Eljött megint a nagy összegzések ideje, és mivel évről-évre azzal szembesülök, hogy a nevesebb metal (web) magazinok listái gyakorlatilag köszönőviszonyban sincsenek az általam legjobbnak vélt anyagokkal, úgy döntöttem néhány sorban ideje megemlékezni 2010 számomra kiemelkedő munkáiról. Íme:

So, here we are again at the big sum of the year. Every single year I must face that the renowned - mostly of course hungarian - (web) magazines' lists have absolutely nothing to do with my favourites, so I decided to this is the right time to have a little remembrance about my beloved albums of 2010. Here it is:

1. Rotting Christ - Aealo

Mikor év elején egy szuszra kijött az új Troll, Dark Fortress és Rotting Christ album már sejtettem, hogy az idei esztendő elsősorban a black metal éve lesz, arra pedig már februárban esküdni mertem volna, hogy az Aealo előkelő helyen fog díszelegni az év végi listámon. Az (egyébként nem kevésbé zseniális) Theogonia album után Sakis-ék megint mocskosul odatették magukat, a végtermék pedig valami egészen lenyűgöző atmoszférába rántó csoda lett. A vokál, a riffek, a keleties hatások és kórusok, a hangzás, illetve maga a korong esztétikája egész egyszerűen a tökéletesség szinonimája, nem beszélve az olyan dalokról, mint a dallamosságával megkapó Demonon Vrosis, vagy a pusztító Santa Muerte. Mindemellett a digipack kiadáshoz járó WFF feszten rögzített bónusz DVD törzsanyaga megintcsak egy külön élmény. Mindezt már csak egy hazai koncerttel lehetett tovább fokozni, ami decemberben be is következett, nem akármilyen emlékeket hagyva hátra maga után. Semmi kétség, a görög "istenek" elkészítették az év lemezét.

When the new Troll, Dark Fortress and Rotting Christ albums had released in the beginning of the year, I already knew, that this will be the year of black metal masterpieces and I also could bet that Aealo will be in a pretty nice position on my year-end list. The vocals, the riffs, the strong oriental influences and choirs, the sound and even the artwork are simply the synonyms of perfection, and I didn't mentioned yet these songs like the melodic and incredibly catchy Demonon Vrosis or the destructive Santa Muerte. Besides these, the digipack version of the release is includes a short, but mindblowing concert of the band's performance on WFF festival, which is also a nice complement of this stuff. There is only one thing, what could’ve made me more satisfied. Of course, a hungarian show, which was already become in December and after that (as you can see on the video), it left some really unforgetable memories behind. There's no doubt, the greek "gods" made the album of the year.

2. UnSun - Clinic For Dolls

Legutóbbi The End Of Life c. debütjével ugyan már kilóra megvett magának Anna és Mauser, arra viszont messze nem számítottam, hogy legközelebb még ennél is jobban belebolondulok majd a zenéjükbe, mégis ez történt, a Clinic For Dolls ugyanis egy pofátlanul tökéletes gothic mestermű. Anno a webzine-es időkben volt akkora mázlim, hogy sikerült elhappolnom a cuccot még a hivatalos megjelenés előtt, így nekem jutott az a hálás feladat, hogy egekbe magasztalhattam a csapatot, és remélhetőleg legalább az olvasók egy szűk rétegénél sikerült elérnem, hogy bizalmat szavazzanak a lemeznek. Akkor is és most is elmondom: egyszerűen nincs Achilles-ínja a korongnak, minden szám fogós, döngölős, gyönyörű énekkel felvértezett profi munka. Jövőre remélhetőleg az MFVF-en hozzájuk is lesz szerencsém élőben.

Last time, Anna and Mauser bought me as I buy a bottle of beer, but I didn't expected that next time I will be more crazy about their music, although that had happened, because Clinic For Dolls is a cheeky perfect gothic masterpiece. When I was working for a hungarian webzine, I had such luck, that I got this stuff before the official release date, so I had that pleasant task to say some kind words about the group and I can hope only that a little side of our readers were give a chance for this gem. I said, and I say it now, too, that this album haven't got any weak parts. Every song is damn catchy, grinding, with Aya's typical adorable, sexy, beautiful voice, a seriously professional work. I'm looking forward to see them live next year on MFVF.

3. Carach Angren - Death Came Through A Phantom Ship

A Carach Angren-nek, mint a szimfónikus black metal messiásának már csak elvből is illendő volna helyet szorítani az év végi toplistákon, mivel a hollandok (ha szabad ilyet mondani 2010-ben) szinte teljesen átértelmezték a stílust a maguk sajátos "black metal operájával". Annak ellenére, hogy a Lammendam sok (szerintem) felületes hallgató szemében nem volt több egy Dimmu kópiánál, már azon az anyagon is lehetett érezni azt a sajátosan hátborzongató hangulatot, ami a Phantom Ship-en igazán kiteljesedett. Az egész hihetetlenül fílinges darálás, ügyes szövegi és zenei(!) koncepcióval, tökéletes körítéssel - ennek fényében pedig megmondom őszintén, az sem érdekel, ha egyes momentumokban valóban tetten érhető a norvégok munkássága.

Carach Angren, as the messiah of symphonic black metal, should have a certain position on every year-end list, only based on theorem, because the dutch hunters refreshed the complete scene with their unique "black metal opera". Against that many flighty listener's eyes Lammendam was only a cheap copy of Dimmu Borgir, I already felt a unique scary atmosphere, which is in Phantom Ship had been more conscious and cleared, than on the previous stuff. The whole stuff is incredibly atmospheric grinding with great and creative lyrics and musical conception, plus the dressing is perfect, too. With these skills, I can say honestly that I don't give a fuck, if they really have some influences of the Norwegians.

4. Dark Fortress - Ylem

Minden jelöltem közül a Ylem-hez közelítettem a legszkeptikusabban, Dark Fortress-ék eggyel korábbi albuma ugyanis akkoriban nem nőtt annyira a szívemhez, mint amekkora reményeket fektettem belé, így leginkább a kíváncsiság volt az, ami mégis arra késztetett, hogy megfüleljem az új anyagot. Ezt követően aztán hamar rájöttem, hogy hamis kép élt bennem a srácokról. Az idei cucc valami félelmetesen hangulatos, kísérletezéstől sem mentes (lásd ugye a záró triót), ugyanakkor rendkívül összeszedett csomag lett, olyan csúcspontokkal, mint az Osiris, az éjszaka közepén bambulva éneklős Evenfall vagy az apokaliptikus „über gonosz sláger” a Hirudineans. Annak viszont, hogy a németek lemeze a negyedik helyen landolt a listámon, megvan az a furcsa iróniája, hogy egyúttal megverték a Dimmu Abrahadabra-ját, és mint tudjuk a Dimmu Borgir angol fordítása a Dark Fortress, így helyénvaló elsütnöm azt a frázist, hogy a tanítvány a mester fölé nőtt – 2010-ben legalábbis.

From all of my nominees, Ylem was the more sceptical to me, because the previous album of Dark Fortress didn't really succeed my expectations, so I gave a chance for the new record mostly from curiosity. After that, I soon realized, that I've got a wrong image about these guys. This year's stuff is something seriously killer, professional and a bit experimenting (as we can hear in the last three songs) work, with those highlights like Osiris, the lonely night singing Evenfall or the "giant evil hit" Hirudineans. The situation that the German's disc landed on my fourth position have the interesting irony, that they had beaten-down Dimmu's Abrahadabra, although their name exactly mean Dimmu Borgir. So, we can say that the apprentice grew upon his master - at least in 2010.

5. Keep Of Kalessin - Reptilian

A Csihar Attila-s Reclaim EP óta Obsidian C. és a maga köré gyűjtött bagázst már messze nem a "trve" csapatok közt tartja számon a közvélemény, én mégis azt hiszem, a KoK pont azóta, Thebon érkeztével és az Armada-val alkotta meg azt a sajátos zenei világot, amiben azóta is utazik a gárda. Az említett lemez még jó visszhangokat kapott, aztán amennyire én olvastam, a Kolossus már hűvösebb fogadtatásban részesült, pedig az én szememben egyértelmű előrelépés volt a két évvel ezelőtti cucc epikussága. Noha az euróvíziós fellépésen megszellőztetett The Dragontower megint csak nem aratott osztatlan sikert a rajongók körében, szerintem az idei Reptilian-ra valahogy sikerült egymásba olvasztani az előző két anyag sajátosságait, így a dalok egyszerre súlyosak és epikusak, a hangzás pedig hosszú idők óta az egyik legtökéletesebb, amit hallottam.

Since the Reclaim EP, Obsidian C. and his group are no longer in the gang of "trve" black metal bands, but I think with Thebon and the arrival of Armada, KoK had created their own unique musical world. The already mentioned album got good feedbacks, but as far as I know (and based on the hungarian media), Kolossus only had average reviews and colder welcome, although Kolossus' epicness was clearly a step forward in my eyes. Furthermore, on the Eurovision performance leaked song, The Dragontower hadn't become the new favorite of most of the fans, I think that Reptilian is the perfect hybrid of the last two albums. The songs are simultaneously heavy and epic, and the sound is one of the best I heared since a long time.

6. Dimmu Borgir - Abrahadabra

Hatalmas Dimmu fanatikusként még nekem is meglepő, hogy csak a hatodik helyen említem a norvégokat, de az az igazság, hogy az idei black termés annyira ütősre sikeredett, hogy ennyire volt elég a tagcserék utáni visszatérés. Sokaknak hiányzik ICS Vortex hangja és Mustis billentyű témái, de részemről előbbi hiánya egyáltalán nem, utóbbi pedig csak nyomokban hiányzik vagy egyáltalán tűnik fel. Lényeg a lényeg, a lemez most is kellően Dimmu-s, komor és emlékezetes nóták is akadnak bőven (Gateways ugye, hogy csak a klipeset említsem), nincs tehát itt semmiféle összeomlás-világégés - extrém metal berkeken belül ez még mindig jó cucc, annak ellenére, hogy halál biztos vagyok benne, hogy lesz még ennél sokkal letaglózobb albuma is Shagrath-ék új felállásának. A női ének viszont tartósan is megragadhatna a zenében, mert Agnete Maria Forfang Kjølsrud hangja remekül passzol a Dimmu atmoszférájába.

As a big Dimmu fan, it's a surprise for me that their return with the new line-up is only enough for the sixth position, but the truth is that this year was weirdly strong in black metal. A lot of people are missing ICS Vortex's cleans and Mustis' keyboard themes, but to be honest, I haven't got any lack about it, except in a few little parts. What is important, that the music is pure Dimmu as its best. There are morose and memorable songs (yeah, just think about Gateways), so, there's no any doomsday or apocalypse in the being of the band, but I'm deathly sure about that this changed line-up will make far better album(s) in the future. Oh, and by the way, the female vocal should stay in their music, because Agnete Maria Forfang Kjølsrud's voice is perfectly fits with DB's atmosphere.

7. Finntroll - Nifelvind

Sokáig a tízbe sem akartam nevezni az új Finntroll anyagot, miután első pár hallgatásra odáig jutottam, hogy "jó-jó, de azért nem egy Nattfödd". Aztán jött a Rotting Christ-al közös Wigwam-es, akarom mondani Club 202-es buli, ami amellett, hogy a négy közül messze a legjobb Finntroll koncertem volt, meggyőzött, hogy kicsit nyüstöljem még itthon a Nifelvind-et, mert nem csak a Solsagan az egyetlen említésre szám a korongon. A két kezdeti kedvencem (az említett klipes dal és az I Trädens Sång) mellett aztán egyre inkább elnyerte a tetszésemet szinte az összes tétel, különösen az Ett Norrskensdåd és a záró Dråp, sőt még az eleinte kimondottan szálkának tartott Den Frusna Munnen-el is megbarátkoztam, a trollok albuma pedig ezáltal a hetedik helyig felkapaszkodott a legjobbak közé.

For a long time, I didn't even want to nominee the new Finntroll release, because after the first few listens I only can said that: "Good, good, but not as much as Nattföddwas". Then comes their hungarian show with Rotting Christ in Club 202, and besides that, that was my best Finntroll concert from the last four times, they convinced me to give some more listen to Nifelvind, because not Solsagan is the only worthwhile song on the disc. Besides my first two favorites (the mentioned Solsagan and I Trädens Sång), I started to like the whole record, especially Ett Norrskensdåd and the closing Dråp, even the long time hated Den Frusna Munnen. After that, the trolls took the seventh point on my list.

8. Varg - Blutaar

A Varg létezéséről egészen a Blutaar album megjelenéséig fogalmam sem volt, mivel az efféle pogány black hordákról mai napig az az általános meggyőződésem, hogy a metal színtér legszürkébb munkáit képesek elkészíteni. Kivételek persze mindig vannak, a Varg pedig határozottan közéjük tartozik. Ami a leginkább megfogott bennük, az a hihetetlen őszinteség, a hitelesség, az a rengeteg érzés és alázat, ahogyan ezt a típusú zenét játsszák egészen egyedülálló és példátlan, nem pusztán lemezen, de élőben is egyaránt. Idén erről két ízben is meggyőződhettem, egyszer a Metalfest-en, másodszor pedig az egészen fantasztikus Rockmaraton-os fellépésük alkalmával. Jövőre folytatás Paganfest-en!

Until the release date of Blutaar, I didn't know anything about the German pagans. The reason why, that my usual experiences about the pagan black bands is that, a big part of them can make the most boring music ever in the history of metal. Of course, there are some exceptions, and Varg unambiguously one of them. The most magnetic thing in them is their incredible honest, authentic attitude, with many feelings and humility. How they're playing this kind of music, it's truely remarkable, not only on disc but even on the live shows, too. I could make sure about that first time on Metalfest Hungary and secondly on Rockmaraton. Looking forward to Paganfest!

9. Gorgonea Prima - Black Coal Depression

A cseh csapatról akkor hallottam először, mikor a Gorgoroth turné prágai állomásán előzenekarként léptek fel a norvégok előtt, a black metal és az indusztrial hibátlan keveréke azonban hamar megfogott, pedig alapjáraton az elektronikus zenék terén kimondottan válagatós vagyok, kisebb csoda tehát, hogy ilyen stílusban is sikerült végre kedvencet avatnom. A lemezt amúgy eredetiben nem kis tortúra beszerezni, mivel itthon nem forgalmazzák, így az egyetlen járható út, a Naga honlapjáról való megrendelés, kárpótlásként viszont hibátlan minőségben döröghet a hifiben az apokalipszis bekövetkeztét sejtető Corroded Landscape, vagy az erőteljesebb elektronikával tűzdelt Blast Furnace és Digital Desire.

First time I heared about the czech group was before on the Gorgoroth concert, as a support band in Prague. Their mix of black and industrial is perfectly fits for me, although I can be very choosy, when we're talking about electronic music. So, it's a smaller miracle, that I finally found my favorite in this genre. Anyway, from Hungary it's really hard to get this stuff, because there's no anyone, who turnover this industrial masterpiece, so the only way is to order from Naga's website. But it's totally worth it, because of songs like the apocalyptic Corroded Landscape (check the video) or the sharper electronic influenced Blast Furnace and Digital Desire.

10. Eluveitie - Everything Remains As It Never Was

2008 óta minden évben a listámra kerül az éppen aktuális Eluveitie kiadvány. Idén sincs ez másképp, hisz nagy kedvencem a gárda, még ha ezúttal csak a végére böktem is ide a folk svájci úttörőinek idei lemezét. Igazság szerint a minőséget, a dalok tökéletességét és a hangulatot alapul véve jóval feljebb lenne helye az Everything Remains-nek, de idén sajnos egyéb külsős okokból kifolyólag most részemről ennyire futotta Chrigel-ékkel kapcsolatban.

Since 2008, Eluveitie's current record surely have its safe place on my year-end lists. They're one of my largest favorites, even if I only stab the folk metal's swiss masters now at the end of the list. If I only count the quality and the perfection of the songs, Everything Remains should end in much higher position, but unfortunately this year I've got some touchy personal connections with this record, so it's my idiocy, they deserve more!
