Lyrics Game #8 – Real Places

Um, well, I still haven’t progressed with the whole 1982 thing *embarrassed silence*….so here’s another Lyrics Game instead!

This time around all the song titles have place names in them (planets, countries, cities, towns and streets). They’re all the names of real locations…though the song writer may not have necessarily have had the real location in mind. You’ll see what I mean. Some of them may also use a colloquial or slang name for that place (for instance LA might be referred to as ‘The City of Angels’)

Nest time around I’ll do fictional places…..

Just a wee Lyrics Game to fill the gap as I finally get around to wrapping up 1982 and prepare to move on to 1983......

Each song title has either sun, moon or star in it. It seemed like a good idea but there weren't nearly as many sun/moon/star titled songs as I imagined, and it produced a very strange mixed bag.....

  • It's 1982!...all over again....

    Apr 30 2007, 14:00

    Yes, that's right, it's 1982!...all over again....

Kind of self explanatory really. Or perhaps not.

Well then, this is part two of my deranged plan to review my music collection year by year in an attempt to overcome the fact that I have too much music and too little time to really appreciate it, while also giving myself the rather odd opportunity to relive the 80s all over again – but as an older and (possibly) wiser person.

Originally I thought I’d do one year per week, but considering I started 1981 way back in December and am only now getting to 1982 in April….let’s just say the timetable is extremely flexible! So why, you may ask, is it taking so long (or more likely you’re actually asking yourself either why is she doing this at all, or why am I reading this tosh…). Well there were various other things that popped up since last December as I blabbed on about in the 1981 Review – but despite those it still takes a long time to organize – finding out the year’s releases and hits, updating that info on your music collection, buying songs you don’t actually have (I still can not believe I didn’t have Eye of the Tiger – oh, the shame), tagging the songs to create a 1982 Radio Station…and then discovering vinyl releases from 1982 lurking in your collection that need to be ripped and converted to MP3. That’s right, I’m anally retentive and tedious. Glad we got that out of the way. Anyway – still got the vinyl ripping phase to go – particular targets being Spandau Ballet's Diamond and Haircut 100's Pelican West (though more rummaging is still required…). The worst part though is the disappointment of not being able to track down songs you’re just dying to hear again after all these years – and sadly i-tunes has been unable to provide me with Icehouse's Great Southern Land, Moving Picture's What About Me and Goanna's Solid Rock - *sob*. I think What About Me is lurking on vinyl somewhere……so there's hope...

My recollections of 1982 as a 9 year old are mainly of a continuing fixation with “Choose Your Own Adventure” books, “Battle Of The Planets” and a musical diet consisting of tracks such as Eye of the Tiger, Abracadabra, Chariots of Fire and my sister playing endless amounts of the rather summery and tropical holiday sounding Haircut 100. Yep, it was a year filled with very dramatic dance routines, slow motion running and oodles of oversized chunky-knit cricket jumpers (funnily enough a look that would return with Then Jerico in 1987…….)

How will 1982 pan out this time around? Well this time I have my very own copy of “Abracadbra” so it’s going to the fecking fantastic………… (Um, yeah I am kinda serious about that). Of course I'll be spending a lot of time listening to established faves such as Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, bands I LOVED at the time but rarely listen to now such as Culture Club, bands I've only more recently gotten in to such as Ultravox, bands who I've liked for many years but of whom I only had later releases such as Simple Minds and Tears for Fears plus also throwing in a mix of popular hits and whatever else I've found lying around in my music collection

    OK, the plan is:

    * To listen to tracks from 1982 almost exclusively for the next week or two – if you’d like to – you can check out my list of 1982 songs. Even better have a listen to my 1982 Radio Station

    * Post a 1982 Lyrics Game in the next day or two. (There are still a couple of songs left to guess on the 1981 Lyrics Game )

    * In a couple of weeks time I’ll do a bit of a wrap up of the music 1982 and blab on with some opinions whilst producing dubious statistics and even dodgier graphs.

Please feel free to share your list of favourite songs of 1982 - and maybe even throw some listening suggestions my way! Then I'll move on to 1983 and do each year until the end of the 80s - when I will crown my ultimate year of the 80s!!

But in the meantime - Let 1982 begin, again!!

(To get an idea of the musical landscape in 1982 - check out Wikipedia’s 1982 in Music )

EDIT: 1982 Lyrics Quiz is up and running!

    Radio 1981

Relive the music of 1981 at

it might jog a few memories for the 1981 lyrics game, eh?

    Beginnings and Endings

1981 for me is a year marked by some pretty big endings and beginnings……..

The beginning of me buying my own music and the end of only listening to parents and sisters records (though not the end of their influence as I’m still listening to ABBA, Electric Light Orchestra, Supertramp, Village People etc etc)

The beginnings of the New Wave and the New Romantics as 1981 was the year that saw the first record releases by such luminaries as Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet - aaaaaaaaahhhhhh JOY!

The real tail end of the disco era as ABBA released their last studio album “The Visitors” in 1981, while the Village People felt the pressure of changing musical styles and tried to go all New Romantic with “Renaissance” (which by the way was anything BUT a renaissance for them) and the end in a way for punk with Stuart Adamson leaving The Skids (soon to emerge with the glorious Big Country) who then went all kind of folksy with songs like “Iona”, while The Clash were becoming increasingly commercial and radio friendly culminating in “Rock The Casbah” in 1982 (while I do like this song the fact that I can remember it being sung on “Young Talent Time” – a hideous youth troupe talent programme that spewed forth Dannii Minogue and Tina Arena – suggests an incredible low-point for The Clash”)

Oh, and of course it’s the beginning point of my musical journey – and if I ever get through the 80s, 90s and 00s and back to the 60s and 70s, it will eventually be the end point too…..(talk about wishful thinking!)

    So how does 1981 rate?

I didn’t actually hold out much hope for 1981 – and thought it would probably be fairly uninteresting and mostly uninspiring. Well, I was quite wrong. Now it’s only the start of the decade and I know that by the time I get to about 1986 (which I predict will be the winner of the title of “Greatest 80s Year”) and Scoundrel Days, Black Celebration, The Seer, Heyday, Notorious and True Confessions, I’ll probably look back and poo-poo 1981 – but for now it’s held up pretty well.

You’ll see in the lists below that I reconnected with some long-forgotten old favourites, and picked up a few new faves as well. I’ve also begun to listen to a few new artists and started to take a closer look at some of whom I only knew 1 or 2 songs. Plus I just got to revisit lots of material I hadn’t listened to that much in a long time – particualrly Speak And Spell Duran Duran and Journeys To Glory.

In the case of “Speak and Spell”, I’d had the album for a few years but I’d never really spent much time listening to it. After all it wasn’t ‘really’ Depeche Mode – more a Vince Clark project…… however I’ve really come to appreciate it. It’s certainly one of their worst albums – but then the Mode have so many great albums that it’s hard to compete. There are a few stinkers on there, a lot of alright to good stuff, and only a couple of 5-Star tracks but overall it’s all interesting at the very least for understanding and charting the development of the Mode.

And now to “Duran Duran”….. for me this is the greatest of all the Duran albums and one of only 7 albums I considered ‘flawless’ in a past journal survey: http://www.last.fm/user/Kattastic/journal/2006/06/17/158597/
I can’t speak highly enough of Duran’s debut album – 5 x 5-Star songs and 4 x 4-Star ones – and really the 4 star ones are only such as I just had to create some separation between the tracks. It’s moody, broody, atmospheric stuff – and while the singles are all really strong (especially “Careless Memories”), the album tracks are top notch too – “To The Shore”, “Anyone Out There”, “Night Boat” to name a few always inspire my imagination and play out mini movies and storylines in my head. If you don’t own it – buy it! If you haven’t listened to it for ages – then give it another listen. It’s one of the few albums I can listen to the whole way through, enjoy every song and feel like it’s over way too soon. All the tracks work really well together and just flow – so it’s a great one for putting on, turning the lights down, flopping down on the lounge or a bean bag and just soaking up they way you did when you were a teenager.

Finally, “Journeys To Glory”. Another great album – though not nearly as good as “Duran Duran” – but all 3,4 and 5-Star tracks. Having come to Spandau Ballet when they were fully into their poncy suits and their radio friendly, fairly easy-listening music jam packed with saxophone solos – I initially found “Journeys to Glory” a real shock as it’s just so different. And it’s a better different, believe me. While I still enjoy their later stuff like “Gold”, “True” and “Only When You Leave” – it seems decidedly sappy, wet and watered down compared to “Journeys To Glory”. Their debut is much harder, much more synth based and very much in the early New Romantic vein. Sometimes it does get a bit much – songs like “Musclebound” are a bit over the top and bordering on very comical, but “To Cut A Long Story Short” and “Reformation” are wonderfully dark and brooding while the largely instrumental “Age of Blows” is one to set the imagination off – and would have been great as an epic film soundtrack.
Overall there was a lot to enjoy from 1981 – as you’ll see from my charts further down….

    The Star Ratings…

To get an idea of how 1981 fared – and to try to compare it later to as I get through the other years of the 80s – I rated all the songs from 1981. Here’s the breakdown

    5 Stars – 14%
(totally awesome – LOVE IT! and listen all the way through it every time)
    4 Stars – 30%
(generally awesome – just not quite as great as the 5 star babies)
    3 Stars – 38%
(Like it quite a lot, pretty solid song, don’t get a huge urge to play it frequently)
    2 Stars – 13%
    (Alright but certainly nothing special)
    1 Star – 5%
    (Complete and utter rat shit)

    And now some silly graphs….

Greens and Blues are the goodies and are all go, Orange is getting ready to stop for it marks the end of my listening range and Red is stop cause it’s only dire stuff ahead

    and in pie form

Finally, with same strange calculations I ended up giving 1981 an overall mark of 67% - I guess that means it's 2/3's good. It doesn’t sound that high – but I guess I need a fair bit of scope for future years.

    Themes and Trends

Hmmm, perhaps a bit ambitious as frankly I can’t be bothered to really delve into this topic too much, however I did notice whilst listening to 1981 that apart from a lot of cheese and novelty kind of songs that there were three main ‘vibes’

    1. Oodles and oodles of broody, moody, dark and a wee bit menacing synth music most notably from from Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Visage, The Human League, Adam and The Ants and Echo and The Bunnymen, but also evident in other artists’ offerings

    2. A bit of a tropical summery feel evident in The Tide Is High, Aie A Mwana, It Aint What You Do and African And White.

    3. Lyrically there seems to be a bit of a fixation with art, acting and performamce?

“The visions are making me stay
The art is pretending its art”
    The Freeze

“She was silent trying to be
Like the girl who acted on the TV
    Always knowing when to say
Wishing for a moment so that they could see

    Staring in the night
    A picture in my room
And I think that she knew her lines”

“It's not far to never never land
    No reason to pretend”

“I see you, you see me
watch you blowin' the lines when you're making a scene”
    Private Eyes

    “Painting scenes from magazines”
    Passionate Reply

    “I’m walking into studio
    Consider strange appeal
    Paint me in the home
    I’m brushing up on sketchbook
    Designs for love unreal
    Paint me in the home
Oil and skin you’ll need to buy it
    Consider what I mean
She sinks beneath the moving pictures
    Prepare the brush for me
    I’m craving with this need”
    Paint Me Down

    “saw you in the picture
I saw you play the part
    This aint nodisco…..

    Part one act one
    Everyone pretend
    This aint nodisco

    This is more a story
    And were reaching the end
    This aint nodisco”

“Is this a love in disguise
Or just a form of modern art…..

I had a nightmare only yesterday
    You played a skeleton
You took my love then died that day
    I played an American”
    Tora! Tora! Tora!

    “Lying and waiting
A man in the dark in a picture frame
    So mystic and soulful”

Hmmm, must have been a bit of New Romantic preoccupation, eh? Wikipedia calls the New Romantics an “art-school based youth movement” – so perhaps that’s why?? That or with all the frilly costumes they wore they were particularly aware of role-playing?

    My Favourite Albums of 1981

OK, it’s only three I know – but I just don’t have that many entire albums from 1981. As the 80s progress the competition will get fiercer!

The 10 Best of the Cheesy Hits of 1981

1981 is a serious year for the cheese as music took a REALLY scary turn – that of the dodgy medley of covers all set to a relentless synthesised beat – anyone remember the “Hooked On Classics”? Or “Stars on 45” (also known as “Starsound”)? You probably wouldn’t want to – however I get a strange pleasure out of the musical massacres they produced. “Stars On 45” covered then cut and pasted together medleys of ABBA and Beatles songs amongst others, while even the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra couldn’t resist the allure of the trend and did the same to classical standards. Yes, it’s horrible – but like a car wreck, you can’t help but look! “Hooked On Classics” brings back many happy memories of playing the “Ghostbusters” pc game on the Apple IIC (some years later, that is….)

As Alan Partridge would say “smell my cheese”…….

    Making Your Mind Up
    Morning Train (9 to 5)
    Bad Habits

Part of reliving the 80s involves checking out the hit songs and major releases of the relevant year. One of the pleasant surprises is re-discovering songs you liked from that year – but which you kinda forgot about because they’re not in your collection (or they’re lurking somewhere in the old vinyl collection). After a quick visit to the i-tunes store I became the ‘proud’ owner of the following tracks from 1981…..

    Our Lips Are Sealed
    Kiss on My List
    Private Eyes
    Who Can It Be Now?
    Make A Move On Me
    Start Me Up

sadly I’ve been unable to find Japanese Boy……the search continues….

5 Few New Artists Being Appreciated

OK, the last three I was well aware of, but I’d never bought anything by them. The first two are all new – and for The Alarm I really must thank drche for the recommendation to listen to them. The Alarm’s “Unsound Building” is a real Celtic rock corker!

    The Alarm
    Echo & the Bunnymen
    Hall & Oates
    Thomas Dolby

    And finally...Song of the Year
A special mention for Jon & Vangelis' "I'll Find My Way Home" which just screams 1981 for me - not just because it's one of the first singles I ever bought but also because it always makes me think of of my first "Choose Your Own Adventure Book" - "The Cave of Time" - which I just adored. Lame song? Lame book? C'mon it was 1981 and I was 8!

    Bring on 1982!

  • Lyrics Game #5 - Directions

    Apr 12 2007, 4:33

OK, I know – my whole re-living the 80s thing seems to have ground to a halt – but when you add together Christmas + holiday planning + brother-in-law and girlfriend staying + husband's best friend, wife and child visiting + New Year + the other brother-in-law and his girlfriend staying + going for a month to the UK + getting home for a couple of weeks and trying to get life in order + a long weekend away wine tasting + time for enjoying copious wine purchases = very behind on 80s project!

So while I catch up, finish my review of 1981 and prepare for the joy of re-living 1982 – here’s a little lyrics game……

The theme of this one is directions – so all 50 songs have some kind of direction word in the title – such as North, South, East, West, Up, Down, Above, Below, Behind, Left and Right......

(btw I have no idea how Richard Marx snuck into my collection...otherwise it's a strangely representatve of my odd musical taste!)

(for a bit of bonus kudos lyrics #20 has a link of sorts to two other artists in this game - who are they?)

    1. Shooting stars in midnight pastures
And hanging out on clouds beneath the moon

    Down To Earth

    2. Wandering through the back roads
And the rain comes rushing down

    Everything must be this way

    Lie Down in Darkness

    my lust and my everything

and I'm screaming, don't bring me down

And the time has come to [title]

    Show some humility

    10. Forty winks in the lobby
    Make mine a G&T
    Then to my favourite hobby
    Searching for an enemy

I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me

    11. There she stood in the street
Smiling from her head to her feet
I said "Hey, what is this?"

  • Lyrics Game #4 - It's 1981!!

    Dic 5 2006, 11:21

OK - it's yet another lyrics game with a twist. This time round the songs featured were all released and/or in the charts in 1981.

The Lyrics Game Standard Blurb (plus paranoia):

Step 1: Open up whatever MP3 program you use
Step 2: Spend a f*cking eternity finding out what years songs were released and re-enter all the date information
Step 3: Make a playlist and shove everything you've labelled as being from 1981 in there
Step 4: Start doubting your dates and go and add in any songs which were released in 1980 but charted in 1981
Step 5: Start pulling your hair out over whether Step 4 was the way to go
Step 6: Slap yourself around the face and tell yourself to get a grip and stop being such a neurotic, anally retentive freak
Step 7: Perk self up by going and buying a bunch of tracks you like from 1981 but don't yet own from i-tunes
Step 8: Listen to new tracks joyfully and hurl into the 1981 playlist
Step 9: Have another panic about correct dating and then descend into a mini nervous breakdown when you realise you've spent so much time doing this that you forgot to tape The OC
Step 10: Realise not much really happens on The OC and crack on with the task at hand
Step 11: Put 1981 Playlist on party shuffle and type out the opening lines from the first 50 songs that play (unless they're instrumentals or you can't figure out what the hell the lyrics are and can't find them on the net either).
Step 12: Whack it all on your journal and invite virtual persons to have a guess at'em
Step 13: Cross out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 14: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING! Since I'm playing songs from 1981 for the next week or so, glancing at my recently played songs is not considered cheating, just a little crafty.

Why the 1981 fixation? Well it's all part of my celebration of the music of 1981 -

OK - here are the songs....

    1. I'm saying all the things that I know you'll like, making good conversation
I gotta handle you just right, you know what I mean

    2. Now that I know, why did I doubt ya?
I let you go, now I’m without ya

    3. (Title)
    Bleak and tired Western skies

  • It's 1981!...all over again....

    Dic 5 2006, 9:42

Like a lot of people I have too much music and too little time to really appreciate it. I spend a lot of time making up (increasingly bizare) playlists - but still I don't feel like I'm really getting to grips with it all. So, I devised yet another deranged plan - to review my collection year by year. My first idea was to start with 1973 - the year of my birth - but then I realised that 1981 was the year I bought my first single, with my own pocket money. A rather momentous occasion - and the two I recall buying were I'll Find My Way Home and It Must Be Love, which looking back were probably a rather strange selection for an 8 year old!

1981 was also a significant year as it was the year 3 of my favourite artists released their first albums - Duran Duran, Journeys To Glory and most crucially Speak And Spell. The only one I really was aware of and listening to at the time was the Duran Duran one (thanks to my older sister), and it was only some years later that I got the Spandau Balletone (in about '87) and the Depeche Mode one (at the end of the 90s). There are plenty of songs I enjoyed at the time - but many I came only to hear and enjoy much, much later. So by going back now and essentially re-experiencing 1981 (as it was) all over again, I hope to get a better sense of it all - to see 1981 as a whole.

Sadly Gracenote and similar services which provide the details of the CDs you rip to your pc only provide the date the particular CD was released - and with all the re-masters and greatest hits and re-issues etc, it takes a fair bit of time, research and effort even to attempt to allocate the correct year to a track. Then there is the issue of single vs. albums release - and release year vs. the year a song charted. I've mainly used wikipedia as a reference, along with details on CD sleeves - but I'm sure there are plenty of mistakes - so any pedantic types who see mistakes in my allocations - I'd be grateful for any corrections.

The plan is to listen to tracks from 1981 almost exclusively for the next week or so. I'm also going to post a 1981 Lyrics game soon. And then at the end of it all I'll do a bit of a wrap up of the music 1981 and blab on with some opinions. Along the way, if any poor soul reads this drivel, they should feel free to share their favourite songs of 1981 - and maybe even throw some listening suggestions my way! Then I'll move on to 1982 and do each year until the end of the 80s - when I will crown my ultimate year of the 80s!!

But in the meantime - Let 1981 begin, again!!

(To get an idea of the musical landscape in 1981 - check out the wikipedia page on music in 1981 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1981_in_music )

  • What Are Your Fan Rankings? The joys and SHOCKS of Firefox and Greasemonkey

    Set 4 2006, 8:49

OK I'm still aglow with the thrill following today's installation of Firefox, Greasemonkey and various scripts - notably Chart Changes, Blue Theme and Artist Fan Rank.

If you don't have these little extras - man, you should. They're great fun. Now I'm gonna have to wait a week to really enjoy the Chart Changes....however the Artist Fan Rank has kicked in already. It's quite a thrill as you watch each Band Name, then Song Name etc in your charts light up as the search starts..... OK I'm desperately sad and a complete loser - just put on a pair of thick glasses, pop a couple of pens in your top pocket and get into the zone , people. It's not my fault you're cooler than me! Embrace your inner dag and read on....

OK back to business - so what were the results?

Well for my top two artists Depeche Mode and a-ha I don't even rate a mention - but that's not unexpected....

    3. Big Country - #15 Fan
    5. Savoy - #21 Fan
    14. Boom Crash Opera - #7 Fan

Well it was all going well and then......

    15. Brother Beyond- #2 Fan

This is the point where I wondered if I should just kill myself immediately. I am the lastfm #2 Brother Beyond fan. There is no hope for me whatsoever. Ah well, fuck it - I love their album "Get Even". It captures what they were like before Stock Aitken Waterman came along and turned them into a chart friendly machine churning out crap like "The Harder I Try". Same thing SAW did to Bananarama after the glorious "True Confessions".

    18. Drum Theatre - #2 Fan
    24. Magne F - #9 Fan
    26. Then Jerico - #5 Fan
    29. The Skids - #32 Fan
    38. Kids in the Kitchen - #4 Fan
    53. Bridges - #12 Fan

After the top 60 it gets weirder. Hmmm, well overall I'm quite pleased with them - it certainly does highlight how deliriously obscure and 80s my tastes are. A warning should probably be put on my page though!

Well there are too many to detail.....and of course I've omited the Live Ones, Demos and Remixes and stuff - plus it's possible some of them are ones I have mistitled etc. Taking that into account it seems that I am:

    the #1 fan of

    The Crossing
    King Of Blue
