I.
In April 2003, Neko Case was voted the "Sexiest Babe of Indie Rock" in a Playboy.com internet poll. She received 32% of the vote. Playboy asked her to pose nude for the magazine, but she declined their offer. She told Entertainment Weekly: I didn't want to be the girl who posed in Playboy and then—by the way—made some music. I would be really fucking irritated if after a show somebody came up to me and handed me some naked picture of myself and wanted me to sign it instead of my CD.

Nancy Sinatra's 1966 album Sugar was banned in Boston, MA due to its cover image of her in a bikini.

I started making a note in My Profile about my current avatar, a rockhopper penquin, but I thought I could turn the note into a running observational commentary on some of the artists in my library. Here is the first installment.

I.
The cover of Fleetwood Mac's 1973 album Penguin features a rockhopper penguin. Bass guitarist John McVie used to go to the zoo and watch the penguins. He thought they were fascinating creatures. He also photographed them often. He has a penguin tattoo on his right forearm. The penguin subsequently became Fleetwood Mac's mascot.

The song Hot Topic on Le Tigre's 1999 album Le Tigre pays tribute to dozens of female visual artists, musicians, writers, feminists and others who have inspired them. Among the honorees are: Yoko Ono, Cibo Matto, Aretha Franklin, Vaginal Cream Davis, Yayoi Kusama, Angela Davis, Sleater-Kinney, Billy Tipton, Laura Cottingham, James Baldwin, and singer (and band founder) Kathleen Hanna's close friend Tammy Rae Carland.
III.
Neko Case cited filmmaker David Lynch, music composer Angelo Badalamenti, and Neil Young's soundtrack to the film Dead Man to be influences on her 2002 album Blacklisted.
