Lyrics Game #8 – Real Places

Um, well, I still haven’t progressed with the whole 1982 thing *embarrassed silence*….so here’s another Lyrics Game instead!

This time around all the song titles have place names in them (planets, countries, cities, towns and streets). They’re all the names of real locations…though the song writer may not have necessarily have had the real location in mind. You’ll see what I mean. Some of them may also use a colloquial or slang name for that place (for instance LA might be referred to as ‘The City of Angels’)

Nest time around I’ll do fictional places…..

The Lyrics

Oooooh, lovely - 39 correct guesses (even if one of them was Ean doing a sneaky double guess! :P ) So only 11 left now - but at least since I've finally updated the list, they are a bit easier to pick out.... @Sayuri - Well it's very fitting that you were first in, since I did do the lyrics quiz in response to your shout! @Tiggrrr - Would have been a crying shame if Khe Sanh hadn't been IDed - it is the unofficial Australian national anthem (though I can almost hear Sayuri's taunts about the national shame of my inability to ID INXS songs ringing in my ears) @alfvaen - A combie is a Volkswagen van thingy - the kind of beaten up old thing hippies and/or those travelling on a budget might have (also the kind of thing associated with touring the Australian outback and having an unpleasant encounter with a serial killer.....). Aaahh, yes Kokomo - had a few songs which uncomfortably straddled the line between fictional and real. Kokomo was one of those - as it was intended to me a 'made-up' place - though as you mentioned there is a Indiana town with the name - plus apparently there is an island with the name in Montego Bay (I know it's a bit sad - but I did Google a few song names before putting them in my playlist to be shuffled). There were a few others which weren't picked up in the shuffle - but again straddled the line - Midnight Oil's Bedlam Bridge, Martha and The Muffins' Echo Beach and Thomas Dolby's Cloudburst at Shingle Street. The Dolby song was apparently inspired by the real Shingle Street in Suffolk - but I'm not sure how much it relys on the location (if you see what I mean). It may be like the unguessed #15 which refers to a real location but presents it in a fictional manner..... Both the Midnight Oil and Martha and The Muffins songs were intended to be fantasy or fictional creations but do happen to share their names with real locations. So there are definitely some grey areas with the Real Places 'concept'.....even something like Duran Duran's Rio - real place, but refers to a woman.....

Well, that's less cluttered now, at least, so I can go through my collection and listen to likely songs... 21. Aztec Camera:Killermont Street 29. The Stranglers:Under The Name of Spain 34. Midnight Oil:Mountains of Burma 36. The Clash:The Guns of Brixton

BTW, a combie sounds like what I'd call a VW microbus. And as for shame on us for not getting the Cold Chisel song...well, I frankly had never heard of them up here in Canada before Kattastic's quizzes. Perhaps they just never crossed over. I suspect most of you'd have just as much trouble if I posted lyrics by The Grapes of Wrath or The Northern Pikes or 54-40 or Moxy Früvous, or any of numerous other bands from the Great White North. (No belligerence here, just an attempt to correct mispreconceptions...)

(after reading the Wikipedia article on Cold Chisel) Good lord, Jimmy Barnes was their lead singer? I've heard of him...and am now cured of wanting to listen to Cold Chisel, unfortunately, because his voice is one of the few that I find almost physically painful to listen to. (In fairness, I could never stand my own country's Barney Bentall either...)
