Marbles in the snow

Wed 12 Dec – Snow-where Else Tour 2007
Since Marillion didn’t change the set list very much during the Snowhere Else Tour, I expected to hear the same songs on the second gig in Paradiso Amsterdam. But hey, who cares with such a beautiful line up of Marillion songs as we heard the day before?

After the once again marvelous opening sequence of Brave (despite a very loud sound initially, especially a resonating bass), smoothly transferring into Fruit of the Wild Rose, I expected Out of this World. Instead, the first chords of Fantastic Place filled the vibrant venue.

Maybe it was due to the place where I stood in the crowd, but both the band and the audience seemed even more warmed up than the evening before. Steve Rothery proofed also to be good at a kind of classic bluesy guitar playing in Fruit of the Wild Rose. As the evening went along however, he made some rare little mistakes. Though this caused highly funny faces from both Rothers and Mark Kelly, so it didn’t matter anyway.

Again, Marillion played a new song, Real Tears For Sale. After the second listening, my judgement is that it is a nice song, yet very ‘songish’. It does not take you away on a journey, which Somewhere Else, once again, did.

The vibe in Paradiso grew and grew, and at Seasons End, H just quit singing and let the audience do all the work.

The second surprise of the evening was Ocean Cloud, the thrilling musical epic. With Neverland and The Invisible Man following that song, we had our fair share of Marbles. And some of the most beautiful marbles at that.

Then the cooling snow came. With Mark Kelly as a huge inflated Santa. He didn’t stop making jokes and exploring the possibilities of an inflated Santa suit behind H’s back. This confused H, since the attention of the crowd was focused on Mark Kelly, while H not aware of what was happening behind him, continued trying to be funny in a non-inflated Santa suit.

I go to Marillion gigs since 1990, and I kind of lost count -7 in 2007, that’s for sure-, yet the boys seem to get better and better. The energy, artistic quality and sheer fun they show at their gigs, are rarely seen and heard. I’m happy and proud to be part of that worldwide family.
