• Rock Herk 2008 (Day 2)

    Lug 20 2008, 16:49

Fri 18 Jul – Rock Herk
Brief summary of the day's events:
    Campus - 2/5
Far too much time spent writing breakdowns and too little on riffs left a lot to be desired. Still a lot of potential for these Belgians.

    Lagwagon - 3/5
Some of the greatest crowd banter ever. I wish I's known more Lagwagon songs, because every moment was just damn good fun despite being slightly repetetive.

    Drumcorps - 4/5
Couldn't stay for long due to a little clash with Future of the Left, but this Grind/Breakcore DJ was simply amazing. Kicking the set off with an amazing mash-up of Converge songs, this was possibly the heaviest, craziest show I'd ever seen.

Future of the Left - 5/5
If you think Rock 'n' Roll and don't instantly think of these guys, then there's something wrong with you. Playing an excellent selection from last year's debut Curses, Future of the Left are definitely a live band to look out for.

    Red Sparrowes - 4/5
Simply epic. Dizzying heights and crushing lows coming together in such a beautifully crafted set.

Cutting Pink With Knives - 5/5
The fact that they get HHHHH off just 15 minutes of a show puts into perspective how fantastic these guys are. Playing their last ever show together, they made it count with amazing interaction with the crowd (which involved playing most of the set off the stage) and an unrelelnting passion to simply go nuts. Fantastic show.

    Battles - 4/5
Solid set list with highlights including the crowd-pleaser Atlas and Leyndecker, Battles truly deserve their place atop the mountain of modern math rock bands.

    Bane - 3/5
Despite only staying in the dusty crowd for about 15 minutes, Bane made it very clear to me why they have become one of the most important bands in modern hardcore. The crowd were as energetic as the band themselves, throwing themselves into every chant and breakdown.

    Amen Ra - 4/5
Amen Ra are awe-inspiring in concert. Playing a particularly Mass IIII heavy set, they really got the crowd going with the closer Silver Needle. Golden Nail. Am Kreuz and the Pain is it Shapeless? also managed to sneak their way into the set for a spell-binding hour of sludge metal masterclass.

Just a quick breakdown of the bands I saw. Ratings are out of 10

    Day 1

    Seasick Steve - 9
Coolest man ever. Great, crazy start to the festival.

    Gogol Bordello - 10
    Crowd was amazing. Wonderful atmosphere.

    Liars - 10
Loud, quiet, fast, slow, happy , sad, angry...Liars live are all of these and more. Top 10 shows of all time.

    The Blackout - 6
OK on record but their live show gives away why these guys are not any bigger.

    The Go! Team - 8
    Fun, fun happy dancing time!

    Fall Out Boy - 6
Watched from far. Never had too high an opinion of them and the live show changed nothing.

    Dizzee Rascal - 10
Jus' a rascal! Dizzee Rascal! Great performer and atmosphere.

    Battles - 10
Tight as you like it. Top 10 shows of all time.

    Kaiser Chiefs - 7
Not too much of a fan but I do enjoy them. Not a bad show at all.

    Basement Jaxx - 7
Not the most exciting show, but still fun.

    Day 2

    Art Brut - 8
Love this band, fantastic day opener.

    Biffy Clyro - 9
Really exciting show. They will be hitting it big soon I reckon.

    The Enemy - 0
    CRAP

    Funeral for a Friend - 7
Only got into them because some friends are big fans. Very tight show and lots of fun.

    Matt and Kim - 9
Happiest people alive who were so amazed at playing the Club at Pukkelpop. Never a dull moment.

    Badly Drawn Boy - 7
Nice show. Caught Damen's harmonica. End with Silent Sigh was really amazing.

    Patrick Wolf - 10
Amazing show. Top 10 shows of all time.

    Arcade Fire - 9
    Excellent, tight show.

    Smashing Pumpkins - 9
A few of my favourites were missing but seeing Jimmy Chamberlin and Billy Corgan was such an experience. Hearing Smashing Pumpkins that loud will not be forgotten too quickly.

    Day 3

    Hellogoodbye - 2
Pretty poor indeed. Dragged to show by douches.

    Morda - 3
    Meh.

Heavy Heavy Low Low - 6
One for every minute they played and every song that nobody recognised or even knew when they had finished.

    Enter Shikari - 8
As much as I hate to say it, they are very fun live.

    The Shins - 9
    Brilliant stuff.

Fear Before the March of Flames - 7
A poor crowd did not reflect how much heart and passion was being thrown into this performance. Can't wait to get another chance to see them properly.

From Autumn to Ashes - 7
    Good fun.

    Spoon - 6
A bit more fun, but nothing too special.

    Justice - 7
A good old dance but Electro really isn't my thing and I did get bored quite quickly.

    Mad Caddies - 9
Some truly memorable moments from this show, Monkeys being the best.

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - 10
3 firsts for me at this show:
    Stage destroyed
Hardcore dancing at an Indie Rock show
Crowd surfing at an Indie Rock show
    Brilliant stuff
  • Why HORSE the Band are better than Enter Shikari

    Apr 3 2007, 21:54

I haven't seen Enter Shikari play a version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...
  • Comeback Kid - February 25th

    Feb 26 2007, 14:36

Here's just a quick "breakdown" (ahaha) of the bands we saw.

    Final Prayer - 6/10

Hadn't heard any of these guys so had no expectations. However they had some excellent breakdowns and covered Rather Be Dead by the almighty Refused, so overall a good performance.

    Rise And Fall - 8/10

These guys can really perform. They played some good ones and the crowd really got going. Defintely keep an eye out for these guys in the future.

    Justice - 2/10

What the hell? These guys did not deserve to be after Rise and Fall. There was nothing strictly wrong with them, they were just dull and uninventive.

    Comeback Kid - 10/10

Fantastic set list. Great performers. Good interaction with the crowd and a fantastic atmosphere. Could not ask for more. These guys were brilliant.

  • Several Reasons Why Idiot Pilot are Better than You

    Set 18 2006, 21:04

    1. They only have two members yet somehow they make more noise than if the entire population of the UK played at the same time on guitars all at 11

    2. Daniel Anderson's screams

    3. Michael Harris' moans

    5. They mix so many different styles of music and make them all sound better

    6. They make God's penis look small.

    7. To Buy a Gun would smash off the face of every emo fag ever.

    8. A lot of people I know don't know who they are (always a bonus)

    9. The video for a day in the life of a pool shark

    10. The dancer I saw in one of their live videos.
  • Death From Above is Dead

    Ago 4 2006, 9:42

    http://www.deathfromabove1979.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=2041

So that's it. Just a few months after Test Icicles announced that they were ending it, Death From Above 1979 have also thrown in the towel. So now everyone from BSB who went to Pukkelpop last year and didn't see them, you can just kill yourself. Never again will they grace the world with their magnificence. I seriously doubt a MSTRKRFT show will be anything like a DFA show...oh well, life sucks.
  • New Themselves:Conspire

    Lug 31 2006, 11:50

Themselves:Conspire is being completely redone so my old songs are no longer part of it. I'm making it into a minimalist doom/sludge shoegaze sort of thing and the first song is already availabe on myspace and purevolume. I personally think it's much better.
