Boroughs of NYC - Best Rappers?

Bronx got Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Big Pun, Camp Lo, Kool Keith, Swizz Beatz, Cory Gunz, KRS-One, *CL Smooth, *Slick Rick, & *Canibus (*barely).

Brooklyn put out Sean Price, Saigon, Big Daddy Kane, Busta Rhymes, GZA, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Fabolous, Papoose, Joell Ortiz, O.C., AZ, Ill Bill, GangStarr, Phife Dawg, M.O.P., Pumpkinhead, Masta Ace, Keith Murray, Jay-Z, The Notorious B.I.G., Rise, Foxy Brown, Maino, Necro, Sticky Fingaz, Junior M.A.F.I.A., Killah Priest, MC Lyte, Memphis Bleek, & Lil Mama.

Queens gave us Cormega, Stack Bundles, A Tribe Called Quest, Grafh, 50 Cent, Black Sheep, Organized Konfusion, Nas, Kool G Rap, Mobb Deep, LL Cool J, Pharoahe Monch, Consequence, Fredro Starr, Lloyd Banks, Ja Rule, Lost Boyz, Nicki Minaj, & Styles P.

Staten Island gave us the Wu-Tang Clan and Cappadonna.

Manhattan gave us Big L, Ma$e, Cam'Ron, Bloodshed, Juelz Santana, Loon, Jim Jones, JR Writer, Kurtis Blow, Immortal Technique, Jae Millz, Cannibal Ox, Charles Hamilton, Max B, MIMS, Puff Dady, and *Joe Buddens & *2Pac (*though neither rep NY).

I'd take Brooklyn. Papoose, Busta, Mos Def, Gangstarr, Masta Ace = Great. Of course Queens and Brookyln are stacked because they're the biggest, but Manhattan doesn't look too bad if you include the two rappers who don't claim it. Queens and Manhattan do get a strike against them for harboring Max B and Ja Rule in my book.

    Other notable areas:
Yonkers - DMX, Jadakiss, Sheek Louch
Long Island - MF DOOM, Public Enemy, Aesop Rock, EPMD, De La Soul

  • White Boy Gets Arrested for Reciting Rap Lyrics

    Mar 13 2008, 0:04

"FEBRUARY 5--A 19-year-old man was arrested Sunday night for singing the lyrics to a profane rap song as he walked on a Florida street. Christopher Holder was nabbed after a woman complained to police that her two children (ages 5 and 14) heard Holder repeatedly reciting the words "mother fucker," according to a Hernando County Sheriff's Office report. When questioned by deputies, Holder "immediately began arguing that he did nothing wrong," and explained that he was merely covering a song by Louisiana rapper Lil' Boosie, whose most recent album, "Bad Azz," includes cuts like "My Nigga" and "Fuck You." But Holder, pictured in the above mug shot, added that he "agreed that he did not believe children needed to hear language such as that being hollered down the road." Holder was charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor."

  • Artists Who Can Release Albums With No Features

    Dic 29 2007, 22:20

In my opinion, there are only a few select artists in the rap game who can release albums with no features, and the industry wouldn't care. Rappers who can go a whole album solo, with no help or saving grace from another rapper on a single track on the album. Other artists can't do this for 1 of 3 reasons:
    1. They have a mildly-annoying to REALLY-annoying voice, and no one wants to hear that for a whole album
(Examples: Lil Boosie, Young Jeezy, Freeway, etc.)
    2. They aren't really legendary lyricists, and can't waste a lifetime of lyrics on one album
(Examples: David Banner, Dr. Dre, or pretty much any producer who attempts to rap - and Bow Wow)
    3. Their rhymes just suck
(Examples: Hundreds of up-and-coming artists, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Gucci Mane, Jim Jones, Chingy)

So without further ado, here's my list of artists that can release one of these aforementioned "special" albums:

Shawn's List of Artists who can Pull Off an Album Release with No Features
    1. Eminem - Raw Power - His lyrics are so powerful that you are able to really focus on a song instead of listening to it- but not really hearing it. This happens often with the commercial rappers, but Eminem doesn't let a song own him, he owns that song.

    2. Ludacris - Charisma - One of the most consistent rappers around, Luda goes hard on every track, gives 100% effort 100% of the time. Who needs features when you've got a rapper with energy like that?

    3. Chamillionaire - Harmony - Lots of rappers have resorted to having singers like T-Pain, Ne-Yo, or Chris Brown singing their hooks. Cham doesn't need a singer- Cham can sing his own damn hooks. Needs harmony? Cham's got that too. That's talent.

    4. Lupe Fiasco - Storytelling - With only two albums, it's become evident that Lupe isn't just another backpack rapper trying to make it (Kanye West), and he's not another politically charged Public Enemy wannabe (Common). Lupe has created his own style, and I don't forsee anyone imitating this half-nerdy/half-hustler black supremacist glasses-wearing phenom. A legend in his own mind.

    5. Nas - Smooth Mafioso Style - Sure he's got a little rasp in his voice, but I have yet to find another rapper who run through a track so smooth and effortlessly, and when needed he'll cream you with complex lyrics and insane metaphors that'll leave you dazed and confuzed. That's what I call a legendary style.

    6. Common - Poetry - You want real hip-hop? You want to bring rap back to it's roots? Look no further than my man Common. Anyone who says Hip-Hop is dead better do another autopsy, because Common is the beating heart keeping rap alive. "Shawn, you've said a lot without really saying anything..." OK. You listen to Common's 2005 album Be. It'll speak for itself.

    Honorable Mentions:
Styles P - Musical - Styles is severely underrated in my opinion. From his first album, Styles has really taught me what music is really about. Plus, you get a gangster and a gentleman all rolled into one. You want tracks about your hustle & grind? You've got it. You want your standard "Fuck the media" style? You've got it. You want that gritty and raw underground flow combined with rhymes that will end a man's career? Well let's just say, Styles' music is... music to my ears

Ice Cube - Style - Ice Cube has a style like no other. Although many say he's been falling off lately, don't count him out yet. Rap is in his blood, and while other rappers listen to legends for inspiration, I'd advise Cube to just listen to himself - his early days, of course. I could listen to Cube's old rhymes all day. If you're going on a road trip, I suggest you pop in one of Cube's albums from the 90s and you'll have yourself a rowdy-ol'-time.

Kanye West - Production - One of the few producers (along with Dr. Dre) who may truly be considered a successful rapper. His albums never fail to have a hot track and a bangin' single. I look at his '07 album Graduation, and I feel that if he had done without T-Pain and Lil' Wayne, he would've had the same great album.
OutKast (Andre 3000 & Big Boi) - Originality - Can't count them on the list since they are technically two artists, but the group will always try something new, and never fail with great productions and awesome lyrics as a whole.

*Notes* Yeah, 6 is an odd number to stop on, but I ended up with 10 anyway. This is all strictly my opinion. This isn't a best rappers list, or best albums list; it's just what I said it was. "Artists Who Can Release Albums With No Features"
