Ott 15 2006, 5:47So I guess Justin and I have made an impromptu tradition. Every Saturday for the past two weeks, we've gone to Flipnotics with whoever we happen to be with. First it was George, then Kady, and Kady and Sophie last night. We've haven't seen a bad act yet, so I don't see any reason why we would stop going. Unfourtunately, I don't remember the names of the first two bands we saw there, but last night a guy by the name of Marcus Rubio played some really cool stuff. He was a one-man band; he played acoustic guitar, violin, and xylophone, with a trumpet joining for a couple songs. His voice was VERY high-pitched (kinda reminded me of Sufjan Stevens), almost to the point of being unbearable, but he really put emotion into his musicianship and songwriting. That was what really made the show something special; his multi-tasking ability was amazing. Rubio had a loop-recorder, in which he would play a verse, hit the foot-pedal, play another verse, hit the foot-pedal, and quickly grab his guitar. With random xylaphone pings, a guest blues singer who sang his damn heart out, and a tune about zombies annihilating the earth, it all came together very nicely. If you get the chance to see him at a local venue, I suggest you don't pass up the opportunity.
Anyway, just some random stuff I've been listening to lately:
K-Os - Atlantis
The Mother of Love Emulates the Shapes of Cynthia
It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
Paid In Full
It's Time to Decide
All highly recommended. Happy listening!
Set 27 2006, 23:15Erik Hokkanen's Laboratory. That probably doesn't mean anything to you, but it should. This little southern blues quartet played the most foot-stomping, knee-slapping show I've ever been to. When we (me, Justin, and George) arrived, Flipnotics was fairly empty, but by the time I left, there barely any standing room avaliable. There wasn't a weak link the group; everybody was a top notch musician. I really wish I wouldn't have had to leave early, as I was enjoying myself immensely.
Sonic Youth. Daydream Nation. I had no idea.
Me and the gang are gonna go over to the Red Eyed Fly tonight and see some (probably shitty) hardcore. It's a one dollar cover, so I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it. Lineup: Firekills, Dawn Over Zero, and Slider. Wish me luck.
