Hello! This is going to hold me over until the new Hypno5e album comes out. I think you'll love it - I was really surprised you weren't already listening, since I always see your name as a listener of bands like this. The drummer is gonna be legendary. Found these guys recently and really dig their sound: http://kermit-band.bandcamp.com/ Trippy, psychedelic, space-y, jazz-infused instrumental post-rock...Think of Tortoise mixed with maybe Dark Side-era Pink Floyd with saxophone and a bit of spoken word. Pretty cool!

Hey I started a new group for music fanatics, the focus is going to be different than the ExMF and the frosty paradigm. It's a bit of an experiment but if a bunch of people get in it could be cool. Join if you are interested. I want this group to become a center for music discussion on Lastfm (even though it's metal centered, other genres are more than welcome to be discussed.) Cheers! Your esteemed knowledge on music would be appreciated by many I would assume ;) http://www.last.fm/group/Unholy+Cult+of+the+Appraised+and+Damned

  • tricksterc

Cheers dude, thanks for the help w/AGATG. They'll be on my short list. I do recommend Flies, pretty sweet and much better than SoR, imo. Nice to see Palm over on your sidebar. My Darkest Friend kills it. You're right, leave it to the Japanese to take an over saturated genre and inject life into it. Their S/T is damn good as well. New Sepultura huh? I kinda gave up after Against, I think it was. The first w/o Max. I believe I have Roorback somewhere but those are the only 2 sans MC. Glad to see you keeping the faith ; ) I would support a full on classic era lineup reunion. But as the years pass it seems less and less likely. Shame, you would be hard pressed to find a metal band that could touch Sepultura in the early to mid 90's, especially live. Good ole days and all that. Later.

Not sure if you've gotten a chance to listen to Enabler's Flies EP. I was a little underwhelmed by Shift of Redemption but Flies brings the heavy. Caustic stuff that would fit very nicely on All Hail the Void. And a killer cover of Sep's "Arise" as well. Def worth a looksee if you haven't. If you can rec a good place to start with Arsonists Get All the Girls, I'd appreciate it. Meant to check them out a long time ago and was impressed with the tracks I heard off their latest. Hasta.

There's checks and balances man. You have a family, so you know. The New York area is great for certain things. Music obviously and entertainment in general. But the cost of living is astronomical. A tiny studio apt in North Jersey is probably triple what it would cost out by you. And just travelling into the city is expensive in itself. Traffic, what? It is what it is. Portland has a great music scene, so I've heard. There certainly are some good bands coming out of the greater Portland area. I'm sure you would of had more access to gigs had you moved. And for what it's worth the Pacific NW has a beauty all it's own. Nothing even close to that in the suburban sprawl of the Tri-State area. Hope everything works out well for you and your family. I'm sure Mutoid Man will latch on to some larger tours next year that will bring them out west. Cheers!

Now that I think of it, I'm not 100% on Lost in the Air. Could of sworn they played something off Antenna... I think there might be a link on Brooklyn Vegan to Brodsky's FB page. Setlist is posted I believe.

  • tricksterc

Mutoid Man were/was (?) amazing in Brooklyn the other night dude. They played the entire album (obviously), and I was hoping for maybe a cover or two. The busted out Big Riff, Lost in the Air, Flypaper!, and Effigy!!!!, amongst others. Interplay between Brodsky and Koller was great. Fun night altogether, really hoping Helium Head isn't a one and done, MM is too good. Cheers my friend.

Tim yeah man I slept on Mutoid Man too long after reading the review over at thePRP.com...I always check their reviews and through random and few and far between, I usually align with their ratings. Mutoid Man is really good, I thought I'd thrown them your way as that release came out a few months ago. Keep the good rec's coming man - look forward to your Best of list this year - it's been a STOUT year and I have more than a few in my mind! Cheers

See Nix42 gave you a link to Windhand. Soma blew me away. I'm partial to some female fronted doom ala Subrosa, so that one was right up my alley. Their S/T is pretty killer as well. Cheers!

Absolute brilliance from Brodsky, Koller, and co. You know how I feel about Ben Koller, lol. Found out the store by me has a copy in stock. Gonna try and go swoop it up this week. Many thanks man. Few other random EOTY stuff that I'm trying to track down as well. Anacondas, Vaura, Sand Rider, Steak, Lumbar, Czar, Fister. They were releases that flew under my radar. Not sure if you've heard of them. After scouring blogs, the samples I listened too have got me scrambling to track 'em down. Been a kinda quiet end to the year since the East of the Wall, Russian Circles, Melvins, flurry. Mutoid Man sounds great though...great cap to a strong year in music imho. Anything else you stumble across, don't hesitate to holler. Later man.

Hey man, thanks for the heads up, can't wait to hear that one, i'll keep an eye out for it! There's been a lot of great albums this year, i think my favourite was probably the new QOTSA album, but aside from that i really loved Baptists... pretty sure you did too, thanks for the heads up on that one. All Pigs Must Die & Intronaut's were up there in my top 5 i'd say. Most disappointing was Kylesa.

Whats up Tim, I saw Norma Jean last night in SF - really fun show though the audience turnout was weak. KEN Mode was sick too! I drank some brews with Cory and Chris from NJ afterwards and scored a signed poster. Also random, George Clarke from Deafheaven was there and chatted with him too. All around a pretty epic night! You should consider a trip down to the Bay for a show sometime

Yes on new Russian Circles, and on new East of the Wall. Seriously both albums are so friggin good. Stoked to hear great new stuff so late in the year...Here's another: http://windhandva.bandcamp.com/ A buddy had them open and turned me onto them. Not usually into female singers but this is damn good!! Let me know your thoughts

  • Nix42

Hey man! A few things for you - finally got around to the new Norma Jean, it's damn good like you mentioned. Also really really like "Forever Becoming" - maybe Pelican's best work yet IMO and that's saying a lot. Also saw that you stumbled upon the Chicago outfit "Scientist" with former members of Yakuza - pretty cool listen! Here's a couple you may want to check out too: http://boatrocker.bandcamp.com/ - "Boatrocker" found 'em on Elementary Revolt blog (they were a band submission) and really really dig their sound! Early emo-ish in some parts, then more melodic post-hardcore in others.Check 'em out, super fun listen. Also these Canucks - http://prettymouth.bandcamp.com/ "Pretty Mouth" are definitely pissed. Sounds like Canada or Hell Songs-era Daughters from the little I heard on their bandcamp. It's intriguing enough to want to shell out the $5 to get the whole release. Let me know what you think! Cheers

I was trying to think which RS album Memorial eclipsed possibly, in terms of heaviness. Station is a good call. The tones on this album are great, as well as the drumming. Feel like Russian Circles almost reinvented themselves. I was looking forward to a new album, just didn't expect it to rule so hard. Gonna have to revisit The Apologist as well. I just think some of the riffs and licks on Redaction are 'nother level type stuff. East of the Wall, representing Jersey! Good times.

    Ottobre 2013
  • tricksterc

New East of the Wall is amazing man. Just picked it up, along with Memorial, among other things. I think Redaction Artifacts tops The Apologist. And Russian Circles has me speechless. Cranked that on the way back up the Garden State Parkway...soooo good. Kills Empros imho. Two great albums as the year starts to wind down.

Rwake I enjoy...when I remember to live them a listen. They're one of those bands that gets lost in the shuffle a bit. I know they are a big part of the Southern sludge scene. Really dug there first album and Rest the last one. Voice of Omens has it's moments too. And like ASOL where you're concerned, I have all their albums but they don't seem to have the staying power I think they should. Strange. Might check out Nation to Flames. Thanks for the heads up man.

Bombard away my friend. You've put me onto quite a few great bands that I might not have found other wise. Many thanks dude. Question about A Storm of Light. Their pedigree seems to suggest that they should sound more compelling than they do, at least to me that is. I've got 3 full lengths I think and had their newest in my hand the other day, but passed on it. I see you've spun them quite a bit...wondered if you had an opinion on Nations To Flames. Cheers again for the recs man, srsly appreciate 'em. Peace.

Grand Blood is growing on me. Darkness Comes Alive it is not, but a few songs are worming there way into my head. Whales and Leeches is better than I first thought, not sure if it tops Murder the Mountains but it's all win. Dawn Rising, the track with Mike from YOB is off the chain. Album art is also possibly the best I've seen in 2013. That Erosion album is killer, saw your shout on their page. Need to get the album art up. And, I was never a fan of Norma Jean but new album is getting so much love, it's getting me interested. For one reason or another I ignored NJ when they were at their peak. Maybe it was to my detriment.

Gotta admit, I'm old school to the bone for the most part. I've downloaded a lot of stuff from ITunes. I'd rather pay now than use torrents that have crashed 2 hard drives. Otherwise, I try to buy physical media when possible. CD still and some vinyl. Mostly splits, and 7's. But stuff like Rosetta, was only available in mp3 format. And bands like Light Bearer and Terra Tenabrosa aren't readily available and 40-50 bucks for imports ain't worth it to me. Glad you're digging Pelican. For me their last great album was The Fire in Our Throats... I found the last two a bit redundant. Red Fang, I'm expecting big things from. They are one of my favorite bands to come out in the last few years. I did hear mixed things about Doomriders. Loved the first two albums as different as they were...so we'll see. Cheers dude.

How's the new Pelican, from your POV. I only listened to a couple tracks @ Pitchfork. Don't like streaming whole albums I'm really anticipating. Takes some of the sheen off of the purchase for me. I'm checking my local indie store (which rocks and puts out stuff early) to see when their new shipment is in for the 10/15 releases. Pelican, Red Fang, Doomriders etc. so I can whip over there after work and spend a bunch of money I don't have. First impressions are it's heavier and more dynamic than the last two. Cheers!

Howdy sir, not much on my radar unfortunately. Work and "life" have been eating me recently. I recently streamed the new Pelican album "Forever Becoming" via pitchfork and it's pretty beastly. Track 5, Threnody was a standout: http://pitchfork.com/advance/246-forever-becoming/ I also streamed the new Touche Amore "Is Survived By" (if that's your style) - it's pretty good if not a bit more accessible than their previous. I found the new Jesu album but haven't go around to listening to it yet. Justin Broderick is another hit-and-miss for me, Silver probably being my favorite.

Don't know if you've heard about Allen Blickle's newish project Alpaca. And their debut album ( I believe)...which just came out. It sure ain't Baroness. But knowing Allen's style as a drummer you can see how he got here. I like it, no joke. http://www.metalsucks.net/2013/10/02/ex-baroness-drummer-allen-blickle-makes-dance-music-now/

That you hitting the skins up top? You're looking kinda introspective, a post-rock project maybe? Jk ; ) Speaking of did you catch the Katatonia/Cult of Luna/Intronaut tour? NYC date was amazing. And I almost didn't go cause I had Carcass the next day. Great night, not surprisingly Intronaut held there own. I thought they'd get lost in the shuffle but they were heavier than I've heard them in years. Later man!

Me too dude! I hit your page up quite a bit...find out where the good shit is. The new Old Gods album is crushing as is Damascus, see we both found that. Phantom Glue as well. Light Bearer is starting to click, I got Lapsus as well. But Rosetta, idk man. I wanna love that album. I've been a fan if theirs from the jump off but it's not resonating with me...nearly as strongly as I'd hoped. Oct. has some good stuff dropping; Jesu, Red Fang, Doomriders, 65daysofstatic, Russian Circles, I'm forgetting some. Hope all's good with you. Let me know if anything suitably obscure and righteous crosses your path. The Armed/Nice Hooves combo still gets cranked. Cheers!

I saw Between the Buried and Me again on Monday night w/ The Safety Fire, Contortionist and The Faceless open. Such a rad show, Between the Buried and Me are just flawless live and they killed the entire Parallax II album front to back and closed with White Walls. Are you able to catch them in Portland on this tour? What else you been jammin' lately? Cheers

Hey yeah I have a list i'm working on http://rateyourmusic.com/list/xVictimOfADownx/favorites_of_2013__a_work_in_progress_/2/ nothing set in stone though and just been adding to it as the year progresses. Favorite releases are typically always progressive deathcore/death metal releases that change the game (e.g. Gorguts, Ulcerate, The Schoenberg Automaton, Aristeia etc.) Main ones I can see you digging might be the new The Schoenberg Automaton (mathcore/progressive metal/deathcore), Melt-Banana (noise rock), Illogo (mathcore/avant-garde), Grenades (hardcore), Jackals (mathcore/doom), Chon (math rock), Slugdge (progressive/sludge), Nihilosaur (progressive/sludge), In The Company Of Men (mathcore), The Rein Of Kindo (prog/jazz rock), Oathbreaker (hardcore), Hybrid (mathcore/progressive), Spirale (experimental rock/metal), Dreamdecay (noise rock/postpunk), Entropia (post metal) Ether (doom/sludge) from what I can see that I don't think you have checked out yet (maybe lol.)
