Congrats on getting married Col, definitely worth missing a few nights out for! I bet the reception will have GREAT music!! In fact I went to my cousin's wedding a couple of months back too, he's a long-standing soulboy like yourself and veteran of the old soul nighters, and the music was wall to wall Northern the whole night, with a bit of Tamla and R&B to appease the non-diehards for the first hour or two! He even DJed himself for a few numbers. I got married myself fairly recently too, now we're expecting our first baby! It all seems to happen so quickly, think I'm making up for lost time and a slightly wasted youth!

Got into the Northern scene aged 14 first went to Wigan Casino aged 15 and many times after that , been to various venues up and down the country including the likes of The Ritz (Manchester) , Morecambe Pier , Carleton Inn , King Georges Hall (Blackburn) , Cleethorpes etc , loved it for the past 39 years and hopefully for many more to come ........Cheers.....KTF !

In the early hours of a September morning
in 1973, a huge World War 1 building tenta-
tively opend its doors to the cult followers
of an underground dance scene.
The unfashionable Casino Club
was opened for business for the first-ever
Northern Soul all-nighter.
Little could the promoters have
realized the phenomenon they were creat-
ing - a phenomenon that would put Wigan
and the Casino on the map, not only across
the length and breadth of Britain but also in
Europe and America.
For eight years the Wigan Casino
all-night Northern soul sessions achieved
fame, notoriety and, eventually, legendary
status among youngsters all over Britain. It
was loved by each of its 100,000 members,
voted the world's best disco by the
American-based magazine Billboard and
started its own record label and magazine.
Its DJs unearthed rare 1960s American
soul recordings and launched them into the
national pop charts, reviving the careers of
many black artists. Northern Soul was the
youth cult of the 1970s and still is a major
influence on many artists recording today.

"What was it like in the Wigan Casino?"

"Wigan was open every Saturday night. It was like
you were dancing in a red hot furnace. The place
stank of sweat and stale Brut aftershave.

It was a scruffy place with bits of plaster and
nicotine droplets falling from the ceiling. If you
sat and watched the feet of the dancers moving,
you would see small clouds of talcum powder
bouncing off the sprung - loaded floor."

Words from "Searching for Soul" by Reg Stickings.

"Northern Soul"
What began as an underground 60s Mod
scene in unlicensed, no-frills clubs in the
North West of England became a youth
craze that has long surpassed all others.
The Northern Soul scene has confounded
its critics by surviving and growing into an
adult dance phenomenon whose followers
share a passion for the music of Black
America unrivalled anywhere else in the
world. From the Twisted Wheel in Manchester
to the mighty Wigan Casino, the story of Northern
Soul is a definitive history of a dance scene
that refuses to die.
