A Silver Mnt. in the Field of Zion Music

Sun 25 Apr – A Silver Mt. Zion
Sun 25 Apr – Field Music

It was some time ago that Coach Bertels saw the A Silver Mnt. Zion gig in Coach Webber’s event list, a real good band that is famous for their great gigs! For some time the event loomed in Bertels his mind and then finally it was pushed out by alcohol. Until one evening Paulus send Coach a text message saying that he was looking for folks to come along to the A Silver Mnt. Zion gig in Paradiso the next day! Well be darned, Coach thought! The show is scheduled for the small room and this is public knowledge for several months already, so it should be sold out by now.. Bertels checked out the Paradiso website and found some tickets left, amazing! Coach Bertels called Coach Webber to come along, but Coach Webber disappointed Coach Bertels, claiming to have an other appointment scheduled already. So Bertels contacted Paulus that it was OK, and that there would be a meet up at Central Station around five o clock the next day. The sun set and rose, and Bertels rose along with the golden ball in the east to start the new Sun-day with a fresh perspective. Doing the laundry, internet and a little stroll through Bertels Cube made the time float away real quick. At four thirty Coach left his save hideout and went to Central Station, got a few canned drinks from the supermarket, some paper from the ATM and refilled the OV-Chip card. Waiting for Paulus and the 071 entourage, Bertels sat down on a chair and had a great overview on what was going on. Suddenly Coach spotted Paulus and his gang: Dickies, Marloes and Graig (better known as Oldseed). Bertels met up with them and soon all agreed to have some beers for the train ride to the Capitol, so Coach went back to the supermarket and bought a six pack for the rail road. During the train ride Coach had an interesting conversation with Graig about Berlin, a great city in the east of Germany. Being a touring musician, Graig travels a lot and stays in Berlin quite often. The perfect opportunity for Bertels to ask him what the really good places are in the city. There are no real good places, he said, all places are good with that free, open and respectful atmosphere. That’s just nice, Coach thought, can’t make mistakes in Berlin! Coach also took notes on bands that might be awesome, like Old Mans Gloom. Arriving at Grand Central station, the group stepped onto the tram and made sure they got out at the right square. Just a brief walk to Paradiso where some dude had to be talked to, in order to get in. It seemed that Paulus was on the guest list with two others, leaving two of the group without entrance. So two tickets had to be bought, and all five split the difference. There was no way Paulus could sweet talk some more folks on that guest list. Finally the problem was solved, two tickets and three on the list. Bertels, Dickies, Paulus, Marloes and Graig had fast food dinner on the other side of the road. Hawaii Burger for Coach! Hans came along and talked about the band he booked tonight in Paradiso; A Silver Mnt. Zion! Coach immediately asked about his connection with Efrim and the Swallow girl, can he book GYBE too? Well yes! Hans told that he had booked GYBE before in Rotterdam, the gig Coach Webber went to…. And even better, this year they come to mainland Europe and might, just might have a gig in Holland again! That would be darn swell! Hans said that he’ll try very hard ;-) A quarter to seven, time to get inside and get wild on Canadian folk Rock. The small room was already crowded and Dickies got us beer. The band comes on stage, great atmosphere already. A Silver Mt. Zion starts playing the greatest songs in a fantastic way and everybody is just blown away by the power of this group! Efrim on electric guitars, Swallow girl and Sophie on violins, a classic bass player and the drummer did the best set list (Thanks Tinnec) ever and the audience was silent as a mouse. All fans! Coach really enjoyed the show, and even tweeted: Real good show, ROCKSOLID! Time stood still and the world stopped turning during these heavenly moments. Afterwards, Bertels persuaded the 071 entourage to stay longer to see the next band also, since Paulus had two names on the guest list for the other gig too. Well OK, let’s have some beers… Paulus told Coach about the history of Music for the Defect and why they quit, how tyeh went on doing solo projects and how they were the best in the scene without being picked up. Garry came by several times, the dude who booked the next band, and told his story to nobody in particular. The second band of the evening plays very different music, it sounds like The Nits in their early days, but more melodic. The crowd is different, less relaxed and less silent. No problem for the music. Field Music did a great show with solid songs, good instrumental schedules and lots of fun. After several songs, the Sub entourage splits, they want to remember the extreme good Zion gig. Bertels however stayed for the sake of checking out this band, their way of play, their relation to older material like The Nits and naturally this review! Coach Bertels is your reporter on the ground ;-) And Bertels liked it very much! Songs sang by the white haired piano playing dude sound different than the songs sang by the dark haired guitar playing dude. Just like Henk Hofstede and Michiel Peters, they got fighting and Michiel left The Nits. Two Captains on a boat don’t work. Welll lets just see what happens with this young band. After the show, Coach bought a CD and headed for the FEBO to get some solid content in that pool of beer. It was a great evening with the ROCKSOLID Zion concert and a very good Field Music show!
