who previously contributed to the Play For Japan charity album. Also participating is Shaw-Han Liem, the audio director on PlayStation Vita title Sound Shapes. Proceeds will be donated in full to Tohoku earthquake relief efforts.


    Labyrinth chiptune album by Leeni on Bandcamp

    Seattle-based chiptune artist Leeni's 9-track album Labyrinth is currently available to stream in full and download from Bandcamp for "name your price." The artist's previous release, The Only Now, incorporates Game Boy, drum machines and vocals, and can be found on the same Bandcamp page.


    Trauma soundtrack by Martin Straka now on Bandcamp

    Martin Straka has released his soundtrack to the independently produced title Trauma through Bandcamp. The point-and-click adventure game by Krystian Majewski tells the story of a young woman who survives a car accident and introduces an innovative gesture-based interface. The soundtrack was a finalist in the 2010 IGF Awards' Excellence in Audio category.


    Sabrepulse releases Bit Pilot soundtrack

    Chip musician Sabrepulse has released his soundtrack to independent game Bit Pilot through Bandcamp. The well received asteroid avoidance iOS title is a collaboration with designer Zach Gage (also of IndieCade finalist Halcyon), featuring seven music tracks created using Little Sound DJ for the Nintendo Game Boy. Cover artwork is by Ted Martens, with special thanks for the album given to Lazerbeat.


    Grand Knights History soundtrack now on iTunes

    Basiscape Records has released the soundtrack to PlayStation Portable fantasy RPG Grand Knights History through iTunes. The 22-track album produced by Hitoshi Sakimoto includes music composed by Mitsuhiro Kaneda, Masaharu Iwata, Yoshimi Kudo and Noriyuki Kamikura. Xseed has secured the rights to publish the Vanillaware developed game in North America.


    George & Jonathan release Beautiful Lifestyle album

    Chip music group George & Jonathan (George Michael Brower and Jonathan Baken) has released their third album on Bandcamp, entitled Beautiful Lifestyle. The duo utilizes Daisuke Amaya's PxTone Collage software, the same program used to write the soundtrack to Cave Story, to compose their original music. The 12 track album can be streamed in full on Bandcamp, while track "Burning Up Inside" is free to download.


    Pixeljams Volume 1 collection on Bandcamp

    A collection of "new and used tracks" from the independently financed Pixeljam Team has been posted to Bandcamp. Included is music by Mark DeNardo, Miles Tilmann, John Davies (Datassette), Martin Dosh and Kate Simko. Pixeljam was #1 on the Bandcamp charts last week for their DinoRubbish MegaBundle promotion, including full soundtracks for Dino Run SE and Space Rubbish.



    Botanicula teaser trailer by Amanita Design

    Amanita Design's latest point and click exploration title, Jára Plachý's Botanicula, has a new teaser trailer. Five tiny tree creatures set out on a journey to save the last seed from their home tree, which is infested by evil parasites. The game's soundtrack and sound effects are by Czech alternative band DVA. Release on PC, Mac and tentatively iOS and Android is planned for early 2012.

    Blip Festival Tokyo 2011 lineup announced

    Piano Collections Final Fantasy I・II・III album announced

    Famitsu Magazine has run an interview with game composer Nobuo Uematsu and pianist Hiroyuki Nakayama announcing a new piano arrange album. Piano Collections Final Fantasy I・II・III, due out in 2012, is confirmed to include the Rebel Army theme from Final Fantasy II, which will be included on Square Enix's 12-track Tokyo Game Show CD sampler.


    Final Fantasy XI Vana'con orchestral concert planned for November

    Square Enix will hold an orchestral concert of music from Final Fantasy XI on November 11, 2011, titled Vana♪con. Performed by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Masahiko Enkoji, the concert will take place at the Symphony Hills Mozart Hall in Tokyo. Tickets will become available starting September 27.


    Hiroki Kikuta & Yoko Shimomura Mana arrange albums planned

    Re:Birth / Seiken Densetsu, Kenji Ito's Mana arrange album, is planned for release on October 19 to commemorate the Mana series' 20th anniversary. Today's Tokyo Game Show Square Enix Music pamphlet relates that two additional arrange albums are in the works. Hiroki Kikuta (Secret of Mana) will release his in Winter of 2011, while Yoko Shimomura (Legend of Mana, Heroes of Mana) will debut another in the future.

    SQ Series:MEGA mix free to download

    Square Enix has uploaded a full seven-minute music track to the SQ Chips album website for free download. "SQ Series:MEGA mix" contains live club style remixes of ten tracks from the SQ arrange album series by DJ OMKT of Osaka (soundcloud.com/dj-omkt). The artist is currently contributing chiptune arrangements of the Chrono Trigger character theme medley and opening theme to the SQ Chips album, which is due out September 21.


    OverClocked ReMix releases Mega Man 9: Back in Blue

    Game arrangement community OverClocked ReMix has released their latest remix compilation, Mega Man 9: Back in Blue. Participants include Joshua Morse, Main Finger, k-wix, Mazedude and DarkeSword among others. Original compositions from the retro-themed Capcom platformer for WiiWare, XBLA and PSN are by Ippo Yamada and the Inti Creates sound team.


    Sdatcher fan translations in English and Spanish

    The first episode of Sdatcher, Suda 51's radio program based on the Hideo Kojima game Snatcher, has been subtitled in English and Spanish. The translation is by by YouTube user zajunker, who has registered the domain sdatcher.net for the videos. Music for the drama is by Grasshopper Manufacture's chief sound officer Akira Yamaoka. Act 2, "My first day on the job and now this," is coming soon.


    The Gunstringer soundtrack free to download

    The 26-track soundtrack to The Gunstringer is now available for free download via Twisted Pixel's official website for the game. The comical Old West shooter for Xbox 360's Kinect peripheral features music by Chainsaw and Audio Aggregate.


    Meteo Xavier's Meteocrity Vol. 1 album free to download

    Musician Meteo Xavier has posted a free 18-track, 50-minute album online. Published by ThaSauce netlabel Wardriver, Meteocrity Vol. 1 consists of unused tunes from videogame projects that never came to be, or are in the long process of coming to life. Album mastering is by UsabellChan.


    Escape From Puppy Death Factory soundtrack free to download

    Independent developer Arthur Lee (@MrPodunkian) of Merry Gear Solid 1 & 2 has released his soundtrack to Escape From Puppy Death Factory. Published by Adult Swim, the browser-based puzzle platformer stars Laika, the dog the Soviets sent to outer space in the 50′s, now back from orbit and armed with a laser cannon. The 16-track album can be downloaded for free from superfundungeonrun.com.



    Archylte Steppe FFXIII-2 by Naoshi Mizuta streaming online

    Co-composer Naoshi Mizuta is providing the theme for the Archylte Steppe location, featured in Final Fantasy XIII-2. A preliminary edition of the vocal track is currently streaming on the official Square Enix Music Blog, with the vocalist to be announced this weekend. The role-playing game is due out January 31 in North America for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.


    Sample Mitsuto Suzuki's Final Fantasy XII chiptune remix

    Final Fantasy XIII-2 co-composer Mitsuto Suzuki has uploaded a slightly modified sample of his contribution to Square Enix remix album SQ Chips, titled "PSG meets PS2." The demake sample uploaded to the Square Enix Music Blog contains more of the PlayStation 2 sound source compared with what is heard on the album. The track arranges "Near the Water" from Final Fantasy XII by composer Hitoshi Sakimoto, using a PSG sound chip.


    Missing Link from FFXIII-2 by Mitsuto Suzuki streaming online

    Mitsuto Suzuki has uploaded his song "Missing Link" from Final Fantasy XIII-2 to the official Square Enix Music Blog, where it can be streamed online. The vocal track features Russian singer Origa, known for her work in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. The role-playing game is due out January 31 in North America for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.



    Shadows of the Damned soundtrack CD now on sale

    Shadows of the Damned Original Music from Akira Yamaoka is now available for purchase via Grasshopper Manufacture's online store. The 21-track CD soundtrack features Mary-Elizabeth McGlynn and Troy Baker on "Take Me to Hell (Broken Dream)" and UK punk band The Damned on the title track. Yamaoka will be signing the first 300 soundtrack CDs requiring overseas shipping.


    Machinarium composer Floex releases Zorya album

    Tomas Dvorak, aka Floex, composed the music scores to Amanita Design's critically acclaimed point-and-click adventure titles Samorost 2 and Machinarium. The artist has just released his latest original album, the highly anticipated Zorya. Available to stream in full on Bandcamp, the album released on the Minority Records label contains 11 tracks of acoustic music, classical minimalism and contemporary electronic.


    Danny B.'s Binding of Isaac full soundtrack on Bandcamp

    Super Meat Boy composer Danny B. has released the full soundtrack to his second collaboration with game designer Edmund McMillen, The Binding of Isaac. The 28 track album includes a remix by Mass Effect 2 co-composer Big Giant Circles and an original track by Minecraft musician C418. The soundtrack can be streamed in its entirety on Bancamp or downloaded in your file format of choice for $1.


    6955 IN1ep now on Bandcamp

    Game composer and chiptune musician Jason DeGroot (6955) of the psychedelic PS3 racer Dyad has released a new six-track EP through Bandcamp, entitled IN1ep. The music, for imagined games and infinite trains, is the first in a planned series of releases. The album can be purchased digitally in your file format of choice, or physically on a limited edition CD-R, packaged in a plotter-printed, cut jacket.


    Mega Ran and K-Murdock release Forever Famicom DLC 2

    Hip-hop artists Mega Ran and K-Murdock have released their Forever Famicom DLC 2 album through Bandcamp.     Danimal Cannon rap video disses Jonathan Coulton

    PAX rivals Danimal Cannon (Armcannon, Metroid Metal) and Jonathan Coulton (Code Monkey, Still Alive) face off against each other in ArmCannonTV's debut music video. You can check out the Joco diss video on YouTube and download the mp3 for free from the Armcannon website.


    Machinarium for iPad 2 release trailer

    Amanita Design has released their independently developed point and click adventure game Machinarium for iPad 2, a port so substantial that it exceeds the technical capabilities of the original model iPad. (A whimsical live action trailer is now online.) Music for the critically acclaimed title is by Tomas Dvorak, whose highly anticipated new Floex album, titled "Zorya," is due out September 26 on Bandcamp.


    PixelJunk 4am Tokyo Game Show trailer

    PixelJunk lifelike, Q-Games' PlayStation Move music visualizer and generator has changed its name to PixelJunk 4am. Sound and art director Baiyon, also of PixelJunk Eden, describes the name as an atmosphere the design team is attempting to capture, "where there's still that little bit of time left before dawn." The Tokyo Game Show trailer for PixelJunk 4am can be viewed on YouTube.


    Monster Hunter 4 reveal trailer

    Capcom took the Nintendo 3DS conference taking place earlier today as their opportunity to announce Monster Hunter 4 for the portable console. A cinematic reveal trailer has since been uploaded, offering an idea of what to expect from the visual design of the title, though gameplay details have yet to be released. Music for the series has been composed by Masato Kouda, Yuko Komiyama and other artists working at Capcom.


    From Software studio tour precedes Dark Souls release

    Developer From Software has released a video in which senior managing director Eiichi Nakajima gives a tour of the studio. Game creators briefly appearing in the behind-the-scenes movie include design lead Daisuke Satake, Armored Core V producer Toshifumi Nabeshima, CG lead Takayuki Muro, and sound designer Hideyuki Eto.


    Persona 4 The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena reveal trailer
    Atlus has released their announcement trailer for Persona 4 The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena, a collaboration with BlazBlue developer Arc System Works. The fighter will invite players to swing swords as the Persona 4 protagonist, fire shots as P3 FES's Aegis, and jump kick as Chie at arcades and later on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2012. As revealed in today's trailer, the music score is being written by Persona series composer Shoji Meguro.



    OverClocked ReMix on participating in the IGF

    ICO: Castle in the Mist now in bookstores

    ICO: Castle in the Mist by Miyuki Miyabe is now available in bookstores and through online retailers. The novel based on the PlayStation 2 game is translated by Alexander O. The localization company is most recently responsible for Tactics Ogre for PSP and has worked extensively with Square Enix's music department, translating lyrics and even providing English language vocals.

    Composer Ryu Umemoto passes away at 37

    Cave composer Ryu Umemoto passed away on August 17 at the age of 37. The news was posted to the musician's twitter account by friends, together with the statement "Thank you for all of your encouragement in the past." Umemoto's most recent game scores for Cave had been NIN2-JUMP and Akai Katana.


    Lumines announced for PlayStation Vita

    At the Gamescom 2011 convention, Ubisoft has announced that a Lumines series installment will be included among the company's lineup of early PlayStation Vita titles. Whether the game will have new or old stages (or combine the two, as with Lumines Supernova) remains unknown. The music puzzle series has featured interactive original compositions by composers Takayuki Nakamura, Katsumi Yokota, h. ueda and Keiichi Sugiyama, among others.


    Persona 4: The Golden announced for PlayStation Vita

    This week's Famitsu Magazine is due to reveal Atlus's portable remake of Persona 4 for PlayStation Vita, titled Persona 4: The Golden. The Shin Megami Tensei enhanced port is said to introduce a new playable character named Marie, featuring an additional 50% more voice acting than the PlayStation 2 original. Directed by Dj Mokram, the album features 26 arrangements in a variety of styles, reinterpreting music tracks from Sega Genesis sidescroller Dynamite Headdy, developed by Treasure in 1994.


    Casanova single by Machinarium's Floex free to download

    Tomas Dvorak (Floex), the composer of the Machinarium and Samorost 2 game scores, has released the single "Casanova" for free download via Bandcamp. The music tracks will appear on the artist's upcoming album Zorya, scheduled for release on September 26 on the Minority Records label.


    Aycomusic releases Final Fantasy VI acoustic collection 1.5

    Vancouver-based artist Eiko Ishiwata has released Final Fantasy VI Acoustic Collection 1.5 for free download in mp3 format. The nine-track not-for-profit album, part of the Aycomusic series, arranges Nobuo Uematsu's music from the classic Squaresoft role-playing game using live instrumentation, engineered and recorded by the artist.


    Ringo iPhone app by chiptune VJ m7kenji free to download

    Into the chiptunes? Tokyo-based VJ m7kenji has released his 8-bit influenced iPhone application Ringo for free download. The designer has previously performed visuals live at the Blip Festival Tokyo and Cheapbeats chip parties. His game depicts a safe world devoid of enemies or obstacles, where your only goal is to collect apples!



    Bastion soundtrack now on Bandcamp

    Supergiant Games has released the soundtrack album to Bastion, published on Xbox Live Arcade by WB Games and on its way to PCs August 16. The 22-track album can be streamed in its entirety on Bandcamp and downloaded for $10. Music for the independently developed action role-playing game is by Darren Korb.


    Final Fantasy Legends soundtrack album released

    Square Enix has announced a digital soundtrack album release for Final Fantasy Legends: Warriors of Light and Darkness. The Japan-only cellphone role-playing game, created in installments, features original music by Final Fantasy XI composer Naoshi Mizuta. The 43-track soundtrack is currently on sale through iTunes in Japan under the catalog number SQEX-50031, and brief samples of each track can be heard online.


    NieR Tribute Album -echo- sample tracks online

    The official website for Square Enix's NieR Tribute Album -echo- now includes three sample tracks under the "Track List" section. Uploaded to YouTube, the 90 second samples are "Kainé" by matryoshka, "Emil" by Ametsub, and "Summer Snow" by worlds end girlfriend. The album is scheduled to go on sale on September 14 in Japan.


    Cheapshot & ??? - Remixes EP on Bandcamp

    Tokyo-based musician Cheapshot (James York) and chiptune superstar ??? have teamed up for a four-track album of original and remixed music. The Remixes EP can be downloaded in your file format of choice from Bandcamp for "name your price," or streamed in its entirety on the website.


    Products of Science album by Supercommuter on Bandcamp

    Seattle chiptune trio Supercommuter has uploaded their new 12-track album Products of Science to Bandcamp, preceding their live performance at PAX Prime later this month. Music is by Wheelie Cyberman, Stenobot and Tron Juan. All proceeds from sales of the album will benefit Child's Play, a charity dedicated to providing toys and games to hospitalized children.


    Leeni's new album is The Only Now

    Musician Stemage (Grant Henry) of the Metroid Metal cover band has released his latest studio album, entitled Zero Over Zero, distributed through Silent Uproar Records. The guitar-driven, 20-track instrumental narrative, inspired by Dawn of the Dead (1978), is available to stream in its entirety through Bandcamp. Metroid Metal will perform live at the Penny Arcade Expo next weekend.


    Omodaka album Sanosa now on Hear Japan

    Chiptune artist Omodaka combines traditional Japanese and early game console music styles. Each track of his new album Sanosa can be sampled on Hear Japan. In addition, a full music video for "Hietsuki Bushi" can be viewed on YouTube, created by the Tokyo artist's studio Far East Recording. Omodaka has performed at the annual Fami-Mode Famicom festival and the Cheapbeats chiptune party.



    Akira Yamaoka scores Sine Mora

    Grasshopper Manufacture has released the debut teaser trailer for Sine Mora, featuring music by Akira Yamaoka. The sidescrolling shooter for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation 3, incorporating time manipulation mechanics, is being developed by Hungary's Digital Reality, developer of PC strategy games Imperium Galactica and Hegemonia: Legions of Iron. A brief teaser trailer can now be viewed online.


    echochrome strings concert in Russia videos online

    echochrome composer Hideki Sakamoto has posted two videos from the echochrome strings concert in Russia, conducted by Eisuke Fujino. The movies, taking place in St. Petersburg on July 11, 2011, feature tracks Prime #7, Prime #457, Prime #233 and Prime #61 from the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable puzzle title by Sony Computer Entertainment.


    Akira Yamaoka introduces Black Knight Sword at Gamescom

    Grasshopper Manufacture's chief sound officer Akira Yamaoka made an appearance at Gamescom in Cologne to introduce Black Knight Sword, developed by Digital Reality of Sine Mora for PSN and XBLA. A video from the convention shows Yamaoka describing the gameplay as a throwback to sidescrolling classics, which is demonstrated as taking place behind the curtain of a puppet play.

    Akira Yamaoka discusses the creation of the fundraising initiative Play For Japan in an interview posted today, joined by two participants of the charity album. Hip Tanaka.β performs chiptunes, techno and electronica at clubs and cafes in Tokyo. Mitsuto Suzuki is one of three composers currently writing music for Square Enix's upcoming role-playing game Final Fantasy XIII-2, and the composer of original albums In My Own Backyard and Neurovision.

    Akira Yamaoka scores Snatcher radio drama

    Game creator Hideo Kojima of Konami's Metal Gear Solid franchise is joining forces with Grasshopper Manufacture for an original radio drama based on the 1988 MSX2 game Snatcher. The radio drama's transfarrific title is "Sdatcher," and will appear on the 300th episode of the Hideradio podcast. Music is being written by Akira Yamaoka, with a script by Suda 51, and character design by Satoshi Yoshioka.


    Re:Birth Kenji Ito Mana arrange album website now live

    Square Enix has launched the website for Kenji Ito's upcoming 16-track album featuring arrangements of music from the Seiken Densetsu series. So far the confirmed tracks are "Rising Sun," "Mission of Mana," and "Searching for the Holy Sword" and "Last Battle" from Sword of Mana, and "Fool's Dance" along with "Unending Dream" from Dawn of Mana. A music sample is streaming on the website.


    DN3 samples L.A. Noire for hip-hop single "The LA Fire"

    A hip-hop single titled "The LA Fire" has been posted to Bandcamp for free download by the Writers Guild. Produced by DN3 of Mega Ran 9, the song samples the main theme from Rockstar Games' L.A. Noire, composed by Andrew Hale. "LA Fire" lyrics are by M. Velasco, J. Correa, D. Miranda, J. Raiford and R. Jarbo (aka Mega Ran).


    Final Fantasy Type-0 soundtrack site now open

    Square Enix has opened the official soundtrack album website for their PlayStation Portable action role-playing game Final Fantasy Type-0. The game will arrive on two UMDs in October in Japan. A special edition of the album is slated for an October 12 release and will come on three CDs, bundled together with a game trailer DVD. Music for the title is by Takeharu Ishimoto.


    3-Disc Ace Combat: Assault Horizon soundtrack announced

    Namco Bandai Games Japan has announced a pre-order bundle for Ace Combat: Assault Horizon that includes a three-disc soundtrack album. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 flight simulator includes sound direction by series composer Keiki Kobayashi. The game is due out internationally the week of October 11.


    Raiden music collection due out September 28

    Record label Team Entertainment has announced a four-disc compilation of music from the Raiden series, entitled Raiden - The Lightning Strikes Back - Retro Game Music Collection EX. The item will include background from Raiden (1990 arcade), Raiden II (1993 arcade), Raiden DX (1994 arcade), Raiden DX PS (1997 PlayStation), Raiden III (2005 arcade) and Raiden IV (2007 arcade). The album is due out September 28 in Japan, with music by Go Sato and other artists.

    Splatterhouse Butchered by Various Artists free to download

    Howard Drossin has released a free album of remixes from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 release of Splatterhouse by Namco Bandai Games. The 13-track album includes arrangements by Tony Dickinson, Eiko Ishiwata, Gryzor87, Matheus Manente, Nijeil, kt2, Mattias Häggström Gerdt, Chris Geehan, ThePlasmas, Pocket Groovy, Professor Kliq and other artists. The liner notes for the free album, which I contributed to, are in the style of IWADON and Hydorah Arranged Tracks.


    Portal 2 Soundtrack Volume 2 now free to download

    Valve has released the second of three planned volumes of music from Portal 2, available for free download. The downloadable zip file titled "Songs to Test By Volume 2" includes 18 music tracks, with 14 tunes available as ringtones. The soundtrack to the PC, Mac OS X, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 puzzle game is composed by Mike Morasky.


    4mat Blip Festival live set free to download

    Game composer and chiptune artist Matt Simmonds of 4mat fame has uploaded his forty-minute Blip Festival 2011 live set for free download from the Free Music Archive. There you can also find his albums Decades, Surrender and Legacy Trails. The artist has been creating music and sound design for games since the early 1990s and blogs about audio creation at ihearthesoundofwaves.


    OverClocked ReMix releases NiGHTS: Lucid Dreaming

    Online game arrangement community OverClocked ReMix has released their 26th album, NiGHTS: Lucid Dreaming. The compilation commemorates the 15th anniversary of Nights into Dreams... for the Sega Saturn and PlayStation 2. Original compositions from the Sega game are by Naofumi Hataya, Tomoko Sasaki, and Fumie Kumatani.


    Saira soundtrack by Nifflas free to download

    Swedish indie game creator Nifflas has won accolades for his PC titles Knytt Stories, Within a Deep Forest and NightSky. The designer's music to Saira is now available for free download in mp3 format from the Nifflas website. Music for the game is by Nicklas Nifflas Nygren (composer of Brutally Unfair Tactics Totally OK Now) and Yann van der Cruyssen (arranger for Cave Story WiiWare).


    Antipole soundtrack free to download

    Independent developer Saturnine Games has released the soundtrack album for Antipole for free download in mp3 format. The platformer, originally released for Xbox Live Indie Games and PC, is making its way to Nintendo DSiWare later this week. Music for the game is composed by Zack Parrish, featuring a guitar performance by Anthony Morgan.



    Play For Japan: The Album now on iTunes

    Play For Japan: The Album is scheduled for release on Amazon on July 15. However the album is currently available for purchase on iTunes Stores in the US and UK. Organized by Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill), PFJ features music by numerous game composers, including Woody Jackson (Red Dead Redemption), Mitsuto Suzuki (Final Fantasy XIII-2), Hip Tanaka (Dr. Mario), Koji Kondo (Super Mario Bros.) and Laura Shigihara (Plants vs Zombies). Proceeds will go to the Red Cross in Japan.


    IMERUAT single now on iTunes

    Masashi Hamauzu's single IMERUAT is now available for purchase on iTunes for $3. The three track EP, by the composer of Final Fantasy XIII and vocalist Mina, will be followed by further collaborations later this year. Tracks Cirotto, Imeruat and Harunokasumi can be sampled on iTunes as well as Myspace. The songs, produced by the composer's studio Monomusik, were recently performed at a Paris concert organized by Wayo Records and attended by producer Hironobu Sakaguchi.


    Splatterhouse (2010) soundtrack volumes 1 & 2 on Bandcamp

    Howard Drossin's two volume soundtrack to Splatterhouse (2010) for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is now available to stream in full and purchase from Bandcamp. Original Music as Heard in the Video Game Splatterhouse by Namco Bandai Games, Volume 1 includes 13 tracks of heavy metal music.     The Binding of Isaac soundtrack now on Bandcamp

    Super Meat Boy composer Danny B. has uploaded to Bandcamp the single-track soundtrack to The Binding of Isaac. The 4.5 minute music track can be downloaded in your file format of choice for "name your price." The Binding of Isaac, a roguelike by Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes of Team Meat, is due out later this month.


    Eufloria soundtrack now on Bandcamp

    The official 2-disc soundtrack for the independently developed ambient game Eufloria is available to stream for free in its entirety on Bandcamp. The 17-track album contains all in-game music, as well as additional tracks. The title is due out on the PlayStation 3 via the PlayStation Network later this year, with music by Brian Grainger of Milieu Music.



    Symphonic Odysseys videos now on YouTube

    YouTube user KajunW has uploaded 12 videos from the recent Symphonic Odysseys concert in Germany. The tribute to Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu included orchestral performances of music from King's Knight, Chrono Trigger, Lost Odyssey and The Last Story. All videos can be viewed on Helen's Nonsense Zone website.


    Persona 4 the Animation - Sky's the Limit trailer

    Persona 4 the Animation, developed by Aniplex, is scheduled to begin airing in October in Japan. The anime series will feature two new vocal themes by composer Shoji Meguro, along with vocalists Shihoco Hirata and Lotus Juice, of the PlayStation 2 role-playing game. Opener "Sky's the Limit" is featured in a new trailer released earlier today, while ending theme "Beauty of Destiny" by the same artists is also planned.


    Tim Schafer's Sesame Street pitch

    Tim Schafer and the Cookie Monster star in a new teaser trailer for Double Fine's Xbox 360 Kinect title Once Upon a Monster. The live action sketch offers a sense of the humor and playfulness that have set the writing for the studio's titles apart. The Sesame Street game will feature music by Peter McConnell of Brütal Legend and Psychonauts when it is released on October 26.



    8-4 podcast discusses Shadows of the Damned soundtrack
    The latest edition of the 8-4 Play podcast (entitled "¡QUE MAGNIFICO!") discusses the soundtrack to Grasshopper Manufacture's Shadows of the Damned with game composer Akira Yamaoka. The show also touches on the creation of the script for the third-person shooter published by Electronic Arts for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles. The show runs over two hours in total.

    Zelda 25th Anniversary Concert to tour US, Europe & Japan

    At today's Nintendo press conference preceding E3, designer Shigeru Miyamoto announced that a Zelda orchestral concert will be taking place, called The Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony. The concert will tour regions in the United States, Europe and Japan. Albums are also in the works for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and the symphony concert series.


    Yasunori Mitsuda's next project is Chrono Cross arrange album

    The oft-promised Chrono Cross arrange album appears to be one step closer to arrival. Chrono series composer Yasunori Mitsuda has posted a message to Facebook mentioning that he has completed his current project at Procyon and will be turning his attention to work on the arrange album. A firm release date has not yet been specified.


    High Frequency Bandwidth scores PixelJunk SideScroller

    PixelJunk SideScroller's music score marks Q-Games' third collaboration with UK hip-hop duo High Frequency Bandwidth. Reports from the show floor of E3 suggest three of the artists' favorite tracks from both PixelJunk Shooter 1 & 2 have been remixed to appear in the new title. Notably, vocalists Dynamax and Aadesh Shrivastava appear to be represented.


    Square Enix music department starts blog

    Square Enix's official website has launched the Square Enix Music Blog. There the staff will be posting Japanese-language entries and photos from the headquarters in Tokyo. There are also links to twitter accounts and Facebook pages for musicians and sound designers such as Naoshi Mizuta, Mitsuto Suzuki, Tsuyoshi Sekito, Takeharu Ishimoto, Hidenori Iwasaki, Yasuhiro Yamanaka and others.


    Akira Yamaoka scores Rebuild of Evangelion Sound Impact

    Grasshopper Manufacture is currently developing a rhythm game for the PlayStation Portable, based on the Rebuild of Evangelion feature films. Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka, the organizer of the Play For Japan charity album, will be contributing over 30 music tracks for the game, reportedly arrangements of Shirō Sagisu's music from the animated film and television series. A special edition will come with a CD soundtrack when the game is published by Bandai Namco on September 29 in Japan.


    Kind of Bloop's cover art cost $32,500

    Andy Baio of Waxy.org organized Kind of Bloop, a chiptune jazz album celebrating the historic Miles Davis album. Funded through Kickstarter, the compilation was a tremendous success, but not without cost. The sprite art cover of Davis caught the attention of attorneys representing New York photographer Jay Maisel, and the organizer writes in a blog entry posted this morning that he wound up settling out of court over alleged copyright violations for $32,500.


    Hitoshi Sakimoto scores Tekken Blood Vengeance

    MTV reports that Valkyria Chronicles series composer Hitoshi Sakimoto will be providing the music score for Tekken Blood Vengeance 3D. The computer generated movie will be appearing as part of a special PlayStation 3-exclusive bundle, including the film on Blu Ray disc and a copy of Tekken Tag Tournament HD. The film is being directed by Youichi Mouri, who directed the opening movies for both Tekken 5 and Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion.


    Bastion due out July 20 on Xbox Live Arcade

    Warner Bros will publish SuperGiant Games' independently developed action role-playing game Bastion on July 20 as part of the Xbox Summer of Arcade. The game was nominated for an Independent Games Festival award this year in the category of Excellence in Audio. Music and sound direction for the game are by Darren Korb.


    Kumi Tanioka scores Hansel and Gretel for iPhone and iPad

    Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series composer Kumi Tanioka has contributed music to Hansel and Gretel for iPhone and iPad. The storybook application available in multiple languages, based on the classic fairytale by the Brothers Grimm, has been adapted by DICO: Developers for International Communication. It is available for $3 on the App Store. Tanioka's other credits include Final Fantasy XI and Mario Sports Mix.

    KujaFFMan of French news source Final Fantasy World has posted on the composers announced for Final Fantasy XIII-2. Masashi Hamauzu will be returning to write original music for the direct sequel, due out on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in English langauge regions next year. The musician will be joined by Final Fantasy XI series composer Naoshi Mizuta and The Third Birthday co-composer Mitsuto Suzuki.

    Kplecraft EP L 012 debuts on 8bitpeoples label

    Chip music duo Kplecraft has released their second EP through the label 8bitpeoples, entitled L 012. The five-track album, a follow-up to the EP Multi-Boxer released four years ago, is currently available for download in a single zip file. Kuske can be heard on saxophone, clarinet, ukulele, recorder and Andes 25F, while Eddie mans the congas, bongos, ukelele, trumpet and trombone.


    4mat releases Legacy Trails album

    Chiptune musician and game composer Matt Simmonds has released his third full album of 4mat music on Bandcamp. The 13 track mixtape of new work follows albums Decades and Surrender, both of which are also available on 4mat.bandcamp.com and free to stream in their entirety. Album artwork is by psonice.


    Phoenix Wright Turnabout Musical album free to download

    The fan creators of Turnabout Musical: The Phoenix Wright Musical Project have posted a highlights album for free download. The 15 track collection is in mp3 format, bundled as a single zip file. The Turnabout play, featuring 30 original songs in total, has been in the works since 2007 and received official licensing recognition by Capcom.


    ilomilo soundtrack now available on CD Baby

    Xbox Live Arcade and Windows Phone 7 puzzle title ilomilo is by Swedish developer Southend Interactive. The 33-track soundtrack is now available to sample or purchase through CD Baby. The plush toy protagonists of the game were created by artist Simon Flesser, who also provided some of the childlike instrumental performances for the playful game score. Music composition and sound design are by Daniel Olsén.


    Saitone EP avaiable for download through SoundCloud

    Chiptune artist Saitone, based in Sagamihara, Japan, has uploaded a six-track EP available for free streaming and download from SoundCloud. The videogame-music friendly tracks include "DIGDUG Remix" and "gunpei-inheritance." This past September the musician performed at the Blip Festival Tokyo concert with Spanish VJ Raquel Meyers, playing his 8-bit remix of Michael Jackson's "Thriller."


    Team Hideo releases Songs From the Shiny Mug EP

    Fan-produced game concert Hideo premiered at the Zellerbach Auditorium in Berkeley last October, featuring music from ICO, Final Fantasy and Mega Man. The creators of the concert have released their first EP on iTunes, titled Songs From the Shiny Mug. The four-track album includes a rendition of Aria di Mezzo Carattere from Final Fantasy VI and can be downloaded for $4.


    Game Boy album 21 Years of Disappointment

    Chip musician Dakota Clark (Oven Rake) is 21, the same age as the Game Boy. The artist's new album on Bandcamp offers seven music tracks in the familiar style of the portable game console, available for "pay what you want" in your file format of choice.     La-Mulana Japanese launch trailer

    Tokyo-based independent developer Nigoro will launch their sidescroller La-Mulana for WiiWare on June 21 in Japan. A release date for the English-language localization, being handled by Cave Story publisher Nicalis, will likely be revealed next week at the E3 Expo. Music for the old school archaeological adventure game is by Naramura and Samejima, based on compositions written for the 2006 MSX-style PC freeware title of the same name.


    Persona 4 the Animation promo video 9

    Aniplex has been steadily uploading new trailers for Persona 4 the Animation, with number nine premiering most recently. The animated series appears to be clinging closely to the story of the game, even incorporating the close-up shots of protagonists' glasses as they prepare to strike down a shadow. Music for the anime, based on his original compositions, are being provided by Shin Megami Tensei series composer Shoji Meguro.


    Deus Ex: Human Revolution revenge trailer

    The latest trailer and a ten-minute play movie for Deus Ex: Human Revolution has appeared online preceding the game's playable demo at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles next week. The third title in the science fiction series, a prequel to the original, is being developed by Eidos Montreal and published by Square Enix. The story will revolve around Sarif Industries, a company that specializes in human augmentations in the year 2027. Music for the game is composed by Michael McCann.


    PixelJunk lifelike play movie on PlayStation Blog

    The official PlayStation Blog has posted a video interview with Q-Games president Dylan Cuthbert from the E3 Expo in Los Angeles. The movie includes sound and imagery from PixelJunk lifelike, the music generator and visualizer for the PlayStation Move controller. Music and art for the experimental software is by Kyoto DJ Baiyon, composer of PixelJunk Eden.


    Shaw-Han Liem demos Sound Shapes level editor

    Among the PlayStation Vita YouTube channel's first promotional movies is a video of musician Shaw-Han Liem (I Am Robot And Proud) demonstrating the Sound Shapes level editor. The Vita downloadable software, the musician's collaboration with Jonathan Mak of Everday Shooter, will include musical platforming levels and an editor so that custom stages can be shared over the PlayStation Network.



    Defining direction, writing, art and music on Yakuza 4

    Gamasutra has posted a discussion with the composer, director, scenario writer and art director of Yakuza 4. Sega's PlayStation 3-exclusive action title departed from previous entries in the series by offering four playable characters. The discussion centers on this and other design decisions, concluding with liner notes for four music tracks, available through Sega's official website, by series composer Hidenori Shoji.

    Chip Maestro is an NES MIDI synthesizer cart

    Biomedical engineer Jarek Lupinski from Hoboken, NJ, likes to reformat NES cartridges in his spare time. His latest creation is the Chip Maestro, which can be pre-ordered through Kickstarter for $50. The device will will make the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System synthesize live chip music by accepting a MIDI input from any instrument. The project will be funded on June 7.


    Shadows of the Damned preorders come with 12 music tracks

    Pre-orders of Grasshopper Manufacture's Shadows of the Damned from the EA Store, GameStop and Amazon will come with a free download of a 12-track soundtrack. The album will include "Theme of Shadows of the Damned," featuring the English gothic punk band The Damned. Music for the game, which is available June 21 for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, is by Silent Hill series composer Akira Yamaoka.


    Yuzo Koshiro scores 7th Dragon 2020

    Yuzo Koshiro will be reprising his role as composer on Sega's sequel to 7th Dragon. Instead of the Nintendo DS, the new game will appear on the Playstation Portable, and instead of a Medieval fantasy setting there is a futuristic neo-Tokyo beset by seven rampaging dragons to explore. Your party can choose among jobs representing dragonkind's natural foes: samurai, trickstar, destroyer, psychic and hacker. 7th Dragon 2020 is due out this fall in Japan.


    Akira Yamaoka reveals full lineup for Play for Japan benefit album

    Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka has announced the full lineup for Play for Japan: A Game Industry Relief Effort. The musician will be joined by Hip Tanaka.β (Mother), Laura Shigihara (Plants vs. Zombies), Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy), Tommy Tallarico (Advent Rising), Woody Jackson (Red Dead Redemption) and Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger), among other artists, all providing original compositions. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross.


    Hideki Sakamoto Orchestral Works due out in June

    Noisycroak Records will release the album Hideki Sakamoto Orchestral Works on June 22 in Japan, which will include recordings of the game composer's orchestral concert in St. Petersburg, Russia. The event was available to view in a one time only Ustream broadcast taking place earlier this morning. Arrangements are of Playstation Network titles echochrome and No Heroes Allowed.


    20-disc Mana series soundtrack box set announced

    Square Enix has announced that the next entry in their series of massive game soundtrack box sets will revolve around the Seiken Densetsu series of games, known here as World of Mana. The 20-disc box will include music from eight games (including Legend of Mana and Sword of Mana) as well as arranged albums of Final Fantasy Adventure and Secret of Mana. The collection will go on sale September 14 in Japan, with music by Kenji Ito, Hiroki Kikuta, Yoko Shimomura and other artists.


    Figaro Castle from Final Fantasy VI created in Minecraft

    YouTube user GDKT0486 has uploaded movies of three custom environments built in sandbox game Minecraft. They keep getting more elaborate and impressive. Following the construction of Tokyo Tower and Baron Castle, now there's a replica of Figaro Castle, home of King Edgar and Sabin in Final Fantasy VI. The background track on this video tour is by series composer Nobuo Uematsu.


    Josh Whelchel and Mattias Häggström Gerdt score Scrolls

    Mojang, the developers of Minecraft, have announced the music composers for their upcoming game Scrolls, which is being led by Swedish designer Jakob Porser. The game is being co-composed by Josh Whelchel, whose previous soundtracks include Chevy Ray Johnston's iPhone title Skullpogo. Co-composer Mattias Häggström Gerdt was a finalist in this year's Independent Games Festival Awards in the category of Excellence in Audio for his music for Cobalt.


    Vincent Diamante joins Skullgirls team as audio director

    Reverge Labs has assembled an impressive team for their fast-paced fighting game Skullgirls, which will be appearing as a downloadable title on home consoles later this year. Art is by Alex Ahad, whose illustrations have appeared in UDON’s Tribute books, while tournament champion Mike "Mike Z" Zaimont is serving as project lead. Castlevania series composer Michiru Yamane is providing the original score for the fighter. The composer of ThatGameCompany's Flower, Vincent Diamante, will serve as audio director.     Portal 2 Soundtrack Volume 1 free to download

    Bolstered by recent breakthroughs in the field of jazz smoothing, Aperture announced today the first of three downloadable aural stimulus packages. In other words, Valve has released the introductory volume of the Portal 2 soundtrack album for free download. Titled "Songs to Test By," the 22-track collection composed by Mike Morasky can be downloaded in mp3 format as a single zip file, with six of the tunes available as individual ringtones.


    Noby Noby Boy Soundtrack 2 on iTunes

    Namco Sounds, the iTunes soundtrack album series released by Namco Bandai Games, has published NobiTunes 0-----0 Noby Noby Boy Sound Track 2. Brief excerpts of the ten track album can be sampled online, while the album can be downloaded for $5. Music is by Yu Miyake, Sexy-Synthesizer and other artists.


    Chaos Rings Omega soundtrack debuts on iTunes
    Square Enix has published the digital soundtrack album for Chaos Rings Omega to iTunes. The prequel to the iOS role-playing game features eight new compositions by series composer Noriyasu Agematsu. The tracks can be sampled on the iTunes Store or purchased for $4. A sequel to Chaos Rings with music by the composer is currently under development.


    Virt's Mighty Milky Way soundtrack now on Bandcamp

    Game composer and chip musician Jake Kaufman (Virt) has posted his latest game soundtrack for WayForward Technologies to Bandcamp. This 28-track album contains music from puzzle games Mighty Flip Champs and Mighty Milky Way, both for Nintendo DSiWare.     Alice: Madness Returns soundtrack debuts on iTunes

    The 22-track digital soundtrack album for Alice: Madness Returns is now on sale on iTunes and Amazon. Music for the game is by composer Jason Tai, featuring Marshall Crutcher and Chris Vrenna. The horror title will be out for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on June 14.


    Starscream's Future, Towards the Edge of Forever on Bandcamp

    Chip music group Starscream has released an eight track album entitled "Future, Towards the Edge," which is now available to stream in its entirety on Bandcamp. All songs are written and performed by Damon Hardjowirogo and George Stroud, and recorded at Stratosphere Sound in New York. Engineering and mixing are by Gabe Liberti, while cover art is by Asif Siddiky, both of the documentary group 2 Player Productions.


    Tanuki Suit Riot's The Edo Sessions now on iTunes

    LA-based game cover band Tanuki Suit Riot has released their first full studio recording, The Edo Sessions, on iTunes.     Hear nine music tracks from Half-Minute Hero 2

    Marvelous Entertainment has uploaded nine music tracks from Half-Minute Hero 2, each by a seasoned Japanese game composer. While the tracks were only made available on Nico Nico Video, YouTube user CeltaHeaven has taken the liberty of converting all nine movies. Compositions are by Kenji Ito, Masashi Hamauzu, Yoko Shimomura, Motoi Sakuraba, Hiroyuki Iwatsuki, Yasunori Mitsuda, Yoshitaka Hirota, Masaharu Iwata and Michiko Naruke.


    Persona 4: the Animation's first four trailers

    Anime distributor Aniplex has uploaded four brief promo videos for Persona 4: the Animation, planned for release this fall in Japan. They include staticky glimpses of Yukiko and Kanji acting strangely on the Midnight Channel. (The previously unnamed, mute protagonist will now go by the tongue-in-cheek given name "Yu.")     Koichi Sugiyama scores Dragon Quest X

    Game creator Yuji Horii has confirmed that Dragon Quest X is still in development for the Nintendo Wii, despite no assets or details having been released for the high profile role-playing game. Square Enix plans to reveal the game toward the end of the year, most likely at September's Tokyo Game Show in Japan. The music score is being written by series composer Koichi Sugiyama.


    Shoji Meguro scores Persona 4 the Animation

    The story of Persona 4 begins on April 11, 2011. Atlus chose the special day to announce Persona 4 the Animation, an anime series by studio Anime International Company starring the cast of the Playstation 2 role-playing game. Music for the series is being composed by Shoji Meguro, which it appears will be available on DVD and a CD soundtrack album. The official website can be found at http://www.p4a.jp.


    Michiru Yamane scores Skullgirls

    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night composer Michiru Yamane has uploaded a video to YouTube, announcing that she will be scoring 2D fighting game Skullgirls. It marks the composer's first time working on an American game. The Reverge Labs developed title is planned for release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year.

    Amanita Design releases Osada interactive music video

    Amanita Design, the award-winning Czech game company behind Samorost 2 and Machinarium, has released an interactive music video online. "Osada" was created by animator Václav Blín, featuring Czech psychedelic country music composed and recorded by Šimon Ornest. Amanita is currently working on point-and-click adventure games Samorost 3 and Botanicula, as well as PS3 and Wii ports of Machinarium.


    PixelJunk Shooter 1 & 2 soundtrack now on iTunes

    High Frequency Bandwidth has released HFB: PixelJunked – The Original Soundtrack to Shooter 1 & 2 on iTunes. The music for the Playstation 3's Playstation Network title PixelJunk Shooter, developed by Kyoto-based independent studio Q-Games, earned the UK hip-hop duo a BAFTA nomination last year. All twelve tracks are by Alex Paterson and Dom Beken, with guest vocals by Dynamax and Aadesh Shrivastava.


    Bejeweled 3: Musical Quest now on Bandcamp

    The official, fully remastered soundtrack for PopCap casual game Bejeweled 3 is now available to stream for free and purchase digitally through Bandcamp. All twenty tracks are composed by Peter Hajba and and Alexander Brandon. The music was originally composed in OpenMPT, the open source ModPlug Tracker. For this album, it was processed with a suite of high quality mastering plugins.


    Basiscape's Oto Gift album now on iTunes

    Tokyo game sound studio Basiscape, whose titles include Muramasa: The Demon Blade and Valkyria Chronicles, has launched their six-track album Oto Gift on iTunes. Proceeds of the $5 digital album will go to earthquake relief. Music is by game composers Hitoshi Sakimoto, Azusa Chiba, Mitsuhiro Kaneda, Kimihiro Abe, Manabu Namiki and Yoshimi Kudo.


    Total War: Shogun 2 soundtrack released on iTunes

    The 28 track in-game soundtrack for Sega's Total War: SHOGUN 2 is now available in full on iTunes. Composer and audio director Jeff Van Dyke of Creative Assembly says, "Creating the Total War: SHOGUN 2 soundtrack was an amazing experience. The feel of the era, alongside working with talented musicians like Taikoz who performed the Japanese Taiko drums, and learning the subtleties of traditional Japanese instruments was truly inspiring.”


    Epic Games releases free soundtrack to Bulletstorm

    Earlier today Epic Games released the soundtrack to Bulletstorm as a free download. The downloadable zip file hosted on the developer's official website includes 24 mp3 files with music from the game. The soundtrack to the first-person shooter for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows was composed by Michal Cielecki and Krzysztof Wierzynkiewicz.


    Dino Run SE soundtrack now on Bandcamp

    Independent game developer Pixeljam has uploaded the soundtrack for Dino Run Special Edition for Mac, PC and Linux to Bandcamp. The five-track album in your file format of choice is available for free streaming in its entirety or download for $3, bundled with the full version of the game. Music is by Mark DeNardo, whose other game titles include Cream Wolf, Glorkian Warrior and Mountain Maniac.


    OC ReMix releases Sonic the Hedgehog: The Sound of Speed
    The Sound of Speed is the 25th album published by OverClocked ReMix and arranges music from the original Sonic the Hedgehog, which was released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive consoles. The compilation features thirteen tracks arranged by fifteen artists in a variety of styles and genres. Directed by Drew Wheeler (halc) the compilation is seen as a tribute to the beginnings of SEGA's flagship series and its music by Masato Nakamura.


    Viriax soundtrack available for free download

    Composer Gryzor87 has released the 11-track soundtrack album for medical action thriller Viriax. Music from the freeware PC game by Locomalito, created entirely using Daisuke Amaya's Pxtone Collage software, is available for download in mp3 format from the artist's homepage. The Spanish composer and game designer team's other titles include 8Bit Killer, Hydorah and L'Abbaye des Morts.


    Gryzor87 releases Shinobi-inspired Sounds & Shadows album

    Hydorah composer Gryzor87 has released a studio album entitled Sounds & Shadows. The project has been underway concurrently with the development of his scores for freeware titles L’abbaye des Morts and Viriax, released by Spanish developer Locomalito. The 13-track, 40-minute funk-jazz-rock album is available for free download as full quality 320kbps-MP3s, including dust jacket images designed by Locomalito.



    Following Final Fantasy XIII, Hamauzu bound for Paris

    The latest installment of GameSetWatch column Sound Current is an interview with two of the musicians responsible for the Final Fantasy XIII score. Composer Masashi Hamauzu and vocalist Mina are currently recording an original album called IMERUAT through their studio Monomusik. Several music tracks by Hamauzu are also planned for Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection and Half Minute Hero 2. The musicians' sold-out Paris concert organized by Wayô Records will take place May 22.


    In the Key of G87: Hydorah Arranged Tracks Q&A

    IndieGames.com catches up with Spanish game composer Gryzor87. This week the musician's original soundtrack for the freeware PC game Viriax and the 14-track Hydorah arranged album have become available for free download.     High Frequency Bandwidth Q&A on PixelJunk Shooter 1 & 2

Earlier this week the music group released HFB: PixelJunked - The Original Soundtrack To Shooter 1 & 2, which includes six tracks from PixelJunk Shooter and an additional six from PixelJunk Shooter 2. The Playstation 3 exclusives, available for download via the Playstation Network, are by independent Kyoto-based developer Q-Games.

    Game composers express hope for Japan's swift recovery

    IndieGames.com has posted links to several fundraising efforts and shows of support for victims of the Fukushima earthquake. Composers of independent games who have written and performed music as a show of sympathy for those struggling through the recent hardships in Japan include Laura Shigihara (Melolune), Baiyon (PixelJunk Lifelike), I Am Robot and Proud (forthcoming Queasy Games project), Stemage (Alpha Squad), Virt (Retro City Rampage) and Crashfaster (Knifetank).

    Amnesia receives Audio Award at 2011 Independent Games Festival

    Amnesia: The Dark Descent has received the Excellence in Audio Award at the 2011 Independent Games Festival awards ceremony. Audio design for the first-person horror game is by Finnish composer Mikko Tarmia. His other games include Penumbra: Requiem by Frictional Games and Overgrowth by Wolfire Games.


    Bill Elm & Woody Jackson win GANG Rookie of the Year Award

    Red Dead Redemption composers Bill Elm and Woody Jackson have received this year's award for "Rookie of the Year" from the Game Audio Network Guild. Previous award recipients include Christopher Tin of Civilization IV and Wataru Hokoyama of Afrika. The open-world Western from Rockstar Game also received awards for audio, music and interactive score.


    Mattias Häggström Gerdt scores Cardboard Box Assembler

    Formerly known as Cubesome, Miguel Ángel Pérez Martinez and Fernando Ramallo have released their Flash-based 3D puzzle platformer Cardboard Box Assembler, featuring music by Mattias Häggström Gerdt. The composer was nominated for an Excellence in Audio award at this year's Independent Games Festival for his music for the upcoming platformer Cobalt by Oxeye Games. Judging by twitter posts, a soundtrack album for "Box" is currently in the works.


    TCTD organizes Chip In: Japan fundraiser

    Chipmusic news site TCTD has organized a fundraiser to provide relief to those facing hardships due to the Tohoku earthquake and tsunamis. The Chip In: Japan! compilation includes over 40 chiptune tracks by numerous artists. Proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross through the First Giving Service.


    Play for Japan benefit album scheduled for May release

    Akira Yamaoka has announced a benefit album titled Play for Japan, scheduled for release in May. The artists currently announced to be contributing music to the release are Akira Yamaoka (Shadows of the Damned, Silent Hill series), Woody Jackson (Red Dead Redemption), Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica, SOCOM 4, The Walking Dead), Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Luminous Arc, Xenoblade) and Nobuo Uematsu (Blue Dragon, Final Fantasy series, Lost Odyssey).


    Masashi Hamauzu Paris concert scheduled for May 22

    KujaFFman writing for the Final Fantasy World website reports that Wayô Records will be holding a live concert of game composer Masashi Hamauzu's works on May 22 in Paris, France. The musician announced the event through YouTube, though specifics regarding the venue and program have yet to be announced.

    Beyond Good and Evil HD soundtrack free to download

    To promote the release of Beyond Good and Evil HD on Xbox Live Arcade, Ubisoft has made the remastered musical score free to download as mp3s. The music can be accessed in the Bonus Content section of the official website along with several wallpapers. Music for the game is by Christophe Héral.


    Grasshopper uploads three Otomodachi songs

    Grasshopper Manufacture has released three songs for free download under the EP name "Otomodachi." The songs are intended to honor those affected by the recent Tohoku earthquake. "Otomodachi, as you wake" and "Otomodachi, before you sleep" are by Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka, while "Otomodachi, in the afternoon," is by Grasshopper's Tak Hiraoka.


    OC ReMix presents Pokémon: The Missingno Tracks

    The musicians at game arrangement communinity OverClocked ReMix have arranged music from over 600 different games, but their most requested series has been Pokémon. The game has just turned 15 years old and Pokémon Black/White is right around the corner, so the site has chosen the occasion to release the album, Pokémon: The Missingno Tracks! The 90-minute album is free to download from the OC ReMix website.


    Minecraft Volume Alpha soundtrack now on Bandcamp

    The official soundtrack for the multi-award winning indie block game Minecraft is now on Bandcamp. The soundtrack album features fifteen additional exclusive minutes of content you've never heard before. The soundtrack is composed by C418, the German freelance musician Daniel Rosenfeld.


    33Triobelisk soundtrack now on Bandcamp

    Record label Swedish Columbia has made the soundtrack album for Japan-only iPad shooter 33Triobelisk available to stream for free in its entirety through Bandcamp. The game is by indie game creator Erik Svedäng of the award-winning Blueberry Garden and the iOS ambient title Kometen. Music for the 8 track album is by Triobelisk.


    Doctor Octoroc releases Shamroctoroc 8-bit Irish songs

    Chiptune musician Doctor Octoroc has launched a collection of tracks inspired by Irish folk and drinking songs. Shamroctoroc is in the style of 8-bit videogame music, primarily Nintendo Entertainment System tunes. The musician's previous releases include the holiday album 8-Bit Jesus and TV theme compilation After These Messages.


    Daniel Pemberton releases Little BIG Music Extra

    The Daniel Pemberton TV Orchestra has released a follow-up EP of music from Media Molecule's user-generated content game for Playstation 3, LittleBigPlanet. Little BIG Music Extra: More LittleBIGPlanet 2 Musical Oddities includes three tracks and is currently available through iTunes for $3.


    Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy soundtrack now on iTunes

    Square Enix has released the soundtrack album to Playstation Portable brawler Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy through iTunes. The 27-track album includes original music by Takeharu Ishimoto along with arrangements of music written by Nobuo Uematsu for the Final Fantasy series of role-playing games. The album can be downloaded for $16.


    Hironobu Sakaguchi writes song for quake victims
    Mistwalker chief Hironobu Sakaguchi wrote a song to encourage earthquake victims in Japan to "Keep strong." The song features vocals by a female employee of the game development studio, while the director of Wii RPG The Last Story writes on his blog, "What I can make is a humble contribution but I hope I can help to encourage someone and make difference."

The ambient comet game is a collaboration with Erik Svedäng of IGF award winner Blueberry Garden and includes music published in the album "To Stop You Must Die."     The evolving storyline of Indie Game: The Movie

    IndieGames.com caught up with BlinkWorks, makers of the upcoming documentary Indie Game: The Movie. The film will tell the development stories of Phil Fish of Fez, together with Tommy Refenes and Edmund McMillen of Super Meat Boy.
