• The City on Film Discography

  • Releases of '06

    Dic 29 2006, 18:41

Well, it is the 29th now so its probably the right time to be doing this, but there are still some to listen to properly (and that haven't quite got here in time) that haven't made the list for that reason. It was a great year overall though, too many great releases flying in from all over the shop. Its too tricky to decide between some (and too much effort), so what I've decided to do is a top 25 and then chuck in sections of good, average, bad, to make it easier. Some will probably get highlighted though. Included will be some splits and EPs, but I've tried to avoid singles (although there are a couple in the list that really needed to be mentioned). In my opinion the releases aren't poor quality (overall - might have a couple of good tracks on them) until after the Plague Songs compilation.

  • Texas is the Reason Discography

    Giu 5 2006, 12:17

Ok, for years now I've tried making mental notes of every Texas Is the Reason release out there and the versions of it. The most complete discography for them on the net that I've come across is probably the one of MTV.com, and that just lists the releases and tracks. So I wanted to compile something more complete that big fans or collectors may find useful. Most of these I have in my collection so I know that they are definately available, but some have just been too expensive to get ahold of (I've noted roughly how much they go for/how much you should be paying). I've also been trying to find out the amount of presses made for each, but that's a lot harder than you'd think as the labels don't seem to keep records of it, so if anyone knows of any extra pressings (or details of pressings) please say.

  • June Gloom? No way

    Giu 1 2006, 13:52

Although I love that track by The Like, it's totally wrong. June this year is looking great! The sun's coming out, the birthday is around the corner and the music is rolling in.

I'm currently listening to the Radiohead show from the 19th (May) that I missed out on, and I have to congratulate both the band and the person that recorded it. Excellent stuff. Everyone seems to be blabbing about Thom Yorke's up-coming album and downloading early - as usual - which, although he supports the internet, is a shame. I hate knowing about albums before they're released and its unavoidable finding out. Anyway, everyone has their preferences as to how much they want to ruin a new release...

I found myself a copy of Colleen's 'Mort aux vaches' the other day on GEMM and I really cannot wait for that. Also Sparrows Swarm and Sing's 'II' has been re-released on three different colour records, so that's going to be exciting to get through the door (couldn't be bothered with all copies though). And finally the vinyl releases of 'In the Red' and 'The thrill of the hunt' by Kind of Like Spitting have been made available, alongside the split with Lemuria, so that's going to be exciting to get through the door. Should also be getting a copy of the 7" single by The Ergs as I'm subscribed to that series. Found out last week that there is also now a vinyl copy of the One AM Radio split with The Wind-Up Bird coming out and I managed to win a copy of 'Nothing for juice' by The Mountain Goats late last night. So much more to look forward to as well including the new Asobi Seksu and Juana Molina albums, and then the one track promo from Yndi Halda. So much music to love.

Best new album I've got recently has to be Camille's 'Le Fil'. So amazing, I'd recommend it to anyone, whether they'd like it or not would be a good question to ask first, but it's so damn good.

Anyone know what's getting released this month that's going to be decent? Also, recommendations on some albums I could ask for for my birthday would be great. I've been looking through my amazon basket and it's full of stuff that'd either be really hard to find and take six weeks, or stuff that I don't desperately want. I'm thinking of asking for some Broker/Dealer (not the Craig Finn project of pretty much the same name), possibly some stuff by The Meters, The Drips, Aphex Twin's 'Drukqs', The Twilight Singers 'The powder burns', Loscil's 'Plume', 'Remembranza' by Murcof and possibly some more Kraut Rock stuff, but I'm running out of ideas, so please, recommend away.

EDIT: How many people are going to cover 'Crazy'? Sensibly they're removing the song from the singles charts, but with Ray LaMontagne, The Kooks, Nelly Furtado and apparently The Twilight Singers and Paris Hilton having a go at the track already, it's going to drive everyone insane. It's good to hear different interpretations of the tune, but it is getting really annoying. Gnarls Barkley come off as quite a one hit wonder anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter too much.

Album Club June possibilities (* = most wanted, ^ = most likely)...

    Juana Molina - Son
Mission of Burma - The Obliterati
    Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
Pheonix - It's Never Been Like That *
    Paul Simon - Surprise
Paul Weller - Catch - Flame
Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out of This Country ^
    Danielson - Ships *
Current 93 - Black Ships ate the sky
    ManyFingers - Our worn shadow
Don Caballero - World class listening problem
Vetiver - To find me gone
Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint - The river in reverse
Six Organs of Admittance - The sun awakens *^
Alexi Murdoch - Time without consequence ^
    Charalambides - A Vintage Burden ^
    Bong-Ra - Stereohype Heroin Hooker
V/A - Paint it black (Rolling Stones covers)
    V/A - Calypso at Dirty Jim's ^
Tells - Hope your wounds heal
    Ian Love - Ian Love
Barry Adamson - Stranger on the sofa
Tender Trap - 6 Billion People
Senor Coconut - Yellow fever! ^
  • Chili Peppers rip off Tom Petty?

    Mag 19 2006, 0:52

I was pointed to this mp3, and to be honest, it really does sound like they could have. Its not like Tom Petty is the most unknown artist, but then again its only three common chords. So... opinions?

    Tom Petty
    Red Hot Chili Peppers

'Mary Janes last dance' and 'Dani California'
  • This past week...

    Mag 6 2006, 14:17

... I've mostly been eating plasticine.

No, I haven't really, just reminiscing over the Fast Show there.

It's been a stressful week. Written 10,000 words for three essays, missed one hand in date - if I hand it in before next Thursday then I can get a max of 40%, any time after that its 0% - and generally struggling with the late nights, early mornings to get stuff done. So today I had a nice wake up at 1:30 in the afternoon... lovely.

Anyway, I woke up to find the Reuben/Frank Turner split on the kitchen table. Taken a while to get here, but it was quite good timing really. However. If I wanted a record that sucked more I don't think it would be possible. Sorry if you're a fan of it, but its pretty sh*t. Reuben's track starts off with a sped up version of the drums from 'At the river' (Groove Armada - which I'm sure they took from somewhere as well) and then goes into a crappy British version of Finger Eleven. I've never been a fan of Reuben though, always found them a bit boring. But then you flip it over to the Frank Turner side (the man from the defunct Million Dead) and you just get a poor man's Billy Bragg tune. The tracks that I've found of his online had been ok, at least a lot better than this. It was a complete waste of £3... I dread to think what the Dartz! one is like (*shudders* - or the No. 1 Son one for that matter), and I daren't get the This Et Al and Adzuki split as they're both actually decent bands - don't want to get put off.

Its one of the reasons I've started to give up buying these 7"s that get released just to get a bit of attention for the label or band. They rarely turn out to be good. Then again, trying to find a good, newly released 7" at the moment is damn hard. I've given up. I've realised that I'd much rather spend £15 on the Jimmy Eat World/Christie Front Drive split than buy 7 new average records. Same with CDs now as well. I'm really cutting down. It was fun for a couple of years piling money onto the credit card, but I've realised how stupid it is. There are a few I know I'm going to get in the next few weeks, but other than that, its cut-down land for me.

After a couple of revelations I had this week on life, I came across the new Mission Impossible tune. Kanye West, the prick of the 21st century, and Twista, the "fastest rapper in the world" who had a hit song last year (I think it was - maybe the year before, can't remember), which was actually quite good, have done it. Oh, and some woman I'd never heard of. Anyway, it's absolute bollocks. Don't bother listening to it. Infact, just don't bother listening to Kanye West ever again. Can't understand why people enjoy his music, but each to their own and all that...

Then last night, Pearl Jam and Corinne Bailey Rae were on Jools Holland. They were the only two that I enjoy that were on it anyway. Only caught the show half way through - thought it started next week - and so only saw Pearl Jam perform 'Alive', but amazingly well. I've been through a drought with that band since 'Riot Act', but I'm really hoping the self-titled will bring back the love. There was only a couple of albums I couldn't get on with of theirs, and unfortunately it left to four years of neglect.

Channel flicking after Jools Holland I landed on a film called 'Bet your life'. Now, it sounded terrible, and a lot of it was quite poor, but I loved it. It's a great idea for a film and really got me thinking, would I bet my life for $2,400,000? If the dollar was stronger I think I would. Would you?

Anyway... what's been rolling around the music player this week? Quite a lot of Pulp, Jackson C. Frank and Jeff Buckley. A lot of Davy Graham, a couple of "new" Sufjan Stevens tracks, a bit of Sparklejet and a couple of classic tracks from Touch & Go and Tzant. The latest AFX CD has managed to get me up every morning, and Alarm Will Sound's covers of Aphex Twin have had my head in a mangler.
Has anyone noticed just how much attention Boris has started to get? In the past couple of months it seems that everywhere I turn there's a mention of them. Have they become another Pitchfork fad or something?

Ooooooh, and best thing I've heard this week is probably K. It was a side project of the lady from Ida, don't know how much she did on the project (finding out is impossible), but I found a 7" of that recently and it was excellent.

Got to run now to close the windows as its raining.
  • Holy pantaloons!

    Apr 29 2006, 0:21

Last few days I've been following a vinyl copy of Coheed & Cambria's 'Second stage turbine blade' on ebay and it finished last night...

    Ebay link

My eyes nearly popped out of my head! Why? Because I have a copy that I paid £8 for three or so years ago. That's like 1000% profit! Who would have imagined that a few years ago?
I know 'Welcome home' has suddenly pushed them a little further forward, but I really didn't think it was by that much.

I'm going to start following more things that I own on ebay from now on. I know my copy of The Mountain Goats 'Come, come to the sunset tree' is worth roughly £50/60 and there's a few that I've seen go for about £30 (Cap'n Jazz, Moss Icon, The Hated), but that Coheed one was quite out of the blue, so I'm thinking I'm watching the wrong ones.
I've also got limited colour pressings of two albums by The Decemberists ('Castaways & Cutouts' and 'Picaresque') that I think should be worth a lot, but they don't quite have enough attention yet (despite deserving it).

Also, this week I managed to overflow my 5 CD towers from Ikea, got a bunch of cheap/free 7"s and got the new album club package.
The album club was a bit of a mixed bag this month...

    Catherine Feeny - Hurricane glass
Love Is All - Nine times that same song
    Gotan Project - Lunático
    Spank Rock - YoYoYoYoYo

All are decent - the Catherine Feeny one is outstanding - but really could've done a bit better I feel. The fact that they'd already passed out a Spank Rock release last year just makes me feel like they didn't put much effort into the releases or that they've been paid by their label to get rid of a load.

Really got into a capella stuff lately as well. Probably having been inspired by that car advert - if you've seen it you'll know the one I'm talking about - but I don't really care, its great stuff. There's a guy called Joseph Campagna who does a radio show (on the net) full of the stuff and things like 'I am the walrus' (The Beatles) and 'Everlong' (Foo Fighters) have been played. Amazing. And then there's a CD called 'The Unaccompanied Voice: An A Capella Compilation' that was released years ago on the great Secretly Canadian which has some slightly dodgy tracks, but some awe-inspiring stuff as well. Then on top of all that there's The Virginia Hullabahoos's version of 'Easy lover' (Phil Collins) which everyone should go and hunt down.

Anyway, got to sleep now as I have to work my ass off this weekend on essays I don't want to do.

Just a couple of things to finish off, does anyone know when the vinyl versions of the Kind of Like Spitting albums are being released so that us UK people can buy?
Anyone have any release news on the Jason Molina or Magnolia Electric Co. CDs?

The Letting Up Despite Great Faults disc is thought to be released in July now and will be called 'The Movement'!

    The Movement EP Tracklist:
    1. Disasters are okay ($)
    2. Movement (&)
    3. I Hear You Drowning But I'm Tied ($)
    4. Maybe I'll Hide With You ($)
    5. Mixtape Receipt (*)
    6. If you're here today ($)
    7. Pretending Green Grass (&)

    * = New track
$ = Tracks from 'Hide. Pretend'
& = Tracks that have had demos on the net in the past

I'm sure there's a couple of other things, just can't think, want bed.

EDIT: Has anyone noticed that 2006 seems to be quite a good year for re-releases?
Already arrived... Talking Heads (loads of 'em), Faust ('Faust IV'), Ray Davies ('The Storyteller'), The Rolling Stones (Japanese vinyl replicas), Grateful Dead (5 remastered), Sonic Youth, The Eagles, The Moody Blues, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly., I'm sure there have been more.

Ones still to come... Sebadoh, Sparrows Swarm and Sing, Yndi Halda, Can
  • I am...

I swear this person is cheating us all with the many disguises...

    I Am Jack
    I Am Kloot
    I Am Spoonbender
    I Am Electric
    I Am Ghost
    I Am Robot and Proud
I Am The World Trade Center
    I Am The Avalanche

They're all the ones I can think of off the top of my head. My guess is its Uri Geller.
How many other names are there like this?

"1st snake I saw, I crowed in the cab. 2nd snake I saw I thought, "oh this could be bad". Third snake I saw, fangs an' all, was right next to the 4th, 5th and 6th snake, then it was hard to count them all. Snakes on a plane, bitch say my name, snakes on a plane."
