During these times, Jay-Z and NaS were taking shots at each other on records. Jay wanted Nas to be on the chorus to Dead Presidents since 1995.
Analyze This (1999) Nas ft. Jay-Z & Lord Tariq
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHEcd80ZxvM
If you ask someone about the Black Republican Nas / Jay-Z track, they might tell you that's not really the first collaboration between the two rappers; next, they would point to something called Analyze This. However, what they're referring to is actually a blend. The story goes that NBA center Shaquille O'Neal was assembling material for his 1996 release Can't Stop The Reign. He then brought in the Trackmasters who eventually enlisted their comrade Nas to lay down some vocals. Nas obliged, spit an Esco-inspired verse but then ran into some issues. Either there were money holdups or personality disagreements, whatever, but he soon dropped out, and Jay-Z, coming off the release of Reasonable Doubt, was brought in as a replacement. Subsequently, it was only years later, with Shaq completely edited out but Lord Tariq, also on the original, still there, that Nas and Jay-Z's raps were paired together.
On Nastradamus, Nas said: "you wanna ball til you fall I can help you with that…make a slug melt right through your hat," which Jay took offense because it used a Memphis Bleek line. Since Nastradaums only went platinum and Nas was in his "Thug Life" phase, Jay decided to strike. After Jay released Takeover, Nas did a freestyle called "Stillmatic" and later released Stillmatic, the album.

After Stillmatic, there were still disses between Jay and Nas on albums subsequent such as God's Son and even Street's Disciple, not to mention freestyle tracks. Nas and Jay were featured on the same Scarface album, The Fix (2002), but were on different tracks:
Jay was on Guess Who's Back and Nas was on In Between Us

Nas released God's Son because his mother was suffering from cancer at the time and Nas turned to religion for help by releasing motivating and positive songs on the album. It was also Nas' mother who influenced Nas to reply to Jay-Z's Takeover and then mend ties with his father (who left Nas when he was a child) on the track "bridging the gap."
