  • My Rapidly Changing Library

    Mar 27 2011, 8:00

I'm at the point in my Library where I am accumulating so many artists and genres of music that its all quite eclectic when I come on to listen to my music. (Props to you pogopatterson for giving me some things to think about!) At first I wanted to keep my library pure and unless I preapproved it I didn't want it cluttering up my space. For around a year I kept it that way and I was happy enough with my intermal arrangement. In the past few months I have expanded my mind and thought about it so I'm constantly hearing new music. If I wanted to keep things pure I can listen to internet radio, media player or even specific last.fm's adio stations so I have options...

One minute I'm listening to Barry White, The isley Brothers, Redbone, Otis Redding and The O'Jays and the next I'm onto Nirvana, Johnny Cash, Robert Miles, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac etc...It's a different experience than growing up and listening to the radio where it was pretty much genre specific. I appreciated that style of music at the time since I was heavily into R&B and New Wave, Pop Music and Heavy Metal. In LA where I came up you could find any radio station to get your fix. It annoyed me that the DJ's talked over the music and never played the whole song without interruption and there were way too many commercials.

I can always block a song from going into my library or skip it to another time so its not like you are stuck if you hate a song or don't want to hear that style of music. I found Pandora's perameters quite limiting and the 40 hour time limit each month was a bit of a pain in the ass honestly. Granted I suppose I could have forked over the $36 a year but it wasn't worth it there I don't think within the limitations. It would be much more worth it here but I was considering that minus the shoutbox and listening to music there isn't much incentive to pay the nominal fee. Granted I'm all for paying artists who record their music and provide it to the public but if I'm motivated enough I'll download music or go old skool and pick up a CD, go to a concert etc...

Tonight just about every song is a new addition to my library and I'm opening up to having a huge variety in the library. I have just ripped a load of music to media player so if I want to get specific with genre I can do it there and pick and choose what I want to hear. Sometimes I'm still in my oldies or R&B mood so there are ways to deal with that though...
