My choices are not primarily about musicality, voice, even lyrics really. And I'm probably showing quite a bit of musical ignorance here (as well as my unrepentant popular commonplace musical taste) - but these are the songs that hit me emotionally - they evoke strong feelings, hopes and dreams. When I hear them I want their magic to last forever.
These are the songs I'll NEVER turn off the radio on or skip on my music player. As a matter of fact - these are the songs I often have to play a second time immediately thereafter.
The Top 5
#1 Crazy
Conveyed magic: Being in love with life in spite of this being a sometimes painful insensible world.
Other magic: Seal's smooth as silk voice and the music that makes you want to sway with it.
Favourite bit:
And through a fractal on a breaking wall,
I see you my friend, and touch your face again
Everytime I hear those lines I literally can feel my husband stroke my cheek to comfort me.
#2
Drops Of Jupiter
Conveyed magic: The story of someone who loves so profoundly they will keep on doing so even though the loved one leaves them for a larger more magical world. But he never stops hoping the the magic of his love will outlast the glittering world.
Other magic: The music and the lyrics both match the longing, the currently unrequited love, and both the pain and joy in the singer's heart.
Favourite bit:
Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken
Your best friend always sticking up for you even when I know you’re wrong
Can you imagine no first dance, freeze dried romance five-hour phone
Conversation
The best soy latte that you ever had . . . and me
The most wonderful summation of the magic of every day love I've every heard.
#3
Mr. Blue Sky
Conveyed magic: Things may go wrong for a while, right for while, wrong for a while - but no matter how bad they get, that blue sky will come again.
Other magic: While the voices sound sad and longing the whole effect of the song is to make me want to bounce and bop - making me believe it all the more.
Favourite bit: The wonderful harmonies.
#4
Smooth
Conveyed magic: The heat and longing of obsession.
Other magic: When I listen to it, I'm there in the sweltering heat of the tropics - 7 inches from the mid day sun
Favourite bits: Rob Thomas' voice and Santana's virtuosity on the guitar. Who could ask for more than that?
#5 Happy Together
Conveyed magic: Sometimes romantic love works. Forever.
Other magic: The perfect pop song. It stays with you yet it never aggrevates.
Favourite bits: Has to be the vocal harmonies. (And the throwaway line How is the weather at the end, that always makes me smile.)
Honourable mentions they just miss the top 5 by a hair
Sweet Child o' Mine
Bitch
Kryptonite
Mas Tequila
Black Velvet
And one more that it is yet too soon to tell if it will stand the passage of time
