This year for me has been pretty decent, lots of releases I've enjoyed quite a lot. Here's my top 10 albums this year and a few EPs at the end which I feel also deserve a mention.

    Number 10 :-

A very worthy comeback since their last album if you ask me. Soundgarden are a band I have missed out on for many years and a good friend of mine introducing them to me properly is one of the best things to ever happen to me musically. I do feel that this album isn't as good as I'd hoped as the first three tracks are the ones that get me going most. However, it is still very enjoyable to listen to and I hope these guys carry on for many more years ahead.

    Number 9 :-

A brilliant follow up to Slash's debut album, using Myles Kennedy as the main vocalist was definitely the right thing to do. A very catchy album and very good to listen to when you're trying to chill out or something. Don't really know much else to say about it really, I just enjoy listening to it.

    Number 8 :-

Didn't live up to the album beforehand but nevertheless this album is pretty amazing. Definitely for those who are into the technical side of metal which is heavy as hell. Real admiration for this band having the lead guitarist also the vocalist, I hope to see them live at some point.

    Number 7 :-

Although I think the album cover is very bitmapped and cheap looking I enjoy this album a lot. The sludgey starter gets you very into the mood and then when it carries on to the lamb of god we all love and know there is just nothing to dislike. If you haven't heard this one yet, I recommend you do. Now.

    Number 6 :-

Brilliant band that deserves so much more attention. Their music is so fun and upbeat you just want to go crazy to it. At first I wasn't fond on this album at all, but I've listened to it over many times now and I now prefer it to their previous release. It has a more serious tone than their last (but not too serious!) and I feel the production on this one sounds better as it feels more raw rather than over produced.

    Number 5 :-

Been waiting a long time for Rush to make another release and they absolutely nailed it. They've never lost it through their career and I seriously can't wait to see them next year. It's safe to say they're a perfect band and anyone who hasn't listened to anything by them yet desperately needs to. There is a nice mix of soft and heavy on this album which Rush are masters of both.

    Number 4 :-

This band are very new to me but this album is easily one of my favourites of this year. The raw sludgey stoner tone is brilliant and the riffs just make you want to wet yourself. You have to admire what they're doing, especially due to the fact they're only a three piece. One of my favourite things about the album is the fact one of the songs has a dual between guitar solo and bass solo.

    Number 3 :-

Surprised at how amazing this live album turned out. Hearing all my favorite machine head songs this way was just mind blowing. Most of the songs were taken from the show local to me too, which due to laziness I unfortunately didn't attend. All machine head fans should get themselves a copy of this, it's definitely worth it!

    Number 2 :-

I've only heard this album all the way through a few times, simply because I loved it so much the first time I went and asked to get it for christmas. To me it sounded like the best material Stone Sour have released to date! It's a shame about Shawn leaving so suddenly and quietly considering he was a founding member but I guess they'll still manage. Really looking forward to hearing part 2 next year, especially if it's to these standards.

    NUMBER 1 :-

Without a doubt my favorite album of this year. I absolutely love this perfect mix of bad-ass thrash/speed metal combined with the good old hard rock sound in some areas. Mark is definitely one of my favorite guitarists of all time and this also proves what an amazing singer he turns out to be also! Everything about this album for me is perfect and I really want to hear the b-sides that didn't make it onto the album sometime soon. I did manage to see them live in October, one of the best shows I've seen to date.

Here are a few EP's that I feel are worthy of a mention that came out this year.

Althought I feel Down could have done this a bit better, it doesn't matter so much considering it's part 1 of 4. They have stuck to their true sabbath sounding sound which is what makes them awesome.

Revocation are a fine band with very talented musicians and the best thing about this EP was it was free on release! Nothing here would disappoint a thrash/death fan so I advise you go try see if it's still free so you can listen too!

This year has been quite difficult for choosing a top 10 but I managed to get one out there. Starting from 10 here it goes.

    Number 10:-

I first heard this band when a friend told me to check out their song Covering Fire. I thought it was pretty amazing and this band definitely deserve more attention. Great thrash metal, nice and fast and crazy. LISTEN IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY.

    Number 9:-

I've been a fan of Alestorm near enough since their first album was released and they seem to get better as they go along. They're not to be taken too seriously but they are still musically great and the themes to the songs are rather amusing. The certain cover at the end of this album cracks me up a bit, if you know what I mean.

    Number 8:-

A lot of people don't like this one because it's modern and no other reason. I think that's pretty pathetic as I actually listened to this album all the way through before judging it. I like it quite a bit, sure it's not their best work... no where near but it's nice and heavy and the band themselves told us all to be prepared for a modern metal sounding album. We got it.

    Number 7:-

A nice fresh new rock n' roll band. Nothing could go wrong with this. And it didn't. Can safely say I've been a fan from the beginning and had been stoked for this album for a fair amount of time. Great stuff.

    Number 6:-

One of my all time favourite bands, first heard them in 2007 and have seen them three times, upcoming fourth time. Can't get enough of them. This album didn't please me as much as I was hoping it would as it sounds a bit more mainstream but it is still very good and gets a lot of listens in my music library.

    Number 5:-

I love trivium's changing sound, despite what any other person says. This one isn't their best work but I love it as an album. At first I wasn't too sure about it myself but it quickly grew on me and has had many listens since I got it.

    Number 4:-

This year was the sad fairwell to this great underground band. I got my chance to see them when they supported alter bridge last year and I have to say this album is fantastic. Some may say it's generic but I love the heavy alternative rock sound it gives and always wanting to sing a long. I will miss these guys.

    Number 3:-

The 4 year wait was worth it. From start to finish this album keeps me hooked. Gotta love the Foo's. I can safely say this album is practically flawless and is great to listen to loud. Very loud.

    Number 2:-

Despite hating this album cover I think this album is awesome. One of my favourite bands for sure due to their unique combination of funk, punk, pop, hip-hop, metal, rock.. all of it! This album is more poppy than their last but I can listen from start to finish none stop and hate to be disturbed when doing so.

    Number 1:-

I can never get enough of this band. Perfect album. Album of the year for me. Without a doubt. Amazing musicians. So inspiring. I don't even know what to say, I feel I may burst into tears due to their amazingness. I think you get the idea.

    More honourable mentions:-
Nickelback - Here and Now (sue me, they're awesome)
Revoker - Revenge for the Ruthless
Sylosis - Edge of the Earth

No, I will not include the new Machine Head album. I love them as a band and I like that album... but it's really nothing compared to their last stuff and I'm rather bored of seeing them all over official album of the year lists. It's very short for Machine Head standards and a lot of the songs are in the same key as existing songs. It annoys me a bit. :/
