  • Want to see live

    Giu 15 2009, 4:22

I always see journals of what people have seen live which I never quite understand, just post them in past events but anyway I'd like to see more wishlists, so here's mine :)

I have a lot of artists in my library, so I gave each artist three seconds and if I couldn't decide if i'd actually go see them if a tour was announced I didn't include them.

If you were to announce a tour RIGHT NOW, I would buy a ticket:
    Paramore
blink-182 They will announce some Aussie dates soon to add to their World Tour, yesyesyes. First time seeing them.
    Yellowcard
    Jack's Mannequin
    Say Anything
    Motion City Soundtrack
Tegan and Sara Probably the most established live act I've seen, go see them even if you're only into a couple of songs.
    The Ataris
Brand New I listen to this band a lot more than I realise.
Bayside So many effing chances to see these guys, I don't think I ever will haha
    Brighten
My American Heart Brilliant to see as day was turning to night at Soundwave. A chill in the air and a perfect singalong :)
Mayday Parade Were really good when I saw them with Paramore, come back please :)

    Meg & Dia
    The Maine
    The Spill Canvas
Patent Pending Not just for "Cheer Up Emo Kid", the rest is good too :)
    I Am the Avalanche
Forever the Sickest Kids Saw them recently at Soundwave, total fun even the Men In Black cover that no one really knew.
    All Get Out
    The Morning Light
    Ellington
    Operator Please
    Anthony Green
    Lydia
The Scene Aesthetic Beauty In The Breakdown would be brilliant to see live even if I've stopped listening to it *runs to listen to*
    TV/TV
    Right Away, Great Captain!
    Automatic Loveletter
    nevershoutnever!
    The Honorary Title
Taylor Swift Got into her songs just as she was touring here, next time for me :)
    The Gaslight Anthem
    The Secret Handshake
    Owl City
    Isles & Glaciers
    Backseat Goodbye
    Craig Owens
    Lights
    A Rocket to the Moon
    The Devil and The Lion
    The Narrative
    The Dangerous Summer
Pencey Prep Purely to see Frank do his thing :)

If you've seen a certain act, do share your experiences :)

  • <RECs go here>

    Apr 12 2009, 7:22

Do you think my taste in music is stellar, and wanna rec. a similar band/artist to me?
Maybe you think my charts blow, and wanna enlighten my musical taste?

Or are you just a self-righteous loser who doesn't really care, and thinks everybody should listen to only what you listen to because you're just so effing awesome?

Well, right on. Recommendations are always welcome. For starters,
    GUIDELINES:

    1. I'll give pretty much any genre a go, but I know I don't like Screamo, Metal, Hardcore stuff.

    2. When you give a rec., make sure to give a brief description about the band/artist.
(i.e., why do you like them? what makes them appealing to you?)

    3. Make sure to include an album for me to start with or maybe a favorite song or two.

Of course, THANK YOU FOR YOUR RECS, GUISE.

I never really understood why people make journals and simply list the artists they've seen when they could just as easily use the events. So I'm going to do what they do but with reviews and a "looking back at it now opinion".

    Soundwave 2008
    + Incubus
I caught one song of this band via direction of a friend. We were standing in the stalls a 100 feet from the stage, they didn't even look like dots something more minute would be correct. The song was Drive and brought on many great memories of listening to 90s songs in the car, was really good to see it live.
    + The Offspring
I seen a little bit of them on my way to seeing The Matches, lately i'm kind've sad i missed them and it doesn't help that my neighbour plays their album from start to finish at full blast once a week.
    +Plain White T's
I didn't see them at Soundwave, as Mysapce held a secret show the night before in a laneway. Was pretty damn cool.
    + Sugarcult
Disappointment. Old dudes bagging out emo.
    + Motion City Soundtrack
One of the best of the day, really happy i seen them but missed kevin devine for them :/ I loved how their fans knew every word to every song, didn't realise they were that big here. Will definately see them next time they're here.
    + Mae
Unfortunately I was really tired by the time I seen this band and they just sounded like noise to me OR the sound department was falling in this room.
    + Mindless Self Indulgence
    ...
    + Boys Like Girls
Disappointment. I watched a song and a half of theirs and then walked away.
    + Cartel
were a weird one. I didn't spend my time jumping around to their awesome tunes, from what i can recall their wasn't much of a crowd and i spent the time wondering why a group of hardcore looking guys would have a blonde guy who looked like he belonged with backstreet boys as their lead singer.
    + All Time Low
Soundwave totally underestimated the size of crowd they'd pull. There wasn't enough room for everyone, so people were piling up on the side. I really didn't like their childish jokes and they're "I'm So Cool" attitude, I hope all the bands I assimilate with them aren't the same live.
    + mewithoutYou
Weird Shiz, Obviously I'm not cool enough to appreciate this stuff as some kidults were really digging this.
    + City and Colour
His glasses and grandpa attitude just weirded me out, i'd heard so many amazing things about this dude and to see him up their on that stage just being mediocre was a disappointment. I wasn't really into him before but just gave him a chance live anyway, fail.
    + My American Heart
Seeing them live really made me like them a whole lot more. I had a really great time in the twilight, front row moshing with some kids to their great songs. And the band being really stoked that we knew their lyrics :) Pulled an okay size crowd, come back soon plz.
    + The Matches
Okay brilliant, if i found a video of this performance i could probably pin point the moment i fell in love. I knew a few songs before but seeing them live was like WOAH and my love just grew so quickly. By the time they came back, which wasn't long at all i was a huge fan.
    +Madina Lake
I took a chance on seeing them, didn't like what I saw. Heard some pretty crap rumours about the band-members beforehand which didn't help with my opinion of them. They did get the crowd going, very well and from what I can tell supplied them with a blow up beachball and lots of floating stuff.
    + Kevin Devine
I was so in love with his tunes when he came out here, you have no idea how disappointed i was to miss him live. I even went to his sideshow, but that didn't work out either :(((((((
    + As Tall As Lions
I don't like you, stop appearing at shows I go to. lol. I had to sitstand through a performance of theirs to see unwritten law and +44. Can't remember who I was waiting to see at Soundwave, but I ended up seeing them again.
    + Socratic
This band is too cute for words. It was early in the day and didn't really get the crowd going, but i enjoyed seeing them.
    +Envy on the Coast
Another product of the "bad sound quality" room. I waited their whole set in the hot room to see Temper Temper, and unless I totally zoned out they didn't play it. Really confused me, as I thought this was their best tune and infact the only one I really liked it. I wanted to wait around and question them on this, but had to run off to another stage.
    + Jim Ward
It was getting late afternoon and I was tired, so I sat with my back leant against his stage. Was nice to chill to his tunes, nothing I would check out properly. I started something with this too, some kids copied my sitting attitude. lol
Overall: See how good Soundwave is for me, I get to form proper opinions on these bands I see and hear. I also get alot of catching up on music, enough for the whole year infact. I didn't see much else that year.

  • Worth A Listen...

    Ott 29 2008, 4:36

Gyroscope. Australia keeps hidden a fair few great acts from the world and this is one of them. They have ALOT of songs and pretty much all of them are great. Most fans of Kisschasy are into them, but I'd recommend any rock fan take a listen.

Ellington. I'll try not to only talk about only Australian artists but there are just so many that deserve to be known. Ellington are a great two-person acoustic act, I hear they are branching out to a full band soon, should be good. Take a listen if you like Lydia, Dashboard Confessional or The Scene Aesthetic. They are using the online world to their benefit which got them on the homepage of purevolume. They have already recorded in america with some great names (Relient K, Say Anything, Lydia), I hope they do a really long tour over there :)

TV/TV are a really great power pop act, if you're sick of the throw away pop acts then give these guys a listen. Really fun stuff.

More Amor is Tom Oakes, ex-guitarist and songwriter for The Higher and Kyle Lobeck, former youinseries frontman. It's really cute, powerpop stuff. I Iike it!

Jaguar Love are a really new find for me, simply from the Soundwave line-up. I really liked that this year will bring 10 completely new artists for me. These guys have a crazy sound, I really really like it. Think The Matches at their highest wave of madness.

    One Track Listen
    Biffy Clyro: Mountains
Empire Of The Sun: Walking on a Dream
Angus & Julia Stone: Just a Boy
Iglu & Hartly: In This City
Against Me!: Borne on the FM Waves of the Heart (Tegan Quin's collaboration)

I really wish you could sort your library by world plays or listeners, it would make this so much easier. Sometimes an act seems so familiar to you that you have no idea what size there fanbase is.
