I noticed the new avatar... thought you might have left the site. Glad you haven't... I have hope that all the remaining former features will return.

Have you heard the new Buffy album "Power in the Blood?" It's surprising me with an almost techno feel to it at times... sounds good on first listen.

I think I remember hearing something about that, yeah. Wasn't really too interested in going for many reasons...

Yes there is a short collective memory but I think more than anything it's a matter of desensitization... Abu Ghraib? We all still know about that one... a scandal and then nothing... we all still know there was no WMD... and really the only fall guy of note I can think of is Colin Powell - the MIC are still heroes, the Navy is still a "global force for Good" and an admission of American guilt is considered wild-eyed raving. I can recall the GOP admonishing Obama to "stop apologizing" for the USA. Anyway, I love Judy Henske's self-titled live album... a lot of fun.

Thought I'd shout... I think you have it right with the "sterile sounding" comment though that's one of the things that attracts me to the band. I actually had the same first impression and what brought me around was reading the lyrics as the song played. It wasn't the lyrical content so much as the way in which the words are sung. I can't describe it... but I've never heard singing like this. btw I'm currently reading Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,,, I've had a hardcover version of it for years and finally after running across mention of the book with another last fm-er I decided to read it. I don't know why but I expected it to be dull... quite the opposite so far.

Interesting! I'm not good with anniversaries of even a personal nature, but letsee... it was just over 11 years ago that the USA spearheaded Operation Iraqi Liberation in order to remove the yoke of oppression from the oil fields there.

Have you seen An Inconvenient Truth? There's a bit in it where it shows a cartoon of a frog in water that's gradually heated and it won't jump out so long as the temperature doesn't drastically increase at any point in time. That's how I see society as a whole... so really I think the best hope we have is for the worst, most autocratic, fascist, you name it... politicians to be elected. It's like in Wisconsin when the Republicans wiped out the unions... it takes overreach to have any kind of response. The bank bailouts and Occupy... things like that. So yeah I think we're pretty much looking at it from a similar point of view. But hey I don't want to live through times as rough as it will take to bring about real change. OTOH I see how futile it is with the societal water temperature gradually (pointedly) increasing with the Dems and Reps. So like I said, I see things as getting worse. I;m reminded now of a Police song - when the world is running down you make the best of what's still

I'm going to say that things are getting worse. I agree with your comments about how in some aspects improvements have been made - and I am glad for them - but more and more I am thinking there is only one division of importance, and this, as I see it, is where things are getting decidedly worse, and that's economic status. All kinds of oppression are solved if you have power, and that with money - and full-time jobs are becoming part-time ones, and have been following this trend since... oh I'll just blame Reagan... I have to upgrade my cable modem for my internet access, and I'm supposed to do it myself because the cable company got rid of their service employees who used to do it (if I'm offline here for a length of time in a little while that's why btw) and so on... workers have become accustomed to not having fulltime jobs and that's going to be the death of everything. At least that's how I see it.

I have a question for you. Should you choose to answer we'll follow the Johnny Cash format in that after that answer I'll give mine. Ok then, this question is intentionally vague - do you think things are getting better?

I thought there might be a holiday greeting for War Day! Actually, dropping by to check out the avatar - couldn't quite make it out in the smaller version on my page. It looks suitably energetic, determined and optimistic to me.

It's an odd album. I like it. Cash was inspired during its making (even if wrongly so) and thus I consider it comparable to the prison recordings he would later make. I'm currently reading The Grapes of Wrath and it's occurred to me that it the book had been written in recent years its author would be raked over the coals for being un-American and so on... and I think the same applies to Bitter Tears. I do wonder what the reaction at the time of its release was.

An example of culture here being say Black Friday! It was always the heaviest shopping day of the year but it wasn';t built up and marketed as it is now. This, in miniature, is what I think of as a society's culture. But again, it's not really to argue with your use of the term.

I think you're right about our difference being mostly semantic, and I did vagueky, intuitively, grasp the meaning of your use of culture. It's not one I trruly disagree with since I find out now that I have only a fuzzy notion of what cultue actually is - looking it up online I did find my idea of it "5. the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group: the youth culture; the drug culture." ~ behaviors and beliefs ~ though obviously with the leading 5 it's not the definitive answer! Anyway, I do think you're right to contrast the positive and negative aspects.

Aha. I've been thinking about that recently... respect in general. I do respect all cultures, and most individuals, in that I don't intentionally dis-respect them. But really, I think all cultures are terrible in that they're built on domination and exploitation. And some have to be worse than others, too... but since it's unrealistic to expect a large percentage of any culture to rise above what is considered the norm (thinking now, for example, Thomas Jefferson and slavery) I try to mute my criticism. Still, 'No Thanks, No Giving' conveys my feeling quite well... different approaches are fine. So, 'for every culture, against every nation' doesn't reflect my view, but I think you see where I'm coming from on this.

Interesting. It makes sense to me since it is easier to grow food rather than catch it... and far more reliable a method as well! I'm not sure if I'm reading something into it that isn't there but it seems to me you're thinking I am an American Indian - I'm not. WASP all the way, though not so much Protestant anymore... speaking of Indian society, something I read (can't say I can vouch for its accuracy) is that for the most part they are an example of anarchism in action in that the chiefs were ceremonial positions and decisions were arrived at through consensus... I don't know if this just applies to the men... anyway it is an interesting model to build on for a way of life. I would like to look more into it, but something always comes up. Maybe some day!

Thank you so much for your lovely words, my friend. Your interest and moral support was allways important for me!! Indead it took a lot of work to built this group and to create/collect all this 2600 Kurdish artist profiles at my personal library . I have done this tremendous work of countless hours mainly because two years ago, when I came here, I was almost frightened, that the Kurdish music (as opposed to so many others) was completely undiscovered and untapped at lastfm. That's all. - Was that really a reason to invest so many hours of my life? That's what I wonder about now, when the work is accomplished.

Hey Jack, it's been awhile... how are you? I recently heard someone I think you'd like and who isn't listed on your charts - Linda Perhacs. She has only one album, a trippy folky effort called Parallelograms. It most closely reminds me (to give a reference point) of Buffy's Illuminations, though not so rocking. Anyway, just checking in!

I'm glad you checked out some of Pura fe's music. I got the chance to speak with her at her last U.S. concert and she said she would be working with Buffy Sainte-Marie and Joy Harjo in the future...so I cant wait to hear what comes of that. They are all great..love Buffy! My only regret is that I didn't go to her show last year while I was in NYC! :(

I looked at a Richard Thompson "Pharaoh" clip on youtube and liked it. I also played Richard Thompson radio and liked the song it led off with "Beeswing" - I'll check out more of his music. btw, I kept Steeleye Span on my mp3 player and recently it played one of their tunes on shuffle and I enjoyed that too. So perhaps I'll get into them eventually... sometimes it works like that!
