Fri 26 Sep – Drive-By Truckers
There's nothing quite like going to see a taping of Austin City Limits at KLRU studios. It's not the free beer that does it, either. Getting to see great bands in a small, yet undercrowded, venue is a rare thing. I've been lucky enough to attend two tapings, the last being years ago when Bob Weir brought his band Ratdog to town.
The Drive-By Truckers have been one of my favorite bands for years now, and I was very excited to get a chance to see this taping. The Truckers played a variety of new and old, electric and acoustic material. My personal highlights included an incendiary "Puttin' People on the Moon", "Space City", "Three Dimes Down", "Righteous Path", and an "18 Wheels of Love" that featured an extra chapter to the accompanying story.
Alas, a great rendition of "Marry Me" probably won't be fit for TV, as Patterson spent half the song trying to tune his guitar and motioning for the band to stop. Cooley just laughed and said "we don't need him", playing on.
It'll be interesting to see what makes the cut and what doesn't. I've heard that this episode will be broadcast in November, so keep an eye on your PBS schedules.
