(Although they did kind of break up, the band is now the Isaac Brock and the Revolving Door, not Modest Mouse. Modest Mouse was an unbelievably cohesive power trio... one of the most perfect bands to ever exist. Thank God at least Jeremiah is still there.)

And I know that the whole band "Selling-out" or "They changed, so now they suck" thing is a cliche. But it is absolutely true in this case. More importantly though, is that I'm not so much sad or angry that they are different now: I'm more curious and frustrated that I can't understand this intangible aspect of their old music that very very few people can even feel in the first place. I'm not complaining at all. In fact, I'm glad that they are successful. Other bands have put out far less great material and then broke up into obscurity (like Slint). Modest Mouse put out FOUR perfect albums and a slew of other material and EPs, then broke into the mainstream instead of breaking up. Now they are successful. I'm happy for them, and I'm happy to see them play live shows (I've seen two, both of which blew me away.)

Thanks. I've ranted about MM before. They are my favorite band, after all. They really are an odd case. Other bands went through similar "sell-out" transformations (where there was a specific point where they changed, as opposed to a gradual change.) Death Cab for Cutie, for instance, went through a very similar thing. (Only difference is, their "transformation" album, Transatlanticism, lacks the substance of their older material, whereas The Moon & Antarctica still has plenty of substance, while still being very different from their older material.) Something about Modest Mouse makes them even more frustrating and enigmatic than any other band. I love Old Mouse beyond belief, more than possibly anything. New Mouse isn't even bad music, I would probably like them on the same level as like, the Shins or something, but... they are just another band now, you know? I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.
