  • Albums In The Year Of The Oil Spill

    Dic 10 2010, 6:49

So I haven't been in my game at all this year, but I guess I should listen to as much 2010 stuff as possible? Here's stuff I heard and albums I have on the iPod and would like to hear soon, updated on a near-daily basis:

    Done:

Kanye West--My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. It's okay. I think "Power" is his weakest lead-in single ever. The production is pretty wicked and varied and might actually be his most consistent set of beats ever, and I always saw him as a top-shelf producer first and a subpar rapper second anyway. "Monster" basically has a bunch of popular rappers sleepwalking and Nicki Minaj giving it mouth-to-mouth at the last minute and amazingly brings it back to life for the most part. The worst moment has to be Fergie's MIA impression in "All Of The Lights". What the fuck was that, dude.

Girl Talk--All Day. I think the Mash-up genre has run its course, and that bootleg live concert from Binghampton that came out in May was hell of a lot more fun than this, actually.

Ludachrist--Talk Is Cheap. Couldn't quite finish it in one sitting. There's enough inspired gayness to keep me going, though. EDIT: actually, this is kinda tremendous.

Geneva Jacuzzi--Lamaze. I got into Italo Disco a couple of years ago and she totally nails it with a dark, lo-fi twist. Pretty great.

Toro Y Moi--Causers Of This. At worst, nap music. At best, magnificent.

Rose Elinor Dougall--Without Why. Forgettable, but I will give it another shot. It ain't '06 Pipettes, I'll tell you that.

Curren$y--Pilot Talk. Production so dope I virtually ignored everything else about it.

Best Coast--Crazy For You. Impressively straightforward and fun. No complaints.

Sleigh Bells--Treats. Take out "Rill Rill" and this is straight-up whatever-status.

Flying Lotus--Cosmogramma. There seems to be a much greater IDM influence on this than his last effort, and it sounds awesome. Will listen again and again and again.

Lil B's Based Freestyles. FIRE, dude's the future.

    Janelle Monae--The Archandroid. ruled

Ghostface/Meth/Raekwon--Wu Massacre. Way Too $hort, I want more!

Aziz Ansari--Intimate Moments For A Sensual Evening. worth it just for the Harris and Kanye West stories.

She & Him--Volume Two. Between you and I, it's kind of a letdown.

Glass Candy--Feeling Without Touching. Title track is nothing short of magikal. The rest is good too but damn damn.

Surfer Blood--Astro Coast. The first three songs in particular grew on me over the last few months. Nothing boner-inducing, but definitely has its place.

Beach House--Teen Dream. I have yet to hear a Dream Pop album that's been less than great. This is among the best of the best, though I prefer Devotion.

Big Boi--Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. The best Hip-Hop album of the year by a fucking long shot.

    Robyn--Body Talk. I'm in love.

Earl Sweatshirt--EARL. In terms of the lyricism and incredible potential, reminds me a lot of early Eminem. His swag is phenomenal.

The National--High Violet. Some nice moments here and there, but otherwise this is pure ZZZZZZZZZZ and a tremendous step down from Boxer.

  • 10 things

    Ott 6 2008, 16:58

    1. They fixed my last.fm problem. I was v. worried.

    2. I really can't stop listening to that High Places compilation.

    3. I like Can a lot more than this chart thinks.

    4. I don't like The Mountain Goats as much as my chart says. Certainly not #1!

    5. Soulseek is slowly turning me into a musical brat. I'm always downloading like 7 albums at any given time. I've come to a point where there's always a billion things I want to investigate at all times. I need to slow down and actually savor every note.

    6. I have a soft, gay spot for Go Sailor. And more other Twee Pop for that matter. I remember early this year just devouring any and all twee I could. Lots of Beat Happening, Tiger Trap, Shop Assistants, cub, Tullycraft, Heavenly, Softies blahblahblah. I might listen to some of those again by the end of the year.

    7. As of now, my #1 album is We Are The Pipettes. That sounds about right.

    8. My top artists are packed in together in terms of play count. I don't even know if that's on purpose or what, but I do remember telling myself to lay off the Weezer because of this.

    9. Because of Degrassi I've only seen 5 movies so far this month. So much for 100 in October. If I was going by that pace I would have 18 by the end of today.

    10. I heard some of their new album, and Metallica STILL doesn't know how to rock.
