Sun 19 Oct – Gazpacho, A Day's Work
The Norwegian guys of Gazpacho seem to find the right pace of touring. The wait after seeing them live at the Marillion Weekend 2007 was a bit too long, but now we could enjoy their music in the Netherlands only 3 months after their little gig in Zoetermeer. And Jan has promised us to come back next spring. Keep this touring frequency up guys!
The afternoon (!) in the cosy W2 venue (a former cigar factory) was all about hearing new material mixed with golden oldies. Dutch A Day's Work, also Marillion Weekend veterans, opened with some great new songs and material from their first album.
Los Gazpachos started with playing the first three tracks of Night. During the 'Night' performance, the sound was crystal clear, revealing new depths of this tremendous album. Especially the musical encore at the end of Dream of Stone was great.
The show continued with Vulture and Substitute for Murder and Snowman. Then it was time for about thirty minutes of new material, Tick-Tock. Gazpacho also played this during the gig in Zoetermeer last July, but if I am not mistaken, new bits have been added. Anyhow, this piece -or rather pieces- of music contains so much layers that one can listen to it over and over and still discover musical terra incognita.
Tick-Tock covers the range from the unknown icy depths of the Norwegian fjords up to the snow-white mountains towering over these waters. And everything in between. Especially a part with a Russian Orthodox choir, or something like that (might be Tibetan Monks), is absolutely thrilling. Enough reason to look forward to the new album which promises to equal Night!
After a short break, Gazpacho played Bravo as an encore, ending with a rather folky and merry tune. All in all an afternoon that made my heart go tick-tock…….
