Another milestone - the first of this year - and it's an absolute classic from my "adopted homeland" (or "homeland-in-law" as I also call it). Tanel Padar & The Sun singing their hymn to their country Welcome to Estonia. Don't be fooled by the title, as only that phrase is in English, with the rest of the song in Estonian. It is, though, a cover of James Brown's "Livin' In America".

    And thus the leaderboards:

    Country of Origin:
    Norway - 3
    UK - 2
    Sweden - 1
    Germany - 1
    France - 1
    Turkey - 1
    Turkmenistan - 1
    Denmark - 1
    Iceland - 1
    Austria - 1
    Canada - 1
    Estonia - 1
    Australia - 0.5
    Jamaica - 0.5

    Language Family:

    No Language - 2
    Turkic - 2
    Romance - 1

First milestone in the new apartment, and it's Gordon Lightfoot with Summer Side Of Life. A classic exercise in irony, as either side of the track on his "Complete Greatest Hits" album are two of his most well-known tracks. Not that this isn't a famous one, mind you.
This represents the first Canadian entrant to the leaderboards, which now read thusly:

    Country of Origin:
    Norway - 3
    UK - 2
    Sweden - 1
    Germany - 1
    France - 1
    Turkey - 1
    Turkmenistan - 1
    Denmark - 1
    Iceland - 1
    Austria - 1
    Canada - 1
    Australia - 0.5
    Jamaica - 0.5

    Turkic - 2
    Romance - 1

This milestone has been reached, through Linton Kwesi Johnson and his track Street 66. While the language of origin is clear enough here, I'll score this as half a point for Jamaica and the UK each for national allegiance, as LKJ was born in the former and has strong roots there, while very clearly being part of the latter.

The leaderboards now look like this:
    Country of Origin:
    Norway - 3
    UK - 2
    Sweden - 1
    Germany - 1
    France - 1
    Turkey - 1
    Turkmenistan - 1
    Denmark - 1
    Iceland - 1
    Austria - 1
    Australia - 0.5
    Jamaica - 0.5

    Language Family:
    Germanic - 9
    No Language - 2
    Turkic - 2
    Romance - 1
  • 65000 tracks

    Ago 19 2012, 9:44

This auspicious number was reached today, courtesy of Ulver and I Love You, But I Prefer Trondheim (Parts 1-4), one of their remixed tracks from the "First Decade in the Machines" compilation. After some deliberation, I'll score this as a "No Language" entry, as there are no vocals on the track.

    The leaderboards, then:
    Country of Origin:
    Norway - 3
    UK - 1.5
    Sweden - 1
    Germany - 1
    France - 1
    Turkey - 1
    Turkmenistan - 1
    Denmark - 1
    Iceland - 1
    Austria - 1
    Australia - 0.5

    Language Family:
    Germanic - 8

  • 60000 tracks

    Mar 13 2012, 12:25

As I write, the 60000th track has just been played. This was Trackshittaz, with Oida Taunz. Just in time for Eurovision 2012, where they'll follow up that wonderful national final entry with some of their trademark obnoxious party rap. I'll treat the lyrics as "German" for leaderboard purposes, as "Mühlvierlerisch" sounds unfair.

    The leaderboards, then:
    Country of Origin:
    Norway - 2
    UK - 1.5
    Sweden - 1
    Germany - 1
    France - 1
    Turkey - 1
    Turkmenistan - 1
    Denmark - 1
    Iceland - 1
    Austria
    Australia - 0.5

    Language Family:

  • 55000 tracks

    Lug 30 2011, 23:51

On July 31, we broke the 55000 barrier with yet another Nordic entry. This time it was an Icelandic artist, Sigur Rós with Starálfur, specifically the acoustic version of that stunning song. This is a rather apt milestone track, and not only because of a holiday to Iceland coming up, but also because when I joined LastFM I felt that Sigur Rós was very overrated, but they've now become one of my favourite artists.

    The leaderboards, then:
    Country of Origin:
    Norway - 2
    UK - 1.5
    Sweden - 1
    Germany - 1
    France - 1
    Turkey - 1

    Mar 11 2011, 23:27

The 50000 track barrier was crossed on February 25. This time it was Nephew with Police Bells And Church Sirens, a recent obsession of mine. It was thus the turn of yet another Nordic country to enter the leaderboard, as Nephew hail from Denmark.

    So to the leaderboards:
    Country of Origin:
    Norway - 2
    UK - 1.5
    Sweden - 1
    Germany - 1
    France - 1
    Turkey - 1

  • 45000 Tracks

    Set 29 2010, 22:26

Yesterday, September 29, saw track 45000 hit the playcounter. In light of the events of this year, it would be difficult for it not to have been: Madcon with Glow, that wonderful song which inspired probably the best interval act Eurovision will ever see.

    And so to the leaderboards:
    Country of Origin:
    Norway - 2
    UK - 1.5
    Sweden - 1
    Germany - 1
    France - 1
    Turkey - 1

  • 40000 Tracks

    Mag 14 2010, 8:53

Track number 40000 has been reached on May 14, 2010, and what an auspicious track it was - Alexander Rybak with the incredible Fairytale, the winner of Eurovision 2009 and easily one of the greatest songs ever to grace the stage at that event.

    The leaderboard now:
    Country of Origin:
    UK - 1.5
    Sweden - 1
    Germany - 1
    France - 1
    Turkey - 1
    Turkmenistan - 1
    Norway - 1
    Australia - 0.5

  • 35000 Tracks

    Ott 11 2009, 5:31

Track 35000 was Gilbert & Sullivan with I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General on October 11.

We now have our first milestone track recorded in English by Anglophone performers, as well as being the first one where the composer and lyricist didn't actually perform on the track at all - G&S being authors of operettas.

    So to the scoreboard:
    Country of Origin:
    UK - 1.5
    Sweden - 1
    Germany - 1
    France - 1
    Turkey - 1
    Turkmenistan - 1
    Australia - 0.5

    Language Family:
    Germanic - 3
    Turkic - 2
