I don't really know how to compare the two exercises since they're pretty different. On paper, bench seems like more, but dumbbell press exercises each side individually. my max bench is 195, and my max dumbbell press is 75 (or 150? total?) but yeah they're complementary and help get your pecs jacked bruh.

I say "cardio kills gainz!" all the time partially joking, but actually for me my metabolism is ridiculous so the amount of cardio I do weekly (which isn't a lot), is definitely enough to affect my gainz. Last year around aug-sept was when I was at my biggest and I did zero cardio for like 4-5 months. I've grown beyond the "just get as big as I can" goal, and I'm looking to be more well rounded, and more combat effective by Army standards.

Depending on the day, flat shoes are actually encouraged. I wear chucks on my deadlift/squat days. Flyknits look fly as fuck, but I'm not paying 160 for them. The Flyknit Lunar 3s doe... anyway, for other days I just wear my running shoes. ASICS are my go to because I have flat wide feet. I also got into the habit of running 1.5 to 2 miles every day before my lifting session. Need to keep my cardio up because army. Ugh. Killin the gainz. tho.

We need to Lift too. "The Iron is the best antidepressant I have ever found. There is no better way to fight weakness than with strength. Once the mind and body have been awakened to their true potential, it’s impossible to turn back. The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you’re a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds." – Henry Rollins.

Pain and injuries all the time. Just the name of the game. I get it in my left elbow. I fucked up my wrist a while back too. It's more than likely your form. Without seeing you bench/ lift or whatever it's impossible for me to tell. Are you locking out your elbows? I had wrist pain for the longest time and I couldn't bicep curl a bar which was so annoying. My buddy pointed out my form was the cause and now I'm fine. We gotta lift bruh. But yeah RICE. “I went to Dartmouth intending to go to med school. Failing a chemistry class had inspired my love of history, and I ended up majoring in the classics. By the summer of 1998, my classmates were signing six-figure contracts as consultants and investment bankers. I didn’t understand what we, at age twenty-two, could possibly be consulted about. others headed off to law school or medical school for a few more years of reading instead of living. None of it appealed to me. I wanted to go on a great adventure, to prove myself, to serve my country. I wanted to do something so hard that no one could ever talk shit to me. In Athens or Sparta, my decision would have been easy. I felt as if I had been born too late. There was no longer a place in the world for a young man who wanted to wear armor and slay dragons.” - Nate Fick

"I sensed a continuity with other infantrymen stretching back to Thermopylae. Weapons and tactics may have changed,d but they were only accouterments. The men stayed teh same. In a time of satellites and missile strikes, the part of me that felt I'd been born too late was drawn to the infantry, where courage still counts. Being a Marine was not about money for graduate school or learning a skill; it was a rite of passage in a society becoming so soft and homogenized that the very concept was often sneered at." I love that last line. That's what I want, a rite of passage in a society becoming so soft and homogenized that the veyr concept was often sneered at. This one sentence makes me wanna go out and lift some heavy ass weights bruh.

One of my favorite miniseries of all time. Extremely accurate. I read Nathaniel Fick's book, "One Bullet Away" and it remains one of my favorites. The way he writes the justifications why he joined the military straight out of Dartmouth is basically what I could never articulate myself. I even heard him speak live once. Smart guy. I read the book it was based off, Generation Kill by Evan Wright too and it's great, and goes more into detail the events of the miniseries. Good choice Dr. West.

reddit. "Sort of, they didn't use drugs or physically torture him. The CIA was using a personality test type thing on students at Harvard (I think it was invented by Peter Murray or a name similar to that). They then basically used this interrogation technique of breaking down Russian spies but they used it on this student, Ted Kaczynski. They had him write a paper on his overall beliefs about life and the world (to get every opinion that was important to him on paper) then they tore apart his opinion and drilled into him everything that was wrong with it. They broke him down that way. Then Kaczynski went and lived in the woods away from society for years to rebuild and perfect this essay and theory that the CIA interrogation had torn apart. Then he started blackmailing Washington Post and other corporations to publish this Manifesto he created, otherwise he would mail bombs places, which he did. The Washington Post published it and that was the Unabomber Manifesto"

Hahha I've sent that exact Office clip to marc. Oh and I forgot to mention the rep ranges. A lot of people who've never lifted are surprised when I say only 6-8 since they think doing like 20-30 is normal. The idea behind the 6-8 rep range is to adjust your weight according to your ability, and by that 8th rep you shoulde be really struggling and barely able to lift it. So right now for 8 reps I can just barely push out say 175lbs on bench press. Etc. If by the 8th rep or so you think it's too easy? Go up in weight. And I go 4-5 sets. The first set is usually a light warmup. Say on bench press, I just bench the bar without any weights, just to get used to the range of motion and such. Then I put on 35s. Then I put on 45s. Then 50s. 55s. etc.

Although one more thing, it's funny, back when I was in my "bodybuilding" emphasis days, I used to look at the mirrior and mentally circle areas I needed to work on, Small deltoids, wider back, bigger chest, etc. Kind of like a hazing from a sorority. haha. Arnold mentions this in the documentary "pumping iron" from the 70s. I'm not that vain anymore, but it helps too if you want specific workouts tailored to specific muscle groups. Nowadays I train for function, and my biggest motivator is being combat effective, because I really want to get a combat deployment still. Anyways, I gave oyu a giant wall of text. Lift well homie. And hit me up when you're in the bay. I can bring you to the coast guard gym for free.

    Marzo 2015
  • whatthefuckerik

Btw I didn't mention but the theory behind pairing muscle groups like back/biceps and chest/triceps is it divides it into "pulling" and "pushing" motions. Sorta. I've also since changed up my workouts. 6-8 reps used to be my standard, but I've been recently getting interested in researching powerlifting which emphasizes less reps but higher weight. I don't really care as much about how my body looks, and I find that people who get into fitness just for some vanity muscles or to "look good" tend not to stick to their plans. Having a more concrete goal like lifting certain numbers each week is easier to motivate IMO. I keep a notebook/notebook app on my phone specifically for writing down each workout I do. Then week to week I can see my progression, and I'll know that oh ok, I dumbbell pressed 70lbs last week, so I have to either match that, or go up.

http://www.muscleandfitness.com/workouts/workout-routines/4-week-guide-starting-strength Starting Strength is a great routine to get started on. Here's a pretty easy to follow guide. It's hard for me to explain over text but I definitely want to emphasize pushing yourself. When my buddy taught me to lift, i was naturally super competitive and wanted to keep up, and having a gym buddy there to motivate is a big help. Also, pushing yourself to the limit, especially with something like bench press is super dangerous alone without someone to spot you to make sure you don't decapitate yourself. What frustrates me about working out with marc sometimes is he never pushes himself to go heavy. Doing a bunch of reps with a 20lb dumbbell won't yield any results. But he's afraid of getting too "bulky" and stay lean, but therer's no such thing as "toning". Anyways, reddit's great too. /r/bodybuilding and /r/weightroom are great. /r/fitness sucks.
