Singer/songwriter Matt Coughlin grew up in Belgrade, a small town in rural Montana. He grew up listening to the music his folksy parents played, including such pop heavyweights as Simon & Garfunkel and John Denver. Carrying his love of classic folk/rock music with him, Matt moved to Tacoma to attend Pacific Lutheran University to study jazz, classical and composition. During his time at university, he met Dalton Shotwell through choir and the two joined up to play music together: Matt doing the singing and songwriting and Dalton playing drums. After one of their gigs together in Tacoma, they were approached by Kim Coleman Fox, who was interested in bringing her talents in baroque violin to their group. Kim caught on immediately and brought with her an extra element to their sound from her time playing and traveling with folk bands in Hungary. The outfit was eventually joined by bass player Mitchell Vandenburg, who traded a six-pack of beer with a friend in order to get the audition to join the band. After just a hand full of rehearsals, the band was stage ready, and thus, Matt Coughlin and The Growlers was born.

As an ensemble, they have been playing together for a little over a year, touring mainly in the Pacific Northwest, with a much anticipated international performance in Ireland to come in November. They were the “artists in residence” at The Swiss Tavern in Tacoma in the summer of 2009.
