• Wu-Tang Clan bestätigt Auftritt beim MTV HipHop Open

    Mag 1 2007, 10:37

  • Killah Priest: The Offering will not leave on Babygrande

    Mar 4 2007, 22:53

    English:
In its last bulletin on its myspace, Killah Priest announces that the deal with Babygrande will not take place for financial reasons, the label wanting to keep too most of the cake, it announces besides: << better a deal with my pal Dreddy Kruger for Wu-Meets Indies Culture whereas it was its first album, it I proposed misses Them respect… I will not give them my album>>

The Offering will thus not leave on March 27 as envisaged but Masada announces its exit for May, it currently seeks the perfect deal for the album.

To finish it also stated that RZA had required of him to join it in studio, perhaps to include it with the casting of 8 Diagrams…

  • Nature Sounds Presents - Natural Selection 2.0

    Feb 7 2007, 22:40

Nature Sounds is probably my favourite record label no one knows about. Aside from the DOOM Special Herbs collection, and the last glimpse of non Ghost “real Wu-tang shit” by way of Masta Killa and Mathematics, this label still has yet to make the Def Jux or Rhymesayers sized movement. Last May I had the pleasure of discussing Natural Selection, the labels first big compilation. And a mere 8 months later (in true independent form) I’m treated to the sequel; aptly named Natural Selection 2.0

The legendary Pete Rock shows up once again to engineer the track for 914, on which Styles P and Sheek set the East Coast tone for the rest of the LP. I may just be grasping, but had Jada showed up on this joint, the NY feel of this track would’ve been front page material considering how weak things seem to be over there. R.A. The Rugged Man was rightfully the 2006 winner of DX’s verse of the year, and while staking him as a 2007 candidate for his bars on Super may be premature, no one (I repeat, no one) can churn out rhymes like Rugged Man.

Where the first Natural Selection was ruled by the DOOM and Ghostface collaborated Angels, this time around the album standout is Project Jazz. Starks is an absentee this record but you can’t really be mad at DOOM for recruiting Talib Kweli & Hell Razah instead. Do whatever you can to get on this track because it’s just that dope.

For the most part, Natural Selection 2.0 isn’t all that different from its predecessor, but there are two key features this time around that put it on a slightly higher level. The first is the strong presence of DJ Babu and the appearance of Little Brother. With Fan Mail, LB comes on point as always and Joe Scudda more than keeps up with what will probably be on my personal top 2007 list of beats.

This record isn’t all East coast however, as Defari shows up on another monster Babu produced Truth Be Told. Where the West Coast presence on the first LP bothered the flow of the very East Coast record, Defari blends a little better than Xzibit and the Strong Arm Steady crew did last time.

The aforementioned “Wu-Tang shit” is the other big factor separating 2.0 from 1. Raekwon, Mastah Killa, Deck, U-God and GZA show up with the help of Mathematics for a handful of tracks and the most Shaolin Style we’ve seen in years. Again it would have been nice to see Ghost’s and Meth’s names attached to this (and RZA of course), but I’ll take what I can get.

What we get at the end of everything is yet another dope release from the Nature Sounds team. Since the first Natural Selection LP was my first ever piece for DX, I remember wondering why there were never any comments on the record. This time around, it’ll still bother me if no one has shit to say on Natural Selection 2.0 but it won’t be because I wrote the piece. I’ll be wondering why the fuck no one’s listening to such a dope record.
  • Beat Kings - Respect The Architect

    Feb 7 2007, 22:37

"In order to even speak on hip-hop you need to know the history of the beat." - DJ Premier

Beat Kings is an in depth documentary about hip hop producers spear-headed by longtime Wu-Tang Clan Producer/DJ Mathematics. Beat Kings chronicles the history of beatmaking from the days of Afrika Bambatta to Marley Marl to modern day greats like Kanye West. Tapping a who's who in hip hop music, Beat Kings get the first hand accounts of the equitment they use, how they learned to make beats, and anything else a budding producer or hip hop fan would want to know. The DVD features in the studio interviews with Kanye West, Just Blaze, Havoc (Mobb Deep), Trackmasters, Swiss Beats, RZA, Premier, Pete Rock, Marley Marl, Alchemist, Easy Moe Bee, Prince Paul and more. These producers are the architects behind the rhymes of superstars like Jay-Z, Notorious BIG, 50 Cent, Nas, The Wu-tang Clan and now anyone can learn how they do it.
  • Mathematics Presents - Wu-Tang & Friends Unreleased

    Feb 7 2007, 21:58

While the Wu-Tang Clan still stand as arguably the best hip-hop group of all time, heads still wish they'd further cement their legacy. Clansmen like Ghostface Killah and GZA continue to release quality albums, and uber-producer RZA has expanded his soundscapes to film scores, but all members unifying for group efforts is as rare as a
Haley's Comet sighting. However, coinciding with recent news of the group's impending 8 Diagrams album coming soon, Clan producer Mathematics releases Wu-Tang Clan & Friends: Unreleased, a digital only release from The Orchard of remixes and leftovers he produced for the group and its cohorts over the years.
If anything, Unreleased is a testament to the knob twisting skills of Mathematics. With a career of being in the shadow of the almighty RZA—voluntarily or otherwise—Mathematics seems excited for the opportunity to showcase his talents on a project that may garner more initial attention than one of his solo albums. Each of the disc's beats knock with the Wu-Tang Clan's signature blend of harmonious melodies, dungenous sound effects and stripped percussion style. It is really no surprise though, over the years as RZA has often experimented with some “other shit,” Math has stayed closer to the Wu-Tang sound.
Treez sees Raekwon spitting street tales over minimalistic keys and snares, and Rap Burglars sounds like it's straight from the cutting room floor of Enter The 36 Chambers with its murky keys and vicious verses from Rae and Inspectah Deck. While remixes of classics Wu Banga and Maxine don't trump the originals, they still shine with their fresh interpolations by a member of the crew. Wu Banga is especially dope though, basically blending the original posse cut from Ghost’s Supreme Clientele with Brand Nubian’s classic Step To The Rear from One For All. Where Brooklyn At? May sound familiar to some of you as well as Mathematics flips the same sample that E-Swift did for Tha Alkaholiks 2014 from Coast II Coast.
Unfortunately, the Clan's core members don't make enough unheard appearances on the disc. Too many songs give unwarranted shine to no-name Wu affiliates who can't hold their own weight, despite capable soundscapes by Mathematics. Ie. too many friends, not enough Wu. Three skits are also scattered throughout the album's 20 tracks; while they're presumably added to provide the feel of an album, they come off as contrived and useless. Still, Unreleased does a great job of showcasing an underrated Wu-Tang beatsmith and building anticipation for the group's upcoming efforts.
