I noticed that you were asking about Agalloch's fb group page. "Collecting Agalloch" was closed some time ago, now there's similar page called "Of Agalloch, Vinyl and Wooden Boxes", which is created by the same guy.

Hey there! I haven't gotten it yet. I have a few ideas bouncing around in my head. One is a red ball of yarn and a yellow ball of yarn with a reaper's scythe and the other is a woman with spider legs and a knife. Can't decide!

your following 3 comments made on 24th Sep 2011 for Yes' Tales from Topographic Oceans: Comment #1: i feel like i need to be high for this ~ Comment #2: not that i dont like it enough sober but when i listen to it i get this romanticized vision of me sitting in the dark or under the stars stoned and giddily tweaking to the last big part of the revealing science of god ~ Comment #3: so many lovely sounds ~ ~ ~ i laughed my f*cking ass off due to the fact that i purchased Pink Floyds' Wish You Were Here the day it hit the stores, got back to my dorm room, closed the blinds, shut off the lights, indulged a bit and then i sat/lay on my bed and let Floyd take me away…. your comments totally made my night as i listen to Tales… thanks David

Hi. This might be a little creepy but I think you're my favorite last.fm user. I see your comments on so many of my favorite artists/songs and I agree with almost everything you say. FUCK YEAH GRATEFUL DEAD.

Magnolia is my favorite PT Anderson film, even though I thought The Master and There Will Be Blood are also great ones. The only Malicks I've seen are the two I mentioned but apparently most of his filmography is excellent and I need to see nearly all his films over the summer. Maybe The Instructions is taking so long because it's such a heavy load? Did you get paperback or hardcover? They're both the same dimensions but the spine/binding on the paperback is much less....appealing? Dude ASoS is the best in the series and has so many mindfucks about it. What did you think of the Red Wedding?

Films: Recent ones include Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty (Django was pretty decent). But also: My Dinner with Andre, Requiem for a Dream, The Pianist, Memento, The Fountain, The Tree of Life, Magnolia, The Thin Red Line, Children of Men. I consider all of these movies great but if you want me to narrow the recommendations down, I'm happy to do so.

Reads: The Instructions. It's a 1000 page fiction novel about a child who believes he is the Jewish Messiah and organizes a terrorist cell within his school and others. I took the risk of buying the book since I had never heard of it or the author, but the reviews made it seem like something special and memorable and unique, which it is. Rarely dull, very clever, just know that its format is a little unconventional, many of the characters are deliberately not-so-believeable and some of the language is seemingly a little pretentious, so have a dictionary nearby. I also love A Song of Ice And Fire, though those are more 1000 page epics. I can give more suggestions later?

Actually scratch that, since 'composer' is synonymous with 'songwriter' and writing music in general -- I consider him to be at least one of the greatest composers. Obviously I prefer Agalloch, and I think Neige achieved even greater depth on Souvenirs than any of them.

  • Agravenlife

But if you want a specific recommendation similar to Agalloch, Ennio Morricone is one of their greatest influences: try this, this and this. In my opinion he's the greatest composer of the 20th century.

So basically, what you're asking me for is general music rec's. Check out my most played tracks, assuming you enjoy the same subject matter as I do you will probably like it. Not everything on there is 100% awesome though, "The Divinity of Wisdom" has one immensely epic part around the middle, and a joke at the end.

  • Agravenlife

Schopenhauer said "music speaks not of things, but of pure weal and woe, which are the only realities of the will: that is why it speaks so much to the heart, while it has nothing to say directly to the head and it is a misuse of it to demand that it should do so.". Many so called 'progressive' artists today are progressive only in a decadent sense, you no longer need to produce the commensurate depth in a piece for it to be called 'progressive', it's like reading the pretentious verbiage of a pseudo-intellectual that doesn't really point to any discoverable objects, it's meaningless complexity, bloat (and the appeal for the pseudo-musician is the same as for the pseudo-intellectual; they are only interested in projecting an image of themselves as 'intellectual' or 'technical', and despite their rich vocabularies they have no idea what to do with them, they are merely pretending, and that's fine by them, because all they care about is what this bloat signals socially to their peers).

    Luglio 2012
  • Agravenlife

Then I recommend good music, because that's what it amounts to in the end. All music is more or less progressive (or negatively so, like some idée fixe musicians who can not compose intuitively so they do the opposite as much as possible, usually because they're not particularly musical to begin with, and often because it grants them social discinction, which is more important to subhumans than anything of any real use), Lady Gaga is progressive in a very minor sense, but in the same [actual] sense as Agalloch. The sensation of being told an epic saga, like She Painted Fire, or a less epic but still meaningful (like a sentence can be meaningful, i.e. not nonsensical, but structured and effective) story, like your average pop song, is what progression is music does to you. The problem for the musician is that the more complexity he uses (instrument, technique), the more difficult it becomes to produce something 'good' (effective). Compare Anaal Nathrakh before and after Passion.

You mean you want examples to help clarify what I mean by progressive, or just general music recs?
