Every week I'll do a 'original + cover'-journal.
(I'll try to make an eclectic choice of songs and covers)
Original: Serge Gainsbourg - Je Suis Venu Te Dire Que Je M'en Vais ('73)
I've chosen a live-version of this song, so you could know how Serge Gainsbourg sings his songs on stage: it's rather mumbling sometimes. This beautiful ballad is one of his best known songs.
Cover: Jo Lemaire - Je Suis Venue Te Dire Que Je M'en Vais ('81)
The Belgian chanteuse Jo Lemaire takes Gainsbourg's song to an electronic direction: synth-pop. Its sound is "darker" than the original, and Lemaire's voice accompagnies that sound very well. (it was a hit here in Belgium)
Original: Tim Rose - Morning Dew ('67)
An (apocalyptic) "folk rock" song. In the 60's, Tim Rose worked with artists including John Phillips and Cass Elliot (The Mamas & The Papas) and Scott McKenzie ("San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)")
Cover: Einstürzende Neubauten - Monring Dew
Einstürzende Neubauten succeed in making it even more "creepier" and darker. Frontman Blixa Bargeld uses his deep voice to murmur and in the end it "freaks out": it's like Gollum stepped into the studio and took over :)
Original: The Cure - A Forest ('80)
One of The Cure's most famous songs. (no explanation needed) :)
Cover: Nouvelle Vague - A Forest (2004)
The group Nouvelle Vague (specialised in covers) make a exotic version of the dark 'A Forest': now, it even contains jungle sounds. It's nice and summery.
