The Epic Playlist

Mag 8 2008, 11:41

So, I was feeling bored one day, and I decided to create a CD. I had one 700 MB CD to fill up... So I decided to create a playlist entirely comprised of "epic" songs.

Personally, when I think epic, I think build-up, massive climax, progression throughout the song beyond the verse-chorus-verse-chorus etc structure.

So, the playlist ended up being 45 songs long, totaling a time of 8 hours and 23 minutes.

Here it is:
1. Dream Theater: In The Presence Of Enemies Pt. 1
2. Dream Theater: In The Presence Of Enemies Pt. 2
3. The Mars Volta: Viscera Eyes
4. Avenged Sevenfold: Strength of the World
5. Ayreon: Into the Black Hole (Flight of the Migrator version)
6. Behemoth: The Reign Ov Shemsu-Hor
7. Between The Buried & Me: Ants Of The Sky
8. Blind Guardian: And Then There Was Silence
9. Devin Townsend: Earth Day
10. Pain of Salvation: The Perfect Element
11. The Devin Townsend Band: Pixillate
12. Pain of Salvation: Idioglossia
13. Dream Theater: Finally Free
14. Opeth: A Fair Judgement
15. Draconian: Death, Come Near Me
16. Evergrey: Darkest Hour
17. In Mourning: The Black Lodge
18. The Living End: The Room
19. Tool: Eulogy
20. Machine Head: A Farewell to Arms
21. The Mars Volta: Cicatriz ESP
22. Meshuggah: I
23. X Japan: ART OF LIFE
24. Tool: 10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)
25. Muse: Knights of Cydonia
26. Nahemah: Subterranean Airports
27. Opeth: The Drapery Falls
28. Pain of Salvation: Dea Pecuniae
29. Between The Buried & Me: White Walls
30. Porcupine Tree: Anesthetize
31. Primordial: As Rome Burns
32. Scar Symmetry: The Kaleidoscopic God
33. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum: Angle of Repose
34. Strapping Young Lad: AAA
35. Symphony X: Revelation (divus Pennae Ex Tragoedia)
36. Devin Townsend: Solar Winds
37. Ayreon: The Sixth Extinction
38. Thursday: Autumn Leaves Revisited
39. Dream Theater: Octavarium
40. Devin Townsend: Color Your World
41. Tool: Pushit
42. Ayreon: Day Twelve: Trauma
43. Tool: Rosetta Stoned
44. Wintersun: Sadness and Hate
45. Pain of Salvation: A Trace Of Blood

So, how do you like it? Any glaring omissions? Some that aren’t really ‘epic’? What do you think is epic?

I wuold say my opinion of this playlist but I barely know three songs :P I pretty much agree with your opinion of epic. I would suggest you to try In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 by coheed and cambria (now it's free to listen), 'cause it's probably the most epic song I know (also, no world for tomorrow by them is pretty epic).

An epic song is bombastic and grand. The Mystic Prophecy Of The Demon Knight. Yeah.

I see you lack The Lotus Eater

The lack of Iron Maiden on this list makes me sad :( seriously when I think epic I think Iron Maiden. Liking the choices though still.

Yeah, I've never been the biggest fan of Iron Maiden... actually, I don't much like NWOBHM. I think it's a bit boring. @LexiFSAS: I've resolved to not listen to the leaked album at all. I've listened to the single version of Porcelain Heart, but I won't listen to any of the other songs on Watershed until I buy the album (on June 2nd)

I did something similar just a couple weeks ago. Looks like a fucking epic playlist but definitely missing a few gems like the Odyssey (Symphony X) - way more epic than Revelation.

Hmm, I don't know all the songs, I got to check them out ;) I'm quite suprised at your choice of some Tool songs - IMO they have much better ones than Rosetta Stoned, Pushit and Wings part II. And number 33. is just awesome ;)

  • RZephyr07

Couldn't agree more with some of your choices for this epic playlist. The Perfect Element by Pain of Salvation may truly be the most 'epic' song I've ever heard, and I'm glad to see it made your list! There is a glaring absense of any Nightwish on this playlist though.

Killapl: I'm not saying that those are Tool's best songs. It's an epic playlist, so they are what I believe to be their more epic songs. If it was best songs, it would consist of 'Eulogy', 'Ticks & Leeches', and 'Hooker With a Penis'. And yeah, I love number 33. That whole album is fantastic RZephyr07: Never been very interested in operatic vocals. The only bands I listen to with them are Diablo Swing Orchestra, UneXpect (and that's not entirely operatic vocals), and the occasional dose of Aesma Daeva.

The new Nightwish doesn't have operatic vocals. And the opener of their latest album is pretty epic; give it a try. ;)

Oh, one more thing I just realized: I like your list, but where's Moonsorrow?

    Mag 17 2008, 15:03
  • draterami

Chillvie: Haven't gotten around to listening to Moonsorrow yet. I've been meaning to, but there are just so many bands that I haven't tried out yet. I'll have a listen to the new Nightwish.

Agree with the Maiden comment though. There has to be some Maiden there ;). Maybe Paschendale? More candidates: The Tangent - A Place In The Queue W.A.S.P. - The Great Misconceptions of Me W.A.S.P. - The Idol Iced Earth - A Question of Heaven Cea Serin - Into the vivid Cherishing Communic - Waves of Visual Decay Edge of Sanity - Crimson and Crimson II Fates Warning - Wish Lost Horizon - Cry of a Restless Soul My Dying Bride - The Raven and the Rose Vanden Plas - January Sun Nevermore - The Fault of the Flesh Overkill - The Years of Decay Redemption - Sapphire Savatage - Morphine Child Ten - Apparition The Tangent - In Earnest Vanden Plas - Silently Ok, this list turned out to be longer than I initially thought it'd be. ;)

Ramkumarshankar: Thanks for the recs. I haven't listened to all but one of those (Sapphire. Good song, but I haven't listened to it much. Only 5 plays on iTunes). I'll look into the ones I can find. Chillvie: Just *ahem* got the newest Moonsorrow album. Pretty good, but that thing will take a while to get into. Long songs are never easy listens.

I could definitely add to this list (see tag: ) but I will just say that I'm PROUD and HAPPY to see X JAPAN's Art of Life on this list. Seriously. It's far underrated.

Here is my own playlist for "epic"... not complete, some are just artist tags, and of course not all the songs are uploaded into C'est le vie

Would be better with Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann) before Rosetta Stoned, and with Wings for Marie, Pt. 1 before 10,000 Days (Wings, Pt. 2)

I absolutely love number 42, there should be more Ayreon. Amazing Flight would be my pick for "epic songs".
